There have been other references on the forum that Peter Giger is not in a prog category, but i would like to note for readers that he was the brilliant drum force behind Dzyan-a band listed in PA-for people who really love great drummers, man, you have to hear him! Astounding,  and nothing less!

Steve Negus                       The greatest drummer I know in the sense of how he have contributed to the music (of Saga)
Simon Phillips                  The drummer that have influenced me the most
Mel Gaynor
Budgie
Jeff Porcaro
Christian Vander
Daniel Denis
Morgan Ågren                    great Swede
Audun Kleive                     great Norweigan
Tony Williams
Though Im a big Genesis fan, I'm not adding Phil Collins, I think he is too uneven. Has played fantastic at times, at other times he does a little too much (especially fills). But The Cinema Show for example...unbelievable.

edit: forgot Budgie!
edit2: can't believe I forgot Mel gaynor too.

These are the guys who have made me "who I am" as a drummer. As always there is not enough room for all the people I like ,but these are the ones who fill in the question "What Would _________ Do?" when I am playing.

Gene Krupa

1. Niel Peart
2. Phil Ehart
3. Clive Burr/Nicko McBrain
4. Stewart Copland
5. Joe Morello
6. Mark Zonder
7. Tim "Herb" Alexander
8. Stanton Moore
9. Jeff Hamilton
10. Gene Hogland
11. Charlie Benante
12. Dino Campanella
13. Omar Hakim
14. Manu Katche
15. Bill Ward
16. Chad Smith
17. Mike Bourdin
18. Brendan Canty
19. DAve Lombardo
20. Will Calhoun

I am probably the only drummer in the world who is not enamorite of Bonham and Ringo. Both of those guys sort of bore me. Zepplin was good ,but there were many other guys doing what Bonham was doing and more at the same time...he just happened to get the spotlight, or be involved in the off stage shennanigans that truly brought Zepplin their fame.
Iv'e got sXe!!!

Have you checked out Koenjihyakkei or Ruins?  Their drummer, Yoshida Tatsuya, is incredible, like Vander with lots and lots of caffeine.
