Personally i prefer the "your favourite musician" polls. It's extremely hard to judge the "best" as such, as different musicians are better at different things, e.g. you cannot compare Doyle Dykes to say Eric Clapton: both are astonishing guitarists, but i bet Doyle Dykes can do some things that Clapton can't do and vice versa. There isn't and never will be a "best" musician.

However, you can have your favourite musician as you may well prefer one style to another.

Untrue.  There is John Zorn. Wink

You mean Frank Zappa? Wink

While it doesn't actually constitute proof, I will point out that no one has a more impressive allmusicguide page than John Zorn.  Just look at it; it's unreal.

I could name several in every category, for example drums: Mani Neumeier, Freddy Setz, Curt Cress, Jan Fride. Or guitar: Roland Schaeffer, Roman Bunka, Dieter Bornschlegel. Or bass: Helmut Hattler, Peter Kühmstedt, Matz Steinke. Or keyboards: Jürgen Dollase, Ingo Bischof, Michael Wehmeyer. Or... I'll stop here. The same is true for France, although to a slightly lesser degree; at least some French musicians are named occasionally (most notably Christian Vander).
So please, guys and girls, if you make a poll for "best musician" and only know musicians from the USA or the UK then make your poll "Best .... (fill in any instrumental category) of UK and USA". Or go and make yourselves more knowledgable.

You complain that there isnt enough attention towards musicians from different places, but the only modern band that you even listen to and actually praise it the red masque, while you completely disregard entire subgenre's of music just because they're modern. So now you know how I feel feel when I see another poll between Yes Genesis, ELP ect.

And if you want some good drumming from foreign places check out Toe, Japanese Math rock band all about the drums. Unless it's too modern.

Not true. The Red Masque is simply the only modern band I like. That does not mean I haven't heard others.

If you only like one modern band, than all I can tell you is that you didnt look hard enough, if you even looked at all.

Haha, I know, Zorn is awesome. I've only unfortunately heard samples though, I'm working on getting into his vast discography of awesome-soundingness. Tongue

I once justifiably earned a reputation for trouble when I constantly attacked Best of polls for being incorrect . My point being that they should be "My favourite" so as to avoid the stain of objectivity. Pedantic, yes. But then I thought, who cares. It's like arguing as to who the 14th most powerful drummer in the world is, or fighting over whether to use G or G7 in a song (True story - it seems that Howe & Anderson actually had this arguement during Tales).

I'd rather stay away from these 'who's better, who's best' polls.  It's like arguing who makes a better peanut butter and jelly sandwich...my mom or yours?  It doesn't matter!  Just eat your sandwich and be thankful you have it!  The same with 'who's fastest?' or 'who's slowest?' or 'which band has gone the longest without having a bath?'  I don't really know nor do I wish to know!  It gets up my nose!

For me, if you know what I like, then I prefer to have suggestions...like a buffet.  You like this?  How 'bout try some of that.  If you like it, and I don't prefer it, then that's ok!

Now, where's my peanut butter.....Wink

with all respect: you are not the guardian of my taste. modern bands are too controlled. I tried Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and they had a certain appeal, but there were a few things I disliked too. nevertheless, they are certainly better than most modern bands.
there are some new bands I love, but they are not in the archives and probably don't belong either (although there are strong prog relations), like Hadouk from France or the international trio Orientacion. of what is in the archives: I have listend to a lot of new stuff and was almost always disappointed
