It is true, only us democrats can appreciate Tales From Topographic Oceans. Trump supporters probably listen to Neal Morse and Kansas exclusively

And 2112 thinking it's representative of the band members' current political philosophy.

Just for the record, I have five studio albums by YES and five studio albums by Kansas in my CD collection, but I've no idea who Neal Morse is.

The masterful Tales From Topographic Oceans just sounds like fart noises and nails on a chalkboard to Redhat ears.... Ok i'll stop.

I shouldn't bring Kansas into this.... they don't deserve to be named dropped in the same breath as, ugh, Neal Morse. Their first two albums are really excellent.

I know of one guy who loves the tfto album then read the book that inspired it and thought it was crap. I guess he still likes the music though.

Just for the record, if it matters I have all early YES, the last one being "Relayer" ... ohhh, and I do not have any KANSAS at all ... when it first came out, and we were involved with the FM radio then, it was not as original and "new music" ... as so much of the other things being played ... by that time, I was already into GENTLE GIANT, SUPERTRAMP, GOLDEN EARRING, NEKTAR, HAWKWIND, ANGE, BANCO, PFM, AMON DUUL 2, TANGERINE DREAM, KLAUS SCHULZE, FOCUS, KAYAK, FAMILY/STREETWALKERS, ROXY MUSIC, ENO, all the rest of the "kraut" stuff, and so many of the newer, AND more progressive things coming out of Europe, that by comparison, KANSAS, just seemed not as good or as interesting as the rest of the stuff we were listening to and enjoying big time. For me it was fine, but too much on the pop/rock side of things than it was about the music itself, and it showed continually. I did not see any reason to listen to it much anymore. No disrespect to the band at all ... there was far better and more interesting music around at that time ... but for the American FM radio, it was a big thing ... an American band that we could call "progressive" to rival the English ... biggggg dippadoooo! I'm into the music, not the comparisons in that context.

I guess the big giveaway was when I said I have five albums by each band. I have A LOT of 5-CD box sets.

I have just finished ripping all my cd's onto my new computer. I just calculated that if I decided to play every track in the music folder it would take six months! And I have at least 500 cds that I haven't spun once due to completionist CD buying over the past 5 years....I hope I dont change my musical taste on retiring!!!

Don't you remember, Rich... It was bonkers, like Beatlemania with the Berlin Wall coming down in the background. ...and then there was the girls...so many girls... ![]() ![]() |

Not in 1972, 1973 and 1974 all the way to 1977 and 1978 ... a double album, then, in America, was considered a problem, and a sales issue ... The 5 album thing? Why bother ... Dean ... I have all the albums ... what do I need another copy for? But I have too many things I want to buy, and KANSAS is not one of them ... has nothing to do with their music ... but there are some great things out there that are not being listed or discussed. As much as I discuss the past, it is almost always as a comparison point ... because I am not exactly a live yesterday kind of person ... in fact I find a lot of the old music ... sometimes ... embarrassing, even if funny! NP: My Wife's Bicycle! PS: Maybe I will find the Orb's stuff playing early PF ... that's probably as far back as I go ... just about.
