Viva! On the Manifesto today and For Your Pleasure and mine, it's time for a tribute to Roxy Music, especially if you're currently Stranded at home during lockdown and unable to go out and enjoy the Country Life. No matter whether you prefer the raw Flesh & Blood earthiness of their early albums or the ultra-smooth Siren song call of the Avalon album, there's a Roxy Music album to suit almost everyone's tastes, and even if you don't like the music, you can still enjoy their exotic album covers. Anyway, that's enough waffle from me, as it's time now to take The High Road and let the Roxy Music play. Smile

Biased as per my avatar and my lifelong admiration for RM, For Your Pleasure kick started all kinds of new sounds that would go on to higher levels a few years later, namely punk as on Editions of You as well as trance/electronica with the Bogus Man and of course In Every Dream Home a Heartache. The absolute shock among the public when this came out was palpable, as it was a truly progressive release at the time, going way beyond other 'glam' acts at the time like Bolan or Bowie. Experimental yet accessible and romantic with a quirky feel, fuelled by impressive musicianship . Should be much higher rated than 3 stars but so is taste: open to debate.

One of my favourite bands.

Can't believe you've given their first four albums less than four stars!!!

Yeah, no. Don't agree with your ratings of studio albums in the least. Country Life, For Your Pleasure and Siren, with Eno or Jobson, are their best albums. To give them 3 stars each is to ignore what made Roxy great.

FYP is a fine lp...and I think the first 5 all deserve 4 stars....maybe not Stranded.

It's interesting that Paul gave 4 stars to Flesh and 5 stars to Avalon...when Ferry started to show is true colors as wanting to be more of a romantic crooner and not a rock artist.

It's somewhat surprising to be criticised for underrating albums for a change when I'm more often criticised for overrating albums, but I could get used to it.  You won't be surprised to hear I prefer Bryan Ferry in romantic crooner mode and I have no less than six of his solo albums as well as the one and only Avalon album, which also contains my favourite Roxy Music song - the title track. Smile

I consider them to be more like glam rock or art rock but still a good band.

Me too! I was surprised but also pleased to find a Glam Rock band on ProgArchives. The more the merrier. It'd be nice to see some Hell-Raising albums by the Sweet on PA too. Smile

My favorite is quite certainly For Your Pleasure, though for many many years it was Stranded and/or Siren. I’ve always loved Avalon, and kind of place it in a class by itself (70s Roxy and 80s Roxy seem to work under differing mission statements).

Really though, the only one I can honestly say I don’t care for is Manifesto. Though I should probably give it another go (it’s the only one not in my collection currently).

The first 4 are all equally excellent to me. Classic stuff.

Flesh & Blood is ok but those albums for me represent their descent into MOR territory.

One of the best bands from the 70's. One of the best bands from the UK.
From the first four albums I'd rank
For Your Pleasure
Country Life
Roxy Music
Stranded.

These rankings are not to say best to worst. Just preferences. It does get muddy for the band later. But their version of Jealous Guy, especially live, is incredible. Roxy Music at their worst still cooler and deeper than greatest albums from other bands.

Subjectively speaking, the first four albums are a million time more enjoyable than what followed. I’d probably rank the studio albums:

1. For Your Pleasure
2. Roxy Music
3. Country Life
4. Stranded

[small gap]

5. Siren

[large gap]

6. Avalon

[small gap]

7. Manifesto
8. Flesh + Blood

The first 2 lps are fantastic.. sadly the impact of the first lp was slightly deadened by Pete Sinfields muddy production but For Your Pleasure is magnificent in terms of composition, inventiveness and the sonics of the production. After that, bit by bit i felt that they became more style over substance and eventually a vehicle almost entirely for Brian Ferry's ego

Viva! is one of the best live albums I've ever heard. What an incredible line up they had at the time with John Wetton on bass and Eddie Jobson on keys and violin.
I've always been more a fan of Bryan Ferry's voice than the music itself but they were certainly the best 'art rock/pop' band of the early seventies.
Interestingly Davy O'List (formerly The Nice) was in the early incarnation of the band so they had more than a few prog connections.

I really love this album, especially for the soundscape. My only issue is Bryan Ferry's tendency towards the melodramatic in his vocal performances, but that's a matter of taste really. Otherwise a great album.

I'm surprised you've rated For your Pleasure 3 stars, but Avalon 5 stars.

Both great albums of course, but those scores are invariably usually the other way round..

I guess it's just his taste, and that's fine. There was a time I would have considered Avalon better than For you Pleasure. It's more 'immediate' Often the best albums have to 'sink in' over time. It often depends when you first hear the albums and in what order.

It wouldn't be the first time my album ratings have been controversial, and it probably won't be the last. Smile
