Surprised to see there's no thread yet on the Lou Reed and Metallica collaboration Lulu. Anyone listened yet? I've been playing it a bit over the last week and after initail reservations I've got to admit it's very good. Better in fact and certainly more groundbreaking than anything Metallica have done in the last 20 years. It's recognisably Metallica and yet it's not. They've come up with some of their best riffs in a long time yet it's simpler (genereally speaking), incredibly heavy riffs often accompanied by a drone (which works really well) with Reed's often almost spoken delivery over the top.

It shouldn't work but it really does.

I was going to review it and noticed it's not listed under Metallica yet. Don't want to tread on any team toes so I've not added it myself as I wanted to enquire whether this is considered more a Lou Reed album and therefore not valid for PA? My own thoughts is that it's equally a Metallica release and should be on here. Any thoughts?

For me, that album is a Lou Reed album, with Metallica acting as a support band.

Lulu can be streamed here: http://www.loureedmetallica.com/listen-to-lulu.php

EDIT: And you can review it now! See: http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=35265

I know what you're saying, being a pretty big Reed fan and somewhat of a Metallica fan, I found the album an interesting collaboration and an ambitious shot at something new. Sure it falters at times but that's to be expected.

^ It's certainly going to be controversial. I'm sure many Reed fans will hate it as will many Metallica fans. You're right, it does falter at times - it's certainly not perfect, but I feel it's a worthwhile collaboration.

I´m really looking forward to this one. I love both artists, well maybe Lou a bit more. I just wish he´d sing more these days. He seems more into talking than vocal melodies these days. It´s not like he was a major rock n roll tenor back in the day though, - in fact I´d call him an anti-singer, but lately he seems to have ignored melody completely in his vocal lines - and focusses entirely on the words.
I´m still pretty psyched about this release thoughBig smile

And Paul, I feel much the same about those "worst of" threads. Feels like an open invitation to those that only feed off negativity and the sheer thrill of putting other people´s tastes downThumbs Down
All you need is love baby!!!

^ David, he doesn't do much singing on this one either and your observations on his vocals pretty much sum up Lulu. Nevertheless, enjoy!

^I wasn´t really expecting him to change courseLOL

I´m going to stream Lulu tonight, and as a warm up I´m listening to Rock n´ Roll Animal. Maybe the best live album ever!!! One of those desert island albums for sure.

I like it. Probably my favorite thing Metallica have been involved with - as for Lou Reed, I'd say this is on par with "The Raven". I find it a bit long (plus it has a couple of stinkers - like The View and Iced Honey), but I understand there is a story to be told, etc. Also, James Hetfield "singing" is quite unnecessary. The second disc is my favorite.

I thought the first track was unbearable towards the end so it wasn't really a good opener but it definitely goes nowhere but up from there. Disc two is amazing.

I've streamed the album now, against my better judgment, and after the first listen I'm really not digging it at all. I've never really given Lou Reed's stuff much of a chance other than Walk on the Wild Side because his style has never appealed to me.
The whole spoken word thing has never been my type of thing; it's why "Be" is probably my least favorite PoS album. I'd far prefer Gildenlowe's spoken word stuff over Lou Reed's, though. He's off key at times, his voice drones, sounds like an old man chortling along, etc. And while I obviously have nothing against old men, I don't want to listen to them ramble on in my free time in an attempt to have enjoyment.

If I want to listen to listen to spoken word, I'd rather listen to something like this:

If I want to listen to Metallica, I'd rather listen to something like this:

Personally I don't want those two mixed in the way it was mixed. I commend Metallica on trying something out there and different, and others are free to enjoy it without me looking down on them, but I doubt I'm ever going to quite enjoy it. I'll give it at least 4 or 5 more listens before I write it off for a while.

What sucks most about this is how it'll make all those damn Metallica fans misjudge Lou. I think this whole shenanigan was just his 2011 take on Metal Machine Music. Folks who love Metallica, yet haven't heard of Lou Reed will figure all the guy's material is like that and blow off truly great records like Transformer, Berlin, The Blue Mask, Magic and Loss, or hell - even some VU - all of which trumps Metallica for my heart (in a minor way, I suppose, but still).

I hated all of Lulu. I don't blame Lou - he's a bedraggled fop these days. I don't blame Metallica either. Lars "Suck-a-dick-for-cash" Ulrich would've done anything for some more infamy-quenching limelight. If Metallica ever thought they were pushing the boundaries of rebellion, obviously they ignored Lou's little 1975 'treat'. Naw, Mr. Reed's not even one of my top 10 favorite artists, but he's up there. (23rd or so).

I got 20 seconds into the song. This is literally the worst bit of music I have heard all year.

So, EVERYONE rated (hated?) the album with a 1 star? There's something wrong here...
