i agree with both extremes we have too many 1 star and 5 star reviews.  but i think their are definately more fanboy 5 star reviews the genre hating 1 star reviews floating around.

but both are a problem, albums have to be judged within their genre.

Hi Man Overboard;

I couldn't agree with you more... I recently went through my humble CD collection, and this was the only album I genuinely rated as 5 stars; (I gave 'Perfect Element' 4.5!).  I am the type of bloke who NEVER gives anything 5/5, but this is a genuine masterpiece, and I'm pleased to see you think so too.

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

As long as the site alows anonymous reviews, this will continue to happen. It
cannot really be stopped, not even regulated. The only thing that will change
this is force the reviewers to sign up, therefore be held accountable, even
then it won't end.

I think that DT are a great band but their fans are really a bit overpressured: c'mon, not even Close to the Edge or Foxtrot or DSODM gave always 5 stars per rewiew. It's unreal.

DT are climbing the top 100 of this site for the their fans not for the (excellent) music they do.

And The Mars Volta too.

I completely agree. Internet so far is lacking control over who's who. Society, in my opinion, must be divided into classes to function efficiently as a society, but internet is just one big mess.

Which is why, occasional annoyances aside, it's such a beautiful thing.  I live below the poverty level, but with the internet, I have access to certain things I normally wouldn't.

I doubt the lower class coal workers in their council houses would agree with you. Although I'm sure they are used to the upper classes turning their noses up at them (as they always tend to do).

I think socialism is the way to go. I suppose your comment comes from living in america?

i agree with man overboard... but its not just prog metal. look at bands like radiohead.

Radiohead are not prog yet their music can be enjoyed by proggers. Yet people give them lots of 1 or 0 star reviews just cos they aint prog.

sticking to prog metal... i noticed that 2 reviews had not been written properly and pointed them out and then flowerchild reported me for doing so and had a go at me just cos he hates dream theater. As a prog reviewer i feel i should be able to point out the naff reviews so that they can be deleted from the site.

Allow me to laugh out loud in a hysterical way. Are you suggesting that there should be seperate sites for the rich and the poor? That would be great -  like the poor mans internet, no layout on the sites, everyone would be anonymous.

But here, on the upperclass world wide web, we won't stand by as these trailer trash nitwits voice their opinion. The nerve they have to just show up and think they are worth anything. Track them back to their ISP, and let's sue them out of their asses!!!

On a serious note, I think it would be fair that you are required to sign up, before reviewing and posting. And you're wrong about society, you don't have to opress people, nor "divide classes", for a society to function efficiently. Proof? About 250 mill. northern Europeans, living under safe conditions, high welfare and high quality of life.

Don't waste energy mate. Leave him at that.  I feel that it is an honour that 'that album' is not liked by all.  Most people, just cause it's DT then it's prog metal (which I like) so it's s**t!  For me it is the album of 2005 although there's still 6 more months to go!

Yes, there are people who gave it five stars simply because it's Dream Theater. Just like the people who gave 90125 five stars when it first came out. Is 90125 considered a masterpiece by the sane people here? NO! You get lots of people who worship it blindly by ANY band. Like flowerchild over here, who seems to be stuck in the 70s. I love 70s prog, but there's some stuff around now that's just as good.

That said, I stand by my review. I've listened to the album too many times, haven't gotten tired of it.  It is Dream Theater's best, this coming from a person who thinks SFAM is too cheesy now and doesn't withstand the test of time after listening to it about four times, nevermind the 10 or so times I've listened to Octavarium, and also a person who thinks about 3 songs of I&W is lame and the other stuff is great. I'm not blind. I love CTTE and all King Crimson stuff moreso than DT. The fact of the matter is, this album is good. Good enough for me to put it next to ANYTHING from the 70s. I gave SDOIT a five star rating at first because of the second disk. That was after about two listens. I learned my lesson and listened ot Octavarium closely before I reviewed it. SDOIT was good the first time, but is only a four star album at best. Octavarium is a five star album.

The problem is that there are TOO MANY people giving it 5 stars for no reason other than it makes them wet their pants.

There was a recent thread on making people sign up before being allowed to submit reviews - I now think that thread should be resurrected for the sanity of many of us

Even the Dream Theater fans must be cringing at some of the odious fanboy stuff that's going up - I mean, "Fantastic" doesn't tell you anything about the album, but lots about the "reviewer". Other DT fans will be tarred with the same brush, and, although I am not a fan, I don't hate them, and have not spitefully given a 0 rating to any of their stuff. The point here is that DT bashing will probably increase as a result of these infantile rantings.

Unconsidered reviews do not belong on the Prog Archives I joined - this site is the Rolls Royce or Bentley of prog sites, not the average joe sedan with a flashy paint job and a spoiler...

Does it really matter. Surely the idea of this site is to show as much prog as possible (well, at least within certain boundaries). Is it better to see a band/album mentioned then we can make our own minds up after listening to it than not to list it? Just keep the reviews clean and respectful. And entertaining.

I agree! I personally don't like prog metal. Therefore, I don't review it because I believe that my reviews cannot be accurate. Moreover, I actually hardly review anything that I don't like.

Well, I was not going to write in this thread, but I remember perfectly when 90125 was released, so it's not history for me, it's personal experience also vbecause I wrote an article for a newspaper and quoted what all the radios said.

All the people who praised this album when released (no 5 stars as we know, because there was not internet on those days).}

The only people tha twas happy with 90125 were the commercial radio DJ's and the pop listeners, no proghead was ever happy with this thing (well always a few will follow Yes despite the quality).

I clearly remember the phrases (To be honest I still have my notebook where I prepared the article) I listened in my car's radio in those days:

  • "At last a Yes album that I can listen without feeling sick"
  • "I never understood Yes, but now I believe they are great"
  • "Yes was artsy fartsy crap, now they reached their peak"
  • "The best Yes album ever"

And some even worst, but the progheads on those days almost didn't buy the album, and those who did never upgraded it to CD.

I have many proghead friends and they all (except one) prefer Yes than Genesis and always made mockery of our taste because Phil Collins crap, but we took revenge then, and all the Yes fans on those days aditted it was crap.

Butin this case everybody is giving Octavarium 5 stars, a few after listening it carefully, but I'm sure most only because it's Dream Theater.

I only heard "I Walk Beside You" and find it closer to Indie or Alternative that to Prog' or even to metal.

Iván

BTW: I'm 90% sure that if somebody checks the IP's of the reviewers you'll find a lot that are repeated, because like magic have appeared many names I never read before in one day.

Yes it does matter!!

I don't want to see Prog Archives become another run-of-the-mill fanclub site.

There are good reasons why this is one of the best sites on the Internet, and the quality of the reviews is just one.

Reviews should not only be clean and respectful, but they should be about the album and the music too - not just rantings about how fantastic it is!!!

(IMO)
