When Nevermind came out in 1991 I was listening to Adrian Belew,  Robert Fripp & The League of Crafty Guitarists, XTC, Harold Budd, Sarah McLachlan, Phil Manzanera, Dave Stewart/Barbara Gaskin, Steve Howe, Yes (Yes, Union, yes), Darryl Way, Andy Summers, Pere Ubu...

Very OT in this context, but we recently acquired Manzanera's Southern Cross album for 4 bucks), and I think you really nailed its review. The album may not be the epitome of prog, but it's certainly a very pleasant listen.

^ Very kind.  I do have to say at this point that I hold Nevermind in higher regard than Southern Cross, but at the same time, I hold most of Phil's other solo albums in higher regard than all of Nirvana's.

Plug for Phil, anything you buy from his internet shop comes personally autographed. Big smile

I don't like Nirvana at all, however I kind of  like Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains  and Soundgarden.

Yes, it is a great album, a classic in their genre, and that's a merit! Thumbs Up
And actually I think Nevermind has one of the best productions I've ever heard.

And you have to admit Kurt did a great job of singing with marbles in his mouth.

It's a classic and easily the most influential album from the 90's,die-hard prog fans like it or not.

I do. Their first two albums are brilliant and the latest one very fine too. Some good and some less good material in between.

I like it but I don't think Kurt Cobain is as good as the media would make you believe he is. I think the tribute to him turned him into an idol.. Like Heath Ledger.

I'm no Cobain fan, and I think he is a bit overrated, thoug he's not a bad musician at all. I think what happened with Kurt, Heath, and many more people is that they died YOUNG, and possibly that put them in a 'myth' status. Honestly, suppose Cobain was still alive these days, wouldn't he be almost 'just another musician' in this mainstream-driven music world? To some extent, yes, with the adittion that he released one of the most influential albums from the 90s. In other words, he would still be quite important, but not as he's now.

wow, I had no idea so many had such a bad opinion about this album. I found this album in tape form hidden in the woods of my elementary school when I was 10 and didn't like it when I heard it... however many listens later by the time I was 15... (10 years ago)  I couldn't imagine my progression into music without it.

No sir, I don't like it. Thumbs Down

I never got the Nirvana/Cobain thing (or grunge in general, for that matter). It just sounds like anger, pain anxiety and dysfunction set to a (plodding) beat, to me. I can't relate, nor do I want to. Give me some of the good ol' rock and roll, or up-beat & cheery new wave which preceded Nevermind and its angsty ilk.

It was an important album, you say? Fine -- I won't dispute that -- but it does nothing for me. Frankly, I find Nirvana to be grating and a decided DOWNER. Unhappy

I agree Peter.  When I was young we'd drive around with the windows down and say "f**k the World!".  The Cobain generation rolled up the windows and whined "The world f**ked me."  LOL

Ah, when I was old, which I was at the time and even moreso am now, I'd throw on a little Nevermind and be reminded of what rock could be.

In the early 90's i was working in a large department store in central London, and would often go down to the basement to see in stock deliveries, the guys who ran this department were a fairly grungy crowd (obviously kept well away from the smart suited types on the sales floor) and i would often chat to them about many things including music, as they had a huge ghetto blaster always on. One day the music was louder than ever.....they had a tape of "Nevermind" playing, and the strains of "Teen Spirit" at full volly sounded pretty uplifting for an ageing jaded rocker. I bought the album and have loved it ever since, though i only recently discovered "Teen Spirit" was a girls' deodorant...Ermm
