Topic: I'm really sick of "best musician" polls.... Posted: July 14 2008 at 08:55 |
... because whenever you see such a poll you can be certain there never
is a German musician listed in it. Are there really no excellent German
musicians? Of course not! I could name several in every category, for
example drums: Mani Neumeier, Freddy Setz, Curt Cress, Jan Fride. Or guitar:
Roland Schaeffer, Roman Bunka, Dieter Bornschlegel. Or bass: Helmut
Hattler, Peter Kühmstedt, Matz Steinke. Or keyboards: Jürgen Dollase,
Ingo Bischof, Michael Wehmeyer. Or... I'll stop here. The same is true
for France, although to a slightly lesser degree; at least some French
musicians are named occasionally (most notably Christian Vander).
So please, guys and girls, if you make a poll for "best musician" and
only know musicians from the USA or the UK then make your poll "Best
.... (fill in any instrumental category) of UK and USA". Or go and make
yourselves more knowledgable.

I have to agree - prog polls tend to be very shallow or conservative in their picks, although there are exceptional posters of them...
A lot of what I listen to nowadays comes from Japan, Germany or France so my pick between Hackett and Howe is typically "who cares"? ;P

Well I also listen to a lot of Japanese, French and Belgian music, so drummers such as Tatsuya Yoshida, Christian Vander and Daniel Denis make my lists. I think in many cases, people forget foreign musicians' names more and are too lazy to look them up. Friede, no Guy Evans, from Wales, in your signature then?

Yes, I could have named any other country. There are excellent musicians everywhere.

Then go ahead and make a poll of German best musicians!.
all joke aside I will have to agree. there are many many great musicians besides The States and and England.
For example
Lalo Huber – keyboards,
Luis Nakamura -drums
Carlos Lucena - guitars,
from the Band Nexus from Argertina are excellent musicians.
Kenichi Mitsuda / keyboards
Masayuki Muraishi / drums
Kenichi Oguchi / keyboards
Shunji Sægusa / bass
YoshihisaShimizu /guitar,keyboards
form the band Kenso from J apan all amaZING as well and alot more.

How about just not clicking on them? I mean, you guys have been here a long time...when you see a poll named "best drummer" or whatever, don't you know what to expect by now?

You beat me to it. Even better, how about YOU make a poll with musicians that are often more overlooked on it? Surely then there will be a poll that satisfies your needs. I'm sick of "people complaining about various things" threads. Just do something about it.

Personally i prefer the "your favourite musician" polls. It's extremely hard to judge the "best" as such, as different musicians are better at different things, e.g. you cannot compare Doyle Dykes to say Eric Clapton: both are astonishing guitarists, but i bet Doyle Dykes can do some things that Clapton can't do and vice versa. There isn't and never will be a "best" musician.
However, you can have your favourite musician as you may well prefer one style to another.

Precisely. Expanding on that, I have favourite albums but they are not necessarily 5/5 rated from me. I just like them. For instance, H to He Who Am the Only One is a 4/5 rated album (it's close to 4.5) yet even though an album like Godbluff is 5/5 (to me), I prefer H to He (meaning, I will likely play it more often).

They're not included because many of the people who make the polls simply haven't heard of them, and a poll with them would tend to be rather uninteresting because a majority of the community here probably hasn't heard of them.
There's no distribution requirement for a Best Musician poll.

Most of my favorite musicians are indeed from the US. So what? It's the biggest country of the world, from a rock music standpoint but from many others too. Why shouldn't this reflect in the top artist polls ... and does every person interested in music around the globe have to know Eugen Cicero? Well, pianists should at least have heard of him. Christian Vander? I would not know him if it wasn't for this website, and I don't think that's a bad thing either. Those musicians may be great, they may even be better than many of the more popular artists from the US or UK, but they're obscure ... it doesn't have anything to do with quality, but popularity. And "best artist" polls are - at least partially - about popularity too. They might be more appropiately called "favorite artists" though.

I almost find this hypocritical
You complain that there isnt enough attention towards musicians from different places, but the only modern band that you even listen to and actually praise it the red masque, while you completely disregard entire subgenre's of music just because they're modern. So now you know how I feel feel when I see another poll between Yes Genesis, ELP ect.
And if you want some good drumming from foreign places check out Toe, Japanese Math rock band all about the drums. Unless it's too modern.

No one's forcing you to view the results, so if you don't like it..why bother?

It's so easy to avoid those polls... just DO NOT CLICK on them....
And rejoice for your superior vast knowledge of bands from all over the world... most people here haven't heard those, so it would be quite stupid for them to create polls about artists they don't know about....
Remember, japanese prog or malaysian prog or namibian prog is not so easy to get... actually, sometimes even US or UK's prog is not so easy to find! (we're not talking pop music... you don't find it in every cd store) so MAYBE we can forgive all this people who don't know as much as you....
It's expensive, also. O, hell... let's make money so we can buy more prog from other countries so we can create new polls with more of a United Nations flavor to them....
So I think it's btter just to AVOID those polls.....
In the other hand, I'm really sick of people going into threads about genres they don;t like just to say how much they dislike double bass drumming or how inappropiate a genre's name is....
Tell me Baldfriede, can't I also be sick of that???

Not true. The Red Masque is simply the only modern band I like. That does not mean I haven't heard others.
