Humiliation for Brazil as they lose to Cameroon!!!! I did not predict such a result today... What a World Cup it has been!

It shows that playing at 80% only because you're already through is not enough to beat most teams in this WC. Respect to Cameroon, Tunisia, South Korea, Japan for pulling these things off, but if we're honest, they had the easier job compared to the matches where both opponents needed something (to Japan's honor I will admit that Spain actually did need something, but no longer in the last 15 minutes or so when it became clear Costa Rica wouldn't win).

a few big upsets and surprises (who would've bet a single $£€ on the Wallabies or Morocco three weeks ago), but overal, I think the winter context in the middle of the National championships (in Europe anyways) played a major role OK 1/16th final NL - USA Arg - Aust Jap - Cro Braz - S Kor Fra - Pol Eng - Sen Mor - Spa Por - Swi .

Hi, I can't pick worth beans ... but here goes. NL-USA ... probably a crap shoot. with the one with the ball in the last minute pulling it out! The USA defense has been quite good with the exception of one penalty! Arg-Aust ... I'm thinking that Argentina is gonna run rampant here. Jap-Cro ... a heck of a game but Croatia might have issues with the Japan speed and relentless running. Braz-SKor ... I'm betting that Brazil will have issues with S Korea and their speed and smarts. Fra-Pol ... You think the blues will show up with their pacifiers or not? Eng-Sen ... I don't think England wants to play the spar game. either score fast and big, or they will go home! Mor-Spa ... I don't think Spain is expecting any African teams to beat them. Por-Swi ... I think that Portugal will end up going home, unless someone over there can score and they can withstand the onslaught at the end! I will only bet 3 cents on each game! And that's with myself only, not anyone else!

I'm thinking that the US has a very good chance against the Netherlands tomorrow. If Australia beats Argentina, that would be more shocking than the US beating the Netherlands.

I agree on six of these but think that Japan and Switzerland will make it through. The USA have a good chance but... just not.

I'm not picking any of these this WC has been way too unpredictable for that. Nice to see only half the field is European at this stage historically it's Europe plus Argentina, Mexico & Brazil.
Japan & S Korea have given Asia real credibility on this world stage plus two African nations. Really rather excellent. Belgium's golden generation is officially done, didn't do much better than England's when all is said and done. Germany's aura of invincibility has been well and truly trampled ("Football is a game where 22 people chase a ball for 90 minutes then Germany win" - Gary Lineker) The group stages have been fantastic entertainment.

I still think this WC is skewed because of the time of the year and the interrupted european championships. Some teams probably needed more preparation time (which other continents +/- had), but then again, it was the same case for all of the other European teams (look also at Demark's poor showing, not just Germany & Belgium) But then again I also suspect that the usual WC held in June advantaged Europe, since the Southern Hemisphere championships were probably interrupted for those tournament held during their winters' championships - that goes for those teams that do not have most of their players playing in Europe, of course.
Yup, that's the two games that had me really hesitating heavily, so I went with my "common sense", but no major conviction. Edited by Sean Trane - December 03 2022 at 02:16 |

Wonderful to see Hwang Hee Chan score for South Korea. He's had an absolute mare the least 12 months at Wolves so hopefully he can come back after the World cup and help us out of our crisis. Portugal put out a changed team as many did that were already qualified. They have a lot of depth but do rely heavily on their stars. Just how old is Pepe now?, 103 I make it lol. Then you have Thiago Silva not far behind for Brazil.
Good luck to USA later. I believe they can do it against a very mediocre Netherlands team. Argentina should progress , it would be the greatest shock of the world cup if they didn't , I'll keep an eye on that one just in case!

I've seen some making the case that the usual summer timing is bad particularly for England and Premiership players because they are then tired from the whole season with its overloaded calendar, and that these players should do better in Nov/Dec. Same could apply to other European leagues even though they don't play quite as much. Of course the evidence right now doesn't back this idea up, but at least England hasn't been doing too badly up to now.

well the other years, unlike most other European championships, the Premier (and maybe other UK leagues) don't stop at ball during the X-mas break. Most of the others have between 3 and 4 week breaks (from early/mid december until early mid-january). UK & Belgium will start just after X-mas and France & Spain before NY. Italy just after NY. This means that the rest of the players have had their break a bit earlier this year, and the WC final four players will have almost nothing.

Hi, I would think that it would be an advantage as the players are up to speed in terms of their abilities and play. The weird side is that it is being turned around that it is too many games, when in reality, they would be playing anyway ... seems strange to me!

Hi,
Oh well ... it had to end sooner or later ... I think the USA showed its inexperience against well founded European teams. Too little too late and not having Gio sooner showed a difference that was wasted it looks like. If the USA wants to get better and tougher they need to play more European teams, and then go after some of the stronger Latin American teams. Mexico is done and over with its stupid rules. Canada will only improve, as will the USA in Concacaf.

Nice comfortable win for England after a testing first 20 minutes. They'll have to play A LOT better against France who looked awesome.

I believe that'll be a great match, but it might be tough for the English to get a result.

I've got to say I was quite disappointed with Senegal after England had scored. You can't get away with that error rate at this level. The first goal and then the second shattered their confidence completely. England were quite clinical. France were shaky in the beginning as well, and later quite safe, as were England. I say their quarter final will be won by the team that is at 100% power from the very beginning and scores the first goal.

Hi, Not bad ... 2 and a half ... the half was for France as I did not trust them, but they showed up! The USA is/was a bad pick based on hope I would say ... but in the end, the USA was shown how unprepared and naïve they were even though it looked like they played better than the Netherlands ... but the USA showed their biggest issue of all ... not being able to finish things and not having a "striker" to play the position. I'm also worried that the USA did not use Gio more than they should ... in a game like that you needed the strength of players that are used to being around some of these folks, and in the end, it was like some of the USA players had no idea how smart and good some of those players were and some got caught badly, which caused scores. Nice to see England show up. And Argentina played well, specially that one guy ... he's goal is not something you or I would ever see or find! Let's see how the other half does, now. Not sure how/what to go with the rest of the way. I don't think Brazil can play with France if the team that shows up yesterday, is the one that shows up against Brazil. I don't think Argentina can either, although it's hard to measure as one minute later Messi finds a mouse hole and punishes that team ... and it ends up being massive, and a problem. Will see ... I think Brazil will have issues with their game today. They have to show the same spunk as France and England did ... or they won't last long!
