I'm also certain those who invest billions for the World Cup-rights has the tools they need to find out if (enough) people are watching or not.

Is that a conspiracy theory? Well they could spy on this forum, but they can't spy on my TV. Nobody who hasn't explicitly agreed on being measured will contribute to the measured viewing figures. Read a bit about audience measurement. It's all done on samples, and if you're not part of the sample, you can do what you want and nobody will know. (And also, nobody will know if you boycott.)
Haha. No. They already know enough to conclude that about 65% less germans give of take, watched this World Cup's opening match. Do you doubt that those who collect the data knows what they are doing? The trend is exactly the same where I live. In Europe at least tens of millions that usually watch the world cup, don't feel like this year. I'm not talking about whether anyone knows that YOU watch and I don't.

Canada's first goal ever! One minute in....WOW!

I never post anything anywhere without doing more than basic research, often in depth.

Fair enough. I trust you do understand that this observation is entirely determined from what a few thousand chosen and consenting households do. My point is not that they get it wrong, my point is that it doesn't matter what anyone does who doesn't belong to this group. Or let's say whether they watch or not. Of course don't buy stuff that is advertised around the WC or from official providers; for watching don't go to pubs who paid a licence to get you there etc. It's money and only money that counts. Up to now I always bought a special journal introducing all squads and giving some background info and discussion plus some fun stuff. I may have picked pubs and restaurants because they show WC football. Not this time.

Belgium before that game was apparently no. 2 in the world!? Very very underwhelming at this tournament. I don't see them beating Croatia, and they may well go out.

Spain are very strong. At the end I'm happy with a point against them. Thanks Costa Rica for giving Germany some hope!

Nobody in Belgium thought it was correct or even fair to be ranked N°2.

Very few people expected the Red Devils top go past the 1/8 of final, but now we're not even sure to get past the pool/group stages. We knew the defence was shaky (too old and not quick enough), but apparently up front is also a problem.

Obviously, most of the team leaders are over 30 and the coach does not trust enough the younger generation (they're not talented enough). KDB & Courtois are also not pulling thru.

Belgium looks very slow, lethargic and devoid of creativity. And that is even with KBD.. Courtois can only save them enough... I see Croatia beating Belgium and going through to the next round. Let's hope Belgium can surprise me!

What a game between Ghana and South Korea! Exciting end to end action.

Great game, South Korea coach completely lost it at the end, got a red card and likely to pick up more punishment.

Hi,

I want more HUGE UPSETS ... it makes the WC more fun, specially if you end up seeing a new winner, instead of the old guard ... it will take the shine and history out of Europe and Latin America ... and I think that is a great thing!

Brazil defending the goal well.  They've proven that they have a dominate bench.   Excited for when they confront the likes of Germany, France, and Spain.  Will Brazil rise to the occasion?

I do enjoy the upsets, I think you'll see 'some' surprise teams in the knockout stages and some old guard go home early, but,..... I do expect to see an all old guard semi-final line-up.

Speaking of politics, it is hard not to avoid the questions surrounding the most politically charged match of the entire World Cup... The US media has been blasting all of these articles... I hope the USMNT doesn't choke tomorrow....

A deserved win by the USA. Congrats! Iran were quite... ungainly. With such a play, the Netherlands would easily surpass them in the Round of 16 match. The Americans have a chance agains the Dutch, IMO.

By the bye, was the position through the end of the first half really an offside? I have no knowledge on how that semi-automated offside technology is utilised, but my eyes saw it differently. I thought that a fair goal of the USA was not given. What say you to that?

My eyes would've agreed with yours but on Italian TV they showed some tech pics that made him look 1cm or so offside.

In fact I was happy it didn't count as it made the further proceedings more exciting. Both teams gave it all which is nice, though in the process they also demonstrated somewhat limited capabilities. Ultimately the US deserved it for all the energy they put in all the time, but they don't seem to have that much more on offer than running, running, running, being everywhere. Enough against Iran though.

He was offside.

Relatively easy win for England with 2 good goals killing off the game and the Welsh offering little.

Glad to avoid the Dutch in the next round.
