Really? I don't believe it's out of print. New copies are selling in the $10-15 range. |

Finally returned to my thread on proto prog to see someone gave some love to Procol.
That's my favorite LP by them.

The criteria on this website for proto prog seems to be 1966-1968/69. However, on other sites I have seen it refer to mostly English bands but from 68/69 to 71/72 and including bands like Gracious, Jonesy, Catapilla, Beggar's Opera, Cressida, Skin Alley, Gravy Train, Rare Bird, Raw Material, Indian Summer, Fantasy, Spring, Gnidrolog, Cirkus etc etc. I suppose you could include the Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Family and others but usually I've heard it referred to lesser known bands.

We extend the date past 1969 and into the early 70s simply because Prog did not happen at the same time everywhere and some proto-bands were still being influential on Prog bands after some imaginary cut-off date. This isn't an exact science and we use judgement and knowledge to decide whether a band needs to be included into our select sample of proto-Prog bands.

That's good and that makes sense. Prog certainly wasn't something that happened over night imo. Some say that anything after KC's first is real prog but ultimately it would depend on the sound. I'm sure not every band heard that album as soon as it was released anyway and many bands including YES and Genesis among others were still developing their sound. |

Magical Mystery Tour and Sgt. Peppers would be my top two but one I really enjoy that I don't think has been mentioned is Andromeda's debut. They were a power trio with some mind bending guitar.

Kiselina (transl. "Acid") by Belgrade's band Pop Mašina (transl. "Pop Machine") is nicely proto-prog sounds album (1973).

Thanks for keeping the thread going.....
They are listed as 'proto-prog' on their PA page , but I have always thought of them more as a hard rock band with the occasional prog element.
But I would have picked In Rock as their best 'proto-prog ' album.
