But don't you realise that in spite of being camouflaged by politics, ethics, philosophies, great (and not so great) authors, at the bottom of it all everyone is being taken for one big ride?
It is my firm belief that after the fall of the Eastern Block some new enemy had to be created by any means possible, and the Muslims just got handed the ticket. Could have been anyone else: The southern half of the globe, the Eskimos, or the Austarlians. In this case the Muslims were just the unlucky ones.
Hence this burqa ban. Just try and see through the smokescreen. Religions are ideal targets, IT'S ALL PROPAGANDA! THE WAR MASCHINE MUST GO ON!
|
That's what Jean and I already pointed out. This is not about the burqa at all. It is playing on islamophobia. Sarcozy is a populist. His whole record shows he has never been one for civil liberties, and now he suddenly wants to liberate the poor Islamic women? Nonsense. He is just distracting from the other problems he has.
|
Hear! Hear!
100% correct. The burqa may or may not be a symbol of oppression but a free person, in this case a woman, should not be told by the State what they can and cannot wear. It's a canard of the highest order and Sarcozy should be ashamed of himself.
|
I'm a little surprized by your stance, here.
It's not just a question of clothing Tony!! It's that these women cannot walk out odf their homes alone. They must accompanied by a pêrson of the same sex or a member of the close family.
In France this young woman (29 years old, I think) was driving a car wearing that stuff (immediate retrieval of the driving license was the consequence).... pretending she's done it for 9 years(lying, really, because it was proven different) ...... She's claiming complete irresponsability, because of the religion that was enforced on her.
not only could she not see a damn thing (or too few to be drive safely), but her movements are competely awkward (the width of the burqa) and make it impossible for safe car driving.
BTW, it is only younger women that wear these things in our western countries, coz their mothers and grandmothers wouldn't be caught dead in that thing >>> most of them moderate muslims mothers don't understand their daughters and most fathers are despaired at seeing this as well. .

A religion that treats half of the population as second-class beings is the problem. Really, the burqa is but a symptom. I think, after all, it doesn't solve anything, just will exacerbate tensions. It would be great if one could ban the entire muslim faith entire but alas, it can't be done. I guess it's better if we learnt to tolerate them, though they tolerating us is just as difficult.

Oh yeah telling people what they're allowed to believe, that's definitely much better. Isn't that the same thing theocracies use for oppression

Yes, just think about it: MacDonalds, Jonas Brothers, George Bush, Michael Bay, American Football. Isn't THAT hard to tolerate?

The same Michael Bay you talk about will one day make an atrocious movie when muslims and westerners kill each other and the world explodes, with a scene depicting an entire football stadium being engulfed in flames, while Bush and the Sheik of Saudi Arabia share a hamburguer in a bunker; but, it is Bay, so in the end the Jonas Brothers will sacrifice themselves to save the planet, allowing to be gang raped by a furious crowd of both muslims and westerners, who will finally realize they can share the same planet if they learn to fight a common enemy.

The problem is, that it's not that hard to happen...

Someone said that the Muslims tolerating us is just as difficult. Please take a trip to an Arabic country, where you will learn they they do not. They don't even pretend to. Christian churches and services are actually illegal for a start off.

Muslims are welcome to visit St. Peter's basilica if they want.
You go and try to visit Mecca and see what happens.

Yes, the Mecca, of course. But we are talking countries forbidding Christian churches and services. I guess Saudi Arabia must be one of these states.

I have always wondered what it would be like to experience the Hajj. Just for the sake of you know, expanding my world view/knowledge, experiencing different cultures. I guess I'd have to convert to Islam OR try and sneak in...and I know Saudi Arabia has some strict punishment laws

I know of a Jewish guy who experienced Hajj undercover. He said it was really quite mundane. Lots and lots of praying basically.
And in response to CPicard's question, all of them basically, though some like Oman can be a little more liberal.
