Subject: Top ten drummers

Who are your top ten favorite drummers of all time? They don't have to be prog, they can be from any genre. The top part of my list always changes, but at the moment mine looks like this
1. Neil Pert 2. Mike Portnoy 3. Kieth moon 4. Nicko McBrain 5. Brian Downey 6. Bill Brufrod 7. Phil Collins 8. Brann Dailor 9. Roger Taylor 10. Clive Bunker
Ringo Starr always falls in and out of my list, i think he is great and really under-rated but the others over all stand out more to me. I'd like to know if anyone knows what band number five played in, he is a very talented and under-rated drummer in my mind.

1. Perre Moerlen (Gong, Tribute, Mike Oldfield, Brand X) 2. Christian Vander (Magma, Offering, the jazz trios and quartets named after him) 3. Mani Neumeier /Guru Guru, Tiere der Nacht, Acid Mothers Guru Guru, Lover 303, lots of other projects) 4..Pip Pyle (Hatfield and the North, National Health, Soft Heap, many other projects) 5. Christian Burchard (Embryo) 6. Jon Hiseman (Colosseum, United Jazz and Rock Ensemble, Paraphernalia) 7. Bill Bruford (Yes, King Crimsion, UK, Earthworks, Bruford, many other projects) 8. Jan Fride (Kraan) 9. Andy McCulloch (King Crimson, Greenslade) 10. Jaki Liebezeit (Can, Phantom Band)
The first three are more or less fixed; the rest may change. Billy Cobham is no doubt an excellent drummer, but I don't like his style, so he does not appear on my list. The same is true for Lenny White.

I haven't heard much from Tony, but from Lenny I can only repeat what Friede said about him, he's techincally great but his style(and sound, always found his drum sound insipid) never did much for me.

I deliberately left out jazzz drummers in my list, else they would have crowded it. Vander and Neumeier have a lot of jazz experience. Vander has his own jazz trio and quartet, Neumeier began his career as drummer in the Irene Schweizer trio. Burchard certainly knows how to play jazz too, as you can see in video clips of Embro. There is a very good one with Roman Bunka on guitar, Dave King on bass and Christian Burchard on drums. All three are horribly underrated musicians here (or probably just too little known); they never appear in any polls about their instruments though they definitely should. Just watch this clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpjckchi7Kw - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpjckchi7Kw

Haha, no offense taken, Moe
I love the Beatles drum sound, as on Hey Jude, Revolution, Here Comes The Sun...
Some say it's often Paul McCartney who drums on Beatles music when you think Ringo is drumming (I read in a biography that Paul was praising Ringo in the press, and in the same time in the studio sometimes went behind the drumkit himself and ameliorated Ringo's drum parts. And besides... maybe it's more that producer George Martin gives the unique drum sound to the Beatles.
But whoever it is... The Beatles' drumming was never flashy and there were never drum solos, but I love the simple but effective slightly pulsating drum sounds as used on the later albums.

Aynsley Dunbar toured with Journey, and more recently was part of the Pat Travers Power Trio along with bass player Gunter Nehzoda. I had the opportunity to record in the same studio with the PT Power Trio a couple years back and got to watch them record a few songs. Aynsley Dunbar is a real good guy and I'm glad someone mentioned him here.

I should have included Eduard Schicke from Schicke Führs Fröhling. He's a magnificent drummer as well.

There have been other references on the forum that Peter Giger is not in a prog category, but i would like to note for readers that he was the brilliant drum force behind Dzyan-a band listed in PA-for people who really love great drummers, man, you have to hear him! Astounding, and nothing less!

Steve Negus The greatest drummer I know in the sense of how he have contributed to the music (of Saga) Simon Phillips The drummer that have influenced me the most Mel Gaynor Budgie Jeff Porcaro Christian Vander Daniel Denis Morgan Ågren great Swede Audun Kleive great Norweigan Tony Williams Though Im a big Genesis fan, I'm not adding Phil Collins, I think he is too uneven. Has played fantastic at times, at other times he does a little too much (especially fills). But The Cinema Show for example...unbelievable.

These are the guys who have made me "who I am" as a drummer. As always there is not enough room for all the people I like ,but these are the ones who fill in the question "What Would _________ Do?" when I am playing.
Gene Krupa
1. Niel Peart
2. Phil Ehart
3. Clive Burr/Nicko McBrain
4. Stewart Copland
5. Joe Morello
6. Mark Zonder
7. Tim "Herb" Alexander
8. Stanton Moore
9. Jeff Hamilton
10. Gene Hogland
11. Charlie Benante
12. Dino Campanella
13. Omar Hakim
14. Manu Katche
15. Bill Ward
16. Chad Smith
17. Mike Bourdin
18. Brendan Canty
19. DAve Lombardo
20. Will Calhoun
I am probably the only drummer in the world who is not enamorite of Bonham and Ringo. Both of those guys sort of bore me. Zepplin was good ,but there were many other guys doing what Bonham was doing and more at the same time...he just happened to get the spotlight, or be involved in the off stage shennanigans that truly brought Zepplin their fame.
