Anyone remember Dick Clark's Bandstand? I used to find it hilarious when after playing some new single he'd ask some of the dancers to rate the song: " I give it a 5 for the beat, Dick". Wonder what they'd make of some of the songs listed here.

May favorite odd meter songs are ones that the measure lines just start to dissolve. "Mother" is like that. It's not necessarily structured, intentional odd time, more of a free time (not free tempo) feel. The beginning of "Firth of Fifth" is the one I quote. No one in their right mind thinks of that in terms of its time signature, more the feel of the groups of 2s 3s and 4s. |

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

It is from the movie "Dein Kopf ist ein schlafendes Auto" (literally "Your head is a sleeping car" after a line from one of the songs of the band: "head a parked car, sleep in the seat". the band is the band of guitar and oud player Roman Bunka of Embryo, with Gerald Luciano Hartwig on bass guitar and sitar and the late Freddy Setz on drums, percussion and keyboards. this is the line-up of the first solo album of Roman Bunka, which is excellent. that song appears on the album too. and yes, I give up counting after a while too Edited by BaldJean - January 06 2012 at 12:01 |

Forget odd meters, how about mixed tempos & meters at the same time? This is something I do in my music all the time - I came upon it organically, but it was popularized - and rediscovered in the 20th century by composer Elliot Carter. Called metric modulation
Only example I've heard in top 40 music in last 15 years: Soundgarden's Pretty Noose - at around 1:05 |

This one may just take the cake as far as odd time signatures go. Also, even though it's not really prog, nearly every song on Soundgarden's Superunknown contains either 6/4, 7/4, or 10/4, and it was a rather large mainstream success.
