Best - easily "Birdsongs of the Mesozoic" - great name with some equally inventive album titles. It's such a pity I hate their music!
There are lots of silly band names - too many to narrow down.

Contrary to the topic creator, I think Yes is the ultimate bandname.
Other names I like (I'll keep it to Prog) are Taal, The Mars Volta, Van
der Graaf Generator and Magma. I've never been a big fan of the names
Gentle Giant (I love their music though) and The Flower Kings.

If Roine Stolt had been a native speaker of English, I'm sure he wouldn't have called his band 'The Flower Kings'. It sounds as if he's some sort of baker!

I was never particularly fond of the name 'Yes' either.
My favourite prog band name.. Hmm.. I'd say 'Queensrÿche'
Some other favourites: Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden and Iced Earth.

I've always liked the images "Dream Theater" conjurs.
Flower Kings would be an ok name for a folk prog band I think, but it doesn't suit the band as they are.

Favourites (best is too controversial a word)
Pain of Salvation Van der Graaf Generator Opeth String Cheese Incident Machine and the Synergetic Nuts Agallloch
Least favourite:
Yes Genesis Pure Reason Revolution Shampoo (a jazz rock fusion band from Belgium in the 1970s) Frost* Marillion Vortex (love the music, but the name lacks originality) The Gift (most bands with "The" in the title annoy me) The Music (not a prog band and not a very good band overall and a very pretentious crappy name to boot) Emerson, Lake and Palmer (most bands that use the band members' names as the titles)

don't mind the old grumps, i'll protect you because you have a beautiful avatar.
it seems many people around relate the names to the music, and don't judge in abstracto. for example, i think dream theater is a brilliant name (and brilliant metaphor) and qwaarn is just some kind of primitive quack. but then i may listen to those two bands (i haven't, yet) and then change my mind about the names. a sample of name i don't like: Ther Nice. it's just the perfect name for the band Dave Gahan plays in in the video for "It's No Good", if you know what i mean. still, maybe i'll listen to The Nice and then suddenly like their name. something more interesting in prog: sometimes the names for bands and especially for songs are chosen so ugly/ridiculous/ludicrous, by intention, that one cannot ignore them and gets stuck with them (in a good way). just think of Atomic Rooster - that's ridiculous, but am i glad they've picked it? or check the Brand X song names - "Why Should I Lend You Mine" or "Dance of the Illegal Aliens" - those are just instrumental...

Just in case this is a language problem:
Flower:
Flour:
I imagine their name indicates a retro/hippy sort of focus on love and beauty. It's a very 60s/70s sort of name for a prog band. With their derivitive, retro sound, I think the name works.
But tell me please, folks: why is "Opeth" a good band name? (It sounds like a lisp, to me.)
Does it mean anything?

Googled it -- Wikipedia says this, of the name Opeth:
The name Opeth was taken from the novel Sunbird by author http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilbur_Smith - Wilbur Smith , and was originally spelled Opet. In the book, Opet is the name of the location for an ancient empire which translates to "City of the Moon".

Best- Mahavishnu Orchestra: This is probably the coolest name for a band that anyone has ever come up with in the history of all time. King Crimson is pretty cool as well, and Genesis isn't a bad name either.
Worst- Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer: I don't like the name Yes, it just doesn't sound that great, and it's really annoying trying to read a sentence with the word Yes in it, especially when somebody decides not to capitalize it. Maybe I should start a band with a single mundane word for a name. How about:
"The"
It would be nearly impossible to read a sentence with my band name in it.

Actually the band's name was created because of the habit of one of the members (Nik Turner) of hawking (coughing) and passing wind. But if one doesn't know the story one can also interpret the name in a poetic way, as the wind that carries the hawk through the air, which is quite fitting for the band's music, because they certainly can sting with a hawk's beak and talons, but there is a lot of spacy wind in their music too.
There are some band names I am not quite sure about whether they are good or bad. Examples: Hatfield and the North (certainly a unique idea to name yourself after a road sign). Henry Cow. (Sounds not too bad in English, but then I always have to think that the German equivalent would be "Heinrich Kuh", and that simply makes me udder ... pardon, shudder. ) 10cc. (Especially when you know what they are named after )

Hmm, I guess Van der Graaf Generator is a quite cool name, it somehow fits with their music. Despite being wrongly spelled.
I also like Meshuggah. Both the sound of the name(goes with chug, chug, chug, chug feel of many of their riffs) and the meaning(according to band biographies, it is the yiddish and hebrew word for "crazy") fit with their music.
Can't really think of any names I really dislike...

Here's Chris Cutler laying out the theory behind a terrific name (Art Bears):
I took the name from a sentence in Jane Harrison's Art And Ritual. "Even today, when individualism is rampant, art bears traces of its collective, social origin..." but not too much should be read into this; it just sounds intriguing, has an animal in it, plays with ambiguity and is mildly ridiculous. |
Of the ones that've already been mentioned, Jethro Tull, Samlas Mammas Manna, Mothers of Invention (can't decide if the original, uncensored 'The Mothers' is better)... King Crimson...
Not necessarily bad, but The Crazy World of Arthur Brown has a very perverse naivety to it. Furthermore, there's nothing like the loss of innocence experienced when you realise that, woah, 'Beatles' is actually a terrible pun!

Actually it's from the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band edit: I guess we're both right. The Beatles used the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band song in one of their movies.
And they changed. Radiohead is so much better than OAF.

GOOD NAMES:
1. King Crimson WOW! How can just a band name be so cool?! King Crimson, the name, is just pure awesomeness.
2. Manowar It REALLY fits the band, because the music is so "manly" and the lyrics often deal with war. It also sounds good, and it's long enough.
3. Iron Maiden I like those band names with two words. Especially when the other is "Iron". And hey, the name comes from an ancient torture device. Now, how cool is THAT?!
I also like the name "Dream Theater", even though I don't like the band at all. Other cool names: Motörhead (couldn't fit the music any better), Hawkwind, Megadeth, Black Sabbath (spooky!!), Genesis.
BAD NAMES: I don't like: 1. ridiculously long OR short names (unfortunately Van Der Graaf Generator is also too long) 2. names, which are very common words in English, such as Yes (The Who is pretty dull as well) 3. names that include any numbers, marks, signs, symbols or anything like that. 4. extremely unoriginal names like Emerson, Lake & Palmer etc. In other words, names including people's names. 5. names like "THE *******S". Or even worse, names like "*insert a name here* and the ************s." Bill Haley and The Comets for example. 5. simply stupid names. Need an example? THE FLOWER KINGS!

Alice in Chains is a winner.
And the worst band name goes to: Cock and Ball Torture. Google it. |
OK, be sure and but in "Cock and Ball Torture band" when you Google it, otherwise you'll get a bunch of pervy CBT sites and sites where you can buy devices for CBT.
A side recommendation for the adults on this site, the book Encyclopeida of Unusual Sexual Practices. Things that'll make you go "whaaaa?"

My ex used to go to CBT to help with her bipolar depression. She said it stood for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but now I'm not so sure...

Off the top of my head?
Favorites: Explosions in the Sky
Ozric Tentacles
Tangerine Dream
Least Favorites: Porcupine Tree
... Actually I think all band names are original, so I guess I don't really have any least favorites.

Haha. The only thing worse is 'Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe' and their eponymous debut album. Now that sounds like a law firm. |
Ha -- should have been titled " Dewey, Fleecem & Howe," eh Lycra? |
Dewey, Cheatem and Howe?
