Yes, definitely one of the best metal bands to have existed, in my opinion. They just contain so many great elements that I love about music.
Deliverance and Still Life are equal 1st place for me. Wreath has taken over the "best opeth track" mantle after BWP. It's almost musical perfection. I think the whole Deliverance album is severely awesome. Every single track is fantastic, and I don't care what anyone says, the production is perfect for the album.

For a long time I thought I was just going nuts for them because it was something so different than what I was used to. But then I realized that I don't know a single other band that takes me on such a wild emotional rollercoaster. I know lots of bands that I couldn't stand to go without listening to for a very long time, but for some reason Opeth is just always an extremely intense journey everytime I listen to any song.
When you do decide to give it another chance, don't just play it in your car while you're driving. Sit down, and put on the headphones, lay in bed, and just listen. Don't do anything else. When you really let yourself go, you'll feel this crazy mix of emotions all within one song. It's the most ridiculous feeling I've ever felt. |

When I saw them in October, Akerfeldt starting off Deliverance (song not album) by saying, "The song coming up is like an IQ test. It's an absolute f**king masterpiece. If you don't like it, then you are dumb" etc etc. Although it was completely a joke and he was just doing his funny cocky persona that he does on stage, I'm pretty sure that it's a testament to the fact that the song, plus the whole album is absolute gold.

On topic, Deliverance is the only Opeth album I own, but I plan to buy more. Which one should I go for first, Morningrise or My Arms?

No music out there takes me as far and wide as Opeth. And I like the songs better with each listen. "Ghost of Perdition" used to be too much for me but now I think it's among their best. I'm a huge Watershed fan, Lotus Eater and Hessian Peel are for sure top 10 Opeth tracks. But I'm reaching further back into the catalog and be greatly rewarded. I have everything backwards from Watershed to BWP except Deliverance. Still Life is probably next after I digest Ghost Reveries a little more.
Best Metal Band ever? Hard to say for sure but they're close. Metallica right after Justice came out ruled from a pretty high perch. Who else? Queensryche - they're great but not album after album like Opeth. Iron Maiden? Deep Purple? Sabbath? even the Grandfathers don't quite measure up in totality. Granted, Opeth has never written anything to match "War Pigs" but then again that's probably the best metal song ever written. Zeppelin isn't metal, Rush is actually comparable but their more prog rock than metal.
Ok best metal band ever spanning their entire career. Metallica's three album peak may never be topped though.

Opeth absolutely rocked on Wednesday, just wish I wasnt standing infront of the Front of House desk, couldnt see anything but the back of peoples heads.  They played better than they did in May, they seem to have gelled a bit more since then. Cynic were fantastic as well, really looking forward to getting my hands on the new album, Traced in Air. Missed The Ocean so I dont know what they're like.

Tell me about it man, shame that 90% of the crowd weren't really getting into it that much  The funny thing is they played all my favourites! I'm so pleased they played Godhead's Lament, they hardly ever do. The Drapery Falls was phenomenal as well, but my highlights had to be either Heir Apparent and Deliverance. I was bleeding internally after those songs they owned so much. I'd see them again, definitely. I still can't feel my spine

If I'm honest, anything off Still Life satisfies most Opeth fans. However, Godhead's Lament is my favourite Opeth song ever, and The Moor and Serenity Painted Death would also make me bleed happiness. Before they played Godhead's Lament Mikael said something like "we haven't played this in a while, please forgive me if I f**k up" or something like that. It was then I realised just how lucky i was!

Saw Opeth live in Bristol last night with my metal-head sons - wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not. But WOW... they blew me out of the water - they were amaaayyyyysing!! I'm converted! Never before been convinced by their soft-loud approach but they really do it seamlessly - such skillful musicians.... I "APPRECIATE" them! Hey also - Cynic were great too (and we met 2 of them after) - well recommend them too - great to see them reunited... Ohharr

I dont know about the intro they used, though. it worked fantastically with When on the live album but not so much with Heir Apparent, just starts a bit too slow.
The Drapery Falls and Demon of the Fall were both phenomenal. Godheads Lament was good, but they played Serenity Painted Death the last time I saw them which was brilliant.

Can anyone remember the set list from this tour at the moment (particularly Bristol last Friday). For some reason I always forget even though it was so awesome. I remember Demon of the Fall, Godhead's Lament, Grand Conjuration, Heir Apparent, The Lotus Eater, Deliverance, Windowpane? (from Damnation?), the start of Hessian Peel.
What else was there?

F**K YEAH! Opeth i comming to South America in '09. Can't wait man, i SIMPLY just can't wait. Opeth is one of my all-time favourite metal bands (along with Dream Theater, 1st, Ayreon and Shadow Gallery, 2nd, Death and Atheist, 3rd, Psychotic Waltz and OPETH, 4th and Savatage, Queensr˙che and Fates Warning, 5th) and i will definitely save money from NOW (like i did when i went to see DT at Rio de Janeiro) so i can enjoy myself, buy lots of albums that i just simply can't buy here and buy LOTS of merchandise. I just hope that OPETH fans down the equator are not as retarded as the usual extreme metal fan here. . .

Well, how about a mosh pit at a DT concert? I was part of the only moshign pit in the show and it was quite fun.

Fantastic band. Real artists.
Discovered them with "Blackwater Park" back in '01 and that's still one my two favourite albums of this decade.
Love "Deliverance" too, but "Damnation" perhaps lacked the balance of the heavier stuff. "Watershed" is excellent too. "Ghost Reveries" I didn't like as much.
Surely one of the very best metal bands active today.
But with the loss of López and Lindgren I think they lost a bit of swing and finesse too. Still, can't wait to see them next year here in South America!!!

Here's a request for you Opeth fans...a have a gaping hole in my Opeth discography because I discovered them with Morningrise, but didn't check them out again till Blackwater Park. Don't really know why that happened, just kinda did...
Anyways, as I'll be seeing them iin about 2 weeks, what are the essential songs I should be familiar with from Still Life and My Arms, apart from Demon of the Fall? I'm already getting an idea from this thread, but just wanted to get some insight.
And do they still play anything from Orchid?
