The Eloy vs Nektar poll earlier reminded me that I always wanted to hear something from Matziol's solo album. Now there's some stuff on youtube. I should warn you, this is really not bass oriented and you shouldn't have wrong expectations. Be open-minded to enjoy this stuff. Wink (I do promise that some of the stuff posted is seriously good, but, errr, probably not all of it.)

This is a single from the 80s. It's actually Neue Deutsche Welle (German new wave), so at least no German accents.
Lyrics are quite political. Peace & socialism! Big smile

Instrumental B-side. I like this, but really bass & complexity fans look elsewhere!

Another fairly easy listening instrumental:

The last one is the one I like most, and it's actually from 2021! Not from Matze's solo album, but apparently a guest appearance of Eloy members. Great to see Frank, Matze, and Hannes here.

Some will know the Ego on the Rocks - Acid in Wounderland album by Detlev Schmidtchen and Jurgen Rosenthal. Actually this is a very cool and fun album. It would've helped hiring a singer, but still I love this.

It seems Detlev Schmidtchen has done a good number of solo albums. Anyone who knows some of that stuff?

Ah here... can't exactly say I'm a fan of it, but anyway, I somehow enjoy digging for this kind of thing.

Full album on youtube... I need more time listening but actually this seems much more to my taste than his song above.

...and just to collect stuff here (no more time for listening right now but will certainly check it out, I was always curious to hear this), I can also now find the Eloy-album without Frank on youtube. Codename Wildgeese.

That 'Ego on the Rocks' lp is an all time favourite of mine! Very trippy and a bit bonkers but more down to earth and 'new wave' in sound.. Definitely an antidote to the slightly (?) more 'Astral' stuff Eloy had been producing at that point.

Great thread, Lewian. I know a lot of fans don't consider Codename: Wildgeese a "true" Eloy effort (the name was used without Frank's permission), but I like it. It's a good one for Tangerine Dream fans.

I quite liked Codename Wildgeese and the synth sounds of the Matziol tunes.  Not a fan of the neu deutsche well song.  Haven't listened to Detlev yet

Did you listen to the Syrinx Call? That's my favourite out of these. Codename Wildgeese is hit and miss for me. Detlev's album has some very nice bits, but I'd probably leave both of these at 3 stars (which of course means "good").

yes, Syrinx Call is really good, and apparently current.  Does that album have Eloy on other songs as well?  It starts a bit like Poseidon's Creation, but ends up much folkier.

I don't know more than can be read around the video I'm afraid.

Faust - The Rock Ballet. Not very good if you ask me...

I bought the album back then because it was Eloy related. They're all there except Frank Borneman: Hannes Arkona, Hannes Folberth, Klaus-Peter Matziol, Jim McGillivray (their early 80s line-up) with Jürgen Rosenthal for the libretto and lyrics. And Kalle Bösel added on vocals and keyboards (don't know who that is). I may have listened to this thing once and I'm a bit afraid to listen to it again...

^ No, this is not the band Faust. Faust - The Rockballett (sic) is the original title of this project, "performed by Shade" as the album says, but this was just a one off. See the discogs page.

Eloy may be influenced by bands such as Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. Still no one sounds like Eloy. Maybe a bit similar still Eloy are very unique. Really no one sounds “like” Eloy in my opinion. It’s not just the German accented narration. They are a band loved by many and I am one of the many. When I want to hear Eloy sounding music I take out Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes or Ocean and don’t really look for another band. I do like other space Prog rock bands. None of them sound like Eloy to me and this is one of the things that makes them so good.

Hi

I was thunking that the band JANE fit this area some ... in essence, I took to Jane before Eloy ...
Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Thanks Kees, nice find! I wasn't aware of this, and I'll listen to it later.

@Last posters: Note that this thread is *not* about music that "sounds like Eloy" (whatever that means) but about music with Eloy or ex-Eloy members involved. I realise that Jane fits the bill though as Manfred Wieczorke played for both Jane and Eloy. (Personally I'm not a big fan of Jane, but they have their moments.)
