Forgive my ignorance, but are midi-files legally available to be purchased anyway? Presumably they are covered by copyright restrictions.

Most MIDI-based sheet music is freely and legally available.

I doubt it. They would be covered by copyright, but I mean seriously how many people want to hear a super terrible version of a song? I found some websites like this, but I very much doubt that it is authorized by the rights holders.

Midi files are medium for carrying music data, just like a CD or cassette - so they are not copyright in themselves only their content. Therefore if the content is copyright then the midifile is copyright.
 
A midi file of Al Di Meola's Golden Dawn would be copyright however badly played.
 
To be 100% pedantic, they are all unauthorised/unlicensed versions and are thus illegal.

The best you can hope for in any Midifile on the internet is some amateur playing the bassline on a keyboard while wearing boxing gloves - you will never find any midifile recording of Jaco's playing.

I did a websearch and found some of his bassparts as midifiles.  Nothing similar to "The Golden Dawn Suite"
 
Did he do other songs with similar bassgrooves?
