They started out in the mid 80s as a pretty sloppy psychedelic garage band.  Wayne's voice was much lower and it was all guitar-based, with plenty of noisy freakouts.  Telepathic Surgery was their 3rd album, and their first 2 were similar.  I first got into them in college around this time.  I would never have dreamed that they would evolve like they did.   Their 4th album (In a Priest Driven Ambulance) from a couple of years later started to show signs of evolution towards a more grandiose, ornate sound (though it was still guitar based and noisy), but it was pretty gradual shift throughout the 90s until Zaireeka, which seemed to announce that they were ready to be considered serious modern rock/pop composers.  Then the Soft Bulletin came out and further confirmed it, and you probably know the rest.
