Interesting to see all those lists. I'm quite incapable to produce one... Apparently there's not really a Big Six, but a Big One: Riverside. They got the most mentions - most of the lists are very different from each other...

I can't think of 6 within the parameters of the edited OP. So I'm just going to nominate The Neal Morse Band, they adopted that name in the 21st century although Neal was releasing albums before 2000. As The Neal Morse Band they have released 4 excellent albums.

Currently the top four of the 21st century are... Riverside, Haken, Wobbler and Leprous.
Prog-metal is dominating. Not surprising, as prog has changed. What will prog sound like in 50 more years?

Now, you make me confused. Are we talking about our own personal preferences, or what generally can be considered as the most popular/"big" bands?

quality over quantity, and all kind of PopcoRn almost beyond

At first, I thought this would be easy. Then I looked at my collection and so many bands/artists were available... and all very good:
* first album released in 2000, does it count? It's almost impossible for me to choose the 6 best elements. But let's say Bent Knee, Emmett Elvin, Estradasphere, Haken, Jack O' the Clock, Karmakanic, Major Parkinson, The Tangent, Tirill, Wobbler as top 10. Then at gunpoint I would say Bent Knee, Haken, Major Parkinson, The Tangent, Tirill, Wobbler for a top 6.

I don’t want to make an individual list since that would just be another topic with «Your top six in the 21st century». The point with the big six is that they were big and reached a wide audience. This means that some highly acclaimed bands on PA, but with a low number of ratings, isn’t included.
In an attempt to do the same, I used the PA list as a reference and came up with the following which are potential artists or bands for such a list. I looked for bands with one or multiple higher ranked albums with at least several hundred ratings Steven Wilson (England) Riverside (Poland) Wobbler (Norway) The Mars Volta (USA) Haken (England) Between The Buried And Me (USA) Beardfish (Sweden) Gazpacho (Norway) Leprous (Norway) |

I'm ignoring the cut-off date because it's irrelevant to the concept.
Transatlantic Big Big Train Wobbler Opeth Haken Steven Wilson The above artists seem to move the needle a bit more than most other Modern Prog bands. In truth, all six should be Prog Metal acts as they have bigger fan bases...Devin Townsend probably sells more product than Lifesigns or Jordsjo. |

Y'all should respect the date set by the OP. It's kind of a middle finger to the person who asked the question, and BLATANTLY doing it is just rude. The OP said 1/1/2001. IQ, Opeth, etc., obviously don't count because they had earlier debuts.
