Boycott

I'll watch once the single-elimination starts. I know the US will go nowhere. I guess I prefer The Netherlands, which is like a second home outside the US, but mostly because they have never won.

About the first game:

The Qatar team looked way out of depth against a disciplined Ecuadorian side, but they still did not concede more than 2 goals. They will be not so lucky against Netherlands and Senegal.

As for tomorrow, looking forward to the US Wales match, but also the Senegal Netherlands match. (Sorry England fans, but your match is too early for me!)

Oh please.
Don't bring BDS in here.
If you don't want to support FIFA for corruption and choosing an antisemitic, homophobic, misogynistic country for hosting an international event that could put attendees lives or livelihood in danger, then don't. But the BDS ideology is regressive thinking and does nothing to fix the perceived problems you have with the country.

It's dangerous thinking and a slippery slope, I think. As a person of Jewish descent with major ties to Israel, I won't give the world cup a microsecond of attention (aside from forums like these) and if I were a soccer player (excuse my American terminology) on a team that made it to the world cup, I'd quit. Not putting my life in danger for this oppressive regime. There is a ton of Iranian influence in Qatar. Look up Kylie Moore-Gilbert and you'll see why I would object to going to an Iranian influenced country. Aside from that, due to Israel's assassination of a top Iranian politician this year (who was planning a terrorist attack on Israelis and Jews abroad), which also happened to be the man behind the terrorist attacks by the prisoners exchanged for Kylie Moore-Gilbert, the Iranian regime wants to avenge him by murdering innocent Jews and Israelis around the world. The Mossad and Turkish government quite literally had to protect an Israeli couple touring Istanbul earlier this year because some Iranians were planning on killing them in their hotel. Just regular Israeli citizens on vacation. Ever heard of the Black September massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics? Yeah not taking a chance in f**king Qatar.

But I digress.

"BDS," as you mentioned above, is actually an antisemitic ideology aimed at delegitimizing the state of Israel. They do sh*t like recruiting Roger Waters to harass Thom Yorke on Twitter because Radiohead wants to play a concert in the country that made them famous in the first place! They don't care about Palestinians or the fact that this movement actually HURTS the Palestinian cause due to the fact that many Palestinians work in Israel proper. Throwing around the movement like so as stated above is a very bad precedent.

It's the same reason I don't believe in boycotting the Russian people. Just because Putin is crazy warmonger doesn't mean the innocent civilians should have to suffer...

Well that was a lot to unravel I so say lmao

Ouf, that's quite a loaded statement. As long as Israel is not "legitimizing" (i.e. recognizing) Palestinian territories, BDS is a normal reaction towards an occupying/suffocating entity.

You can blame FIFA for derailing the thread, naturally lmao

idk if they're big bran or smol bran for this but it was certainly a decision on their end...

Fortunately for me I don't watch any sports. Not even America's past time, baseball. I'm more of a... well prog fan than a sports fan

I stated what I felt I needed to about this particular debacle. It's here. It'll show up on a web crawler search if the right keywords are used. Now I'm flying away, so you can discuss soccer. Zoom zoom!

Well Qatar looked well out of their depth in the first game, I'll have the England game on tomorrow while I'm working. Was looking forward the Netherlands - Senegal but they'll likely struggle without Mane. Wales - USA should be a good game.

Okay I'm flying back in for this:
Qatar won't allow any cooked Kosher food and public Jewish prayer
Now it's personal!

For the record, I don't follow J-Post - it's decent journalism but the website sucks - it just showed up on the front page of Reddit, where I went to look at the Pokémon sub for community reviews, but again I digress.

I mean how many religious Jews are actually going to Qatar fit this and which ones would actually be stupid enough to pray there? Image the f**king headlines if Israel hosted a World Cup and banned Muslim prayer! [btw they wouldn't] ffs this is repulsive - why would they want to make themselves look like this to the world? Get have a wonderful opportunity to trick the world into thinking they're not as bad as their rep makes them out to be but here they are just proving how bad they really are.

Also, what's the point of banning "cooked kosher food?" All kosher food literally BY DEFINITION is halal! This essentially just limits the halal options. I guess the whole point is to them the world they're antisemitic, it seems.

As I stated before, if I were a Jewish soccer player, I'd just quit. Flat out. Not worth being persecuted against, personally. I stand by that statement. Any Jews who are stupid enough to have entered Qatar should get out NOW before they end up like Kylie Moore-Gilbert, or worse, the Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics!

Shame on FIFA for straight up allowing this.

Alright flying away again. Zoom! Zoom!

Edit: 10,000 religious Jews from Israel. Despicable! How can that be? They were promised Kosher food and are now being denied it. This doesn't seem right. I'm going to continue to follow this story and make sure they're safe

England came all guns blazing. I managed to catch parts of it. The attack looks good, but I fear that careless goals will be allowed by that shaky defense. Either way, I expect England to be a tough task for the US on Friday.

The shaky defence is always England’s worst treat then and penalty shootout lol. Still a great result for us.

So far, so boring...

2 strifeless matches are over.

I hope that the game that is about to begin will be more fun.

Someone please explain how Maguire being wrestled to the ground with both arms is not a penalty but Stones having one arm across is.

The Netherlands and Senegal match was really good. Sucks for Senegal though. They played well, but still lost...

This is the fundamental problem with VAR, a lack of consistency.

Ugh, the US threw that game away. What terrible judgement by Zimmerman. Hats off to Wales to stay alive in the game and the tournament. I think No. 2 in this group will be decided by perhaps goal difference.

Yeah, US should have killed the game off in the first half. Let Wales off the hook. That's such a rookie bad foul for the penalty.

I agree.

The USA were the stronger and more effective team today/tonight, but Wales "know" to play football (you call it soccer). Haha. That penalty clearly displayed what the US lack in this sport. Anyway, countries like Japan and the USA have been gaining on the countries that have an older and deeper football culture and praxis. Let's see how the things will unfold...
