I only like For Your Pleasure (because Eno & Manzanera), the rest being too pop for my tastes (and am not a fan of B Ferry - both as a tyrant leader and crooner voice). Even their debut holds nothing for me.

let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

I have always thought Country Life and Siren to be their peak lp's.....both have a few scorching proggy rock numbers like 'Thrill of It All' on Life and 'Both Ends Burning' from Siren...and some clever quirky ones as well. Those two are not rated as high as the first two which puzzles me. But the first 5 are all solid lp's if you like Roxy to begin with.
Avalon for me is an oddity in that it really signals the true beginning of Ferry's solo career in many ways. It's a good lp but it's not the Roxy of old. Even with Flesh and Blood (and Manifesto) with all the side players it started his run towards being a solo rock crooner.
One does nothing yet nothing is left undone.

Agreed. Country Life is their best, I believe. The violin by Jobson is stellar. The only knock against Siren is that I get a Pavlovian need to vomit every time I hear "Love is the Drug."

Hi,

I like all the albums, and can not say which is best, but I suppose COUNTRY LIFE might be the better of all the albums ... I keep hearing "Out of the Blue" and "The Thrill of It all" ... in my head ...

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Don’t like Roxy
Cheesy album covers
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

I like the music And the album covers, including Siren, which features Bryan Ferry's girlfriend at the time and Mick Jagger's future wife, Jerry Hall. Smile

Favourite band of mine also...@Psychedelic Paul is controversial in his album ratings

It wouldn't be the first time my album ratings have been controversial, and it probably won't be the last. Smile

In my opinion, your ratings aren't controversial.

Most of the time you prefer the more pop and commercial albums, that is, easy to listen, compared to the progressive standards of the seventies.

For example, Roxy Music, who already do art-rock more than progressive, that is, they mix pop and rock with a decadent, dandy aesthetic, are considered progressive especially for their first three albums, which you don't like very much.

You prefer newer, more commercial albums, for which they wouldn't be considered progressive. Nothing wrong with that, sometimes certain groups are better at simpler things. As far as Roxy Music is concerned, I consider their first two albums to be clearly superior to all the others (Stranded and Country Life are still excellent).

The debut album, in my opinion, is a real masterpiece of progressive rock.

But I can understand that you like music that is easier to listen to. For example, I appreciate but I am not a big fan of Yes, I think that 90125, art-pop album, is one of the things that came out best for them, a small masterpiece of its kind. Few true Yes fans think that, I know. I'm not saying it's my favorite, I prefer Relayer and Close to the Edge, but not by much.

Amos Goldberg (professor of Genocide Studies at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem): Yes, it's genocide. It's so difficult and painful to admit it, but we can no longer avoid this conclusion.

My preference for Roxy Music was always in the order of release with each one after the first two becoming more more about Bryan Ferry then the Band and less interesting other then the covers which used to have my parents roll their eyes when they saw them on the table while I was listening to them.

I also do think that the first one was a classic and very different to everything else that existed in 1972.  Bryan Ferry was already planning his solo carrier by releasing his first solo album shortly before the release of Roxy's third album Stranded.

After the high hopes that were created by the first two albums I do remember feeling a little disappointed after excitedly bringing home Stranded and putting it on for the first time.

Kind of ironic that some see RM as pop when they were really not that popular, certainly not in the USA until Avalon showed up. But when Roxy emerged with its debut, the British masses were completely knocked for a loop as it was visual, sonic and certainly mesmerizing , as the old videos may show. Both sides of RM were pushing the envelope, with a HUGE amount of influence among many non-prog bands: the obvious like Duran Duran, Japan, Icehouse, OMD, the Cars, Human League, Ultravox, Gary Numan, The Sex Pistols, The Fixx and countless more etc....Regardless of taste, it must be said that their music has always been original, with truly great musicians and set a certain standard of quality. As for their album covers, one was banned from this site as it was my previous avatar. How is that for rebel rebel.....?Evil Smile
