Topic: Your music sucks Posted: May 22 2009 at 23:30 |
So here we go. After listening to Mastodon's Crack The Skye, again, then giving Wish You Were Here a listen, I have come to a conclusion.
Progressive rock is pathetic. That is right. These albums are mere showings of how terrible this music is, and you should all be ashamed of listening to it. Especially you. That's right, you heard me, or read me.
First off, it is all built on forcing yourself to like it. Some artists and pants-wetting fans might toss around words such as "deep" "complex" "meaningful" or the best one "it's a grower". These people have stunted mental growth, and should be arrested for attempted assassination...of good music.
It is obvious that progressive rock is inferior to all other genres of music, especially new age-classical and punk rock. Anyone denying this has low self esteem issues and glandular disorders. Pink Floyd? They did nothing but make one note guitar solos for whole albums, and are a complete and utter waste of time to listen to.
That whole avantgarde shtick is ridiculous. What is that, they are good because they purposely play material that isn't music? I'd say these terrible artists such as Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, and Henry Cow were just bumbling drug abusers, rather than musicians.
Your musical taste sucks, and you should all go listen to a REAL album, like the Dirty dancing soundtrack, or a Judas Priest tribute album.

Maybe because Mastodon is somewhat annoying and WYWH sucks.

I keep telling people that, but they just don't seem to listen.
We should just listen to gregorian chants all the time.

You miss one vital point.
A lot of avant-garde music is performed by people who have no clue about music and cannot play their instruments. They just bash pots and pans and sustain one note on a kazoo for hours.
Therefore this type of music is in fact, better than prog for sheer musicianship.

Frank Zappa was clean the whole time. No drugs whatsoever, he even kicked people out of his band if they did any while working with him.
the others i dont know...
btw original poster, you mentioned 2 of the most commercial albums in prog rock. one from the 70s, one from now.
the whole original post sounds like a thought you had that will probably one day change (and probably soon)
i still say people's tastes are different. I personally think there's nothing to find in Focus' music or Atomic Rooster. but then again, i love Miles Davis and Frank Zappa and there's people who dont like them.

Especially the post-1989 stuff. That lot is awful.

Damn right, I do. You all are a gaggle of pretentious fools, and you are all wrong, all the time, always and forever.
Die, you cretins, in your pitiful obscurity as you listen to substandard music.

As a proud cretin who is happy to be part of a gang of pretentious fools I am going on a one-hour walk to a different pub today ( ) so I shall indulge myself in the sheer unadulterated stupidity of listening to Mastodon's Crack the Skye on the way there and Pendragon's Pure on the way back.
I must be one of the most dim-witted of us - these albums were made so long after 1989 that they're almost fresh. I don't even have the sense to stick my head in the sand and stick with the traditonal, classic rubbish that most of my peer group apparently listens to.
So Yah, Boo Sucks - I'm a Teenage Lobotomy. (Well, I'm 51 actually, but I still don't have a cerebellum)

Placation in sin, my poor delusional friend. May your grave be urinated upon by Iggy Pop.
Jokes aside, is it almost unanimous that everyone scoffs and makes fun of Walter's musical ideas, because they think it is a complete crock?

I really dunno. I've never found a problem listening to anything I like from any era without fear of embarrassment. I certainly don't think music has ever "died" as it were, more that certain periods of time have produced less of what I regard as "good stuff" than others.
The older I get the more pleased I am that I'm seeking out new stuff and there's enough of the parasite in me to see what seems to be hot on PA and pick up on it - at least try it anyway - and my reward has been getting really into The Decemberists, Mastodon, Karmakanic, Pendragon and others that I never would have heard without PA.
My son's 17 so I naturally get to hear what's fresh across the Metal genres from him, but he's not into prog and nor are any of my friends. Equally he loves a lot of my old metal so I don't rip him off!
i do have this horrible trait of retreating into sarcasm when i see certain recurring themes in the forum - I don't like to be too serious - just enjoy the forums and my music.
Now, time to set out for the pub and listen to that worthless trash that will probably make it a certainty that Iggy will reform the Stooges for one reason only... so that ALL FOUR of them can p*ss on my grave!
