I first thought this thread was something as a  "crazy joke"

That was sort of the idea.

As for, did prog play any part in Michael Jeckson's work... ?

I posted this somewhere else this morning but relating
to the same issue.

I've just got to the part in the highly recommended
book titled MELLOTRON by Nick Awde (an epic 590
pages filled with prog lore and interviews with
the band users) and it interestingly mentions a
small facet of commentary where the author says
to Ian McDonald:

"I heard somewhere, maybe it was Quincy Jones being
interviewed on the radio in the 80s, that Michael
Jackson uses, or used IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING
as one of his handful of 'sound bible' albums to help
with production excellence.. ."

Something to do with his music being designed to fit
inside the optimum EQ frequencies, as at the time
King Crimson's album did.

Ian McDonald replied that he thought it would probably
be Jackson's engineer if that was the case.

I say we nominate 'The Wiz' as a concept album <g>

yes, i think he is prog. Prog isn't just about long songs and complicated pieces of music played university teachers. If you listen to some of his compositions, they have musicianship that not even classical composers could even fathom.

If you listen to I Just Can't Stop Loving You, there are amazing vocal harmonies, and very werid key changes, e.g. the key change at the end of the song goes from Gm to G#m, that is only one semitone. Not a well known key change, but it is very experimental.

Jackson also really believed in solo instruments as a major part of music and composition. E.g. in his live shows, he allowed his band to go into funk jams, and he even instructed them to just go with the feeling and to experiment with the music itself.

IF THAT'S NOT WHAT BEING PROG IS ABOUT, THEN THIS GENRE IS AS STEREOTYPED AS ANY OTHER GENRE.

Michael Jackson Prog??????

Experimental doesn't mean Prog, you can play experimental POP or Funk or even Rap.

I'd rather be called stereotyped, he plays POP exclusively, there's not a single Progressive Rock inote in his music.

What's a proggressive rock note ? ConfusedTongueWink

I agree though... I like his music and he was gigantically-talented, but prog or prog-influence he was not...

I don't have any problem with the notion that Jacko might have influenced some prog artists on the margins, but I can't think of any examples as I don't know his music very well.
Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

As you I wouldn't matter....If this influence existed, what's not the case IMO.
