The BEST cover version of any song ever!!  The rest of the album is equally great.

Living proof of my new motto; "Fire the band and hire a professional."

It's true, it's the only cover I can think of that's better than the original.

Good Lord, grunge meets the Rat Pack LOL

I'm feeling lazy right now or I'd try to find one of Pat Boone doing Enter Sandman.

The Pat Boone album is called In A Metal Mood and its nowhere near as classy as the paul Anka.  Boone covers Enter Sandman, You've Got Another Thing Coming and Holy Diver among others, but the arrangements are pretty boring.  Just a lot of brass playing straight transcriptions of the guitar parts.  Nothing like what Paul Anka did on Rock Swings.  A good arranger is worth his weight in gold.

Wouldn't expect the Boone to be as classy as Anka.  Boone has been destroying classics (Tutti Frutti, anyone) since day one.

I've only listened to Nevermind once, some 15 years ago and thought it was ok, but never attempted a second listen.

While there are some gems from the grunge scene (Alice In Chains' Sap, Jar of Flies, & Dirt, Soundgarden's Louder then Love & Ultramega OK, Melvins' Lysol), Nevermind, IMO, wasn't one of them. The proto-grunge scene was much cooler with bands like Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., & The Pixies...

I'm a bit surprised that you like Pixies but not Nirvana, since Nirvana were basically an updated version of that band.  IMO both are great (and I'll gladly give the edge to Pixies), but Nirvana are definitely a worthy successor.

In other news, anyone who likes Nevermind but hasn't heard the Pixies album Doolittle, try and hear it ASAP.  It's similar but even better.

I don't think Doolittle is similar to Nevermind! Unless I heard wrong.

The music is more sophisticated, happy-ish, and the vocals are miles apart.

I'll give that to Nirvana for In Utero, which I thought was more daring & experimental than Nevermind - but the Pixies had such a fun & creative edge to them...not to mention they charted the waters Nirvana was swimmin' in Tongue

Listen to the bassline on Debaser.

Listen to the bassline on Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Smells Like Teen Spirit is basically a really good Pixies song released under the Nirvana name.

I'm not familiar enough with In Utero yet to really know how it compares to Nevermind (though I do like it, I just need to hear it more).

Pixies are definitely better, no doubt in part because they came first.  I just think that Nirvana did an excellent job of navigating the waters Pixies charted (to carry on the metaphor).

Given how anti-complex and sophisticated grunge as a whole is, no doubt there was borrowing. Doesn't make the overall product the same.

Do...In Utero is much more raw & challenging.

I'm a late comer to Nirvana, and I come there first and foremost as a prog fan.  Haven't ever checked out the other compemporaries that have been mentioned.  Maybe one of these days.  Always open to persuasion though.

When Nevermind came out in 1991 I was listening to Adrian Belew,  Robert Fripp & The League of Crafty Guitarists, XTC, Harold Budd, Sarah McLachlan, Phil Manzanera, Dave Stewart/Barbara Gaskin, Steve Howe, Yes (Yes, Union, yes), Darryl Way, Andy Summers, Pere Ubu...
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...
