The best name -- Van der Graaf Generator (incidentally, also the favourite band).

The coolest -- Gnidrolog (especially for the Slavic ears...).

The worst -- there's always another step to (unattainable) perfection...

Hawkwind was originally Nik Turner's nickname, a vaguely onomatopoaeic reference to his flatulence!

It's still a great name, one of my favourites along with Van der Graaf Generator and Soft Machine.

Worst names include Gentle Giant and Gnidrolog.

I can understand that because, despite "sounding like a law firm," it has a nice sound to it.

I have three of their albums (on cassette). Their music isn't much more creative than their name...

no, No, NO! You're all wrong! The greatest band name ever is a group that's never been mentioned here.

Atomic Rooster.

Can't be beat. Period. Bar none. Forever. Until I think of something better.

My favorite name:
Strapping Young Lad (its just such a fun left turn from what they play)

My least favorite:

Actually the band's name was created because of the habit of one of the members (Nik Turner) of hawking (coughing) and passing wind. But if one doesn't know the story one can also interpret the name in a poetic way, as the wind that carries the hawk through the air, which is quite fitting for the band's music, because they certainly can sting with a hawk's beak and talons, but there is a lot of spacy wind in their music too.

There are some band names I am not quite sure about whether they are good or bad. Examples:
Hatfield and the North (certainly a unique idea to name yourself after a road sign).
Henry Cow. (Sounds not too bad in English, but then I always have to think that the German equivalent would be "Heinrich Kuh", and that simply makes me udder  ... pardon, shudder. Wink)
10cc. (Especially when you know what they are named after Confused)

Kind of makes me wonder why you ended up buying three of their albums, instead of stopping after just oneLOL

These aren't necessarily prog but...

Good - The Knack, Rolling Stones, Soundgarden, Genesis, Nirvana, Renaissance, Talking Heads

Bad - the Cars, Bread, The Young Rascals

So Bad It's Almost Good - The Flaming Groovies

Stupidest - T.B.A. - There was once band out of Toronto that picked this name and to their surprise, never developed much of a following.
Casting doubt on all I have to say...
