I can't think of any particular order but it would be something like this:
- Daniel Denis
- John Bonham
- Tony Williams
- Phil Collins
- Guigou Chenevier
- Christian Vander
- Robert Wyatt
- Martin Lopez
- Tatsuya Yoshida
- Aynslay Dunbar (played with Zappa in Wazoo, Apostrophe, Waka)
My list is the best

Apparently.
LOL, just given ya grief.

He(Ringo) may be a lousy and weak drummer, but his style may appeal to some.
I, personally, find the drum work on The End to be one of my all-time favorites, and it's so damn simple. |
Haha, no offense taken, Moe I love the Beatles drum sound, as on Hey Jude, Revolution, Here Comes The Sun...Some say it's often Paul McCartney who drums on Beatles music when you think Ringo is drumming (I read in a biography that Paul was praising Ringo in the press, and in the same time in the studio sometimes went behind the drumkit himself and ameliorated Ringo's drum parts. And besides... maybe it's more that producer George Martin gives the unique drum sound to the Beatles. But whoever it is... The Beatles' drumming was never flashy and there were never drum solos, but I love the simple but effective slightly pulsating drum sounds as used on the later albums.

John Marshall (Nucleus/Soft Machine)
Ian Paice (Deep Purple)
Martin Deller (FM)
Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine/Matching Mole)
Chris Maitland (Porcupine Tree)
Gary McCracken (Max Webster)
Bill Bruford (Yes/King Crimson)
Trilok Gurtu (World/ Rypdal &Vitous)
Elvin Jones (Coltrane, etc.)
Neil Peart (Rush)
...not in that order specifically. I just notice them more in the various recordings from their respective bands.

I should also add Curt Cress and Simon Phillips. (when you exclude Elvin Jones and Trilok Gurtu from my list...since they are Jazz/World and not "prog.").

A couple of little known facts:
Aynsley Dunbar toured with Journey, and more recently was part of the Pat Travers Power Trio along with bass player Gunter Nehzoda. I had the opportunity to record in the same studio with the PT Power Trio a couple years back and got to watch them record a few songs. Aynsley Dunbar is a real good guy and I'm glad someone mentioned him here.

Great drummer, notably on Waka/Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo.

Trilok Gurtu played with Embryo, so he could be considered to be prog. He also has a jazz-rock formation of his own.

I should have included Eduard Schicke from Schicke Führs Fröhling. He's a magnificent drummer as well.
