Well it's about time someone stepped up and created a thread for the greatest metal band to ever exist! I pretty much summed up my love in that one sentence. I think their music is untouched in the metal world, for many reasons. And I know there are loyal fans out there on PA. In abundance. I never get bored of Still Life. I've listened to Godhead's Lament about 200 times now and i still can't get enough. They are yet to release a bad album! Barre Watershed of course...

What are your opinions on the genius that is Mikael Akefeldt and his musical incarnation, Opeth?

Definitely one of my favorite metal bands, I really love everything from Blackwater Park onward (Still Life never really grabbed me for some reason).  Favorite album is Ghost Reveries.

Ah, Alex, not surprised to see this thread started up by you.
And you by now should know how I feel about the band tooBig smile

Was listening to My Arms, Your Hearse last night. Such a stunning album along with Still Life and Blackwater Park (one of my top 5 albums that one). Not so keen on their post BWP albums, they just dont seem to come up with such increadible riffs or poigniant acoustic sections anymore.

Anyone else a big fan of Orchid?

Opeth is extremely awesome, but not the best metal band ever. Still, Blackwater Park, Still Life, My Arms Your Hearse and Damnation are all amazing albums. Definitely one of the best prog metal bands out there...

I "discovered" Opeth with this album, when it came out. Didn't know anything about the band, saw it in a record shop and thought, why not get this, looks intriguing. Wise decision. Love this album, still one of my favourites by them, but then, most of their albums are my favourites... The Apostle In Triumph is fantastic and I love the solo at the end. Great song! Keep coming back to it again and again.
This album, Morningrise and Blackwater Park are the ones I keep coming back to when I want to listen to Opeth (I don't neglect the others as well, don't worry...)

I used to be totally obsessed with this band, especially my senior year in highschool and freshman year of college (2003-2004).  What stood out about the band is that they had no bad songs (except Credence...god that song is boring) no matter what album I played. Anyways, I think I listened to them a little too much.  Also, not to sound like a prick or nothing, but I think I've "outgrowned" (maybe over-listened is a better word) their music.  Occasionally, I'll put on Still Life or Morningrise.  I still respect the hellouta em and wish Mikael all the success he truly deserves.

They also put on a great live show.  If you live in England, do yourself a favor and catch them with CYNIC! God, how I wished those two toured the states together.

I know what you mean about The Apostle..., but Forests of October is the one that does it for me. Surprisingly, Morningrise doesnt really do it for me. The songs are good but the album just doesnt grab me the way Orchid and the three subsiquent albums do.

My opinion? I've always thought of Opeth as one of those bands I should like in theory but do very little for me when I actually listen to to them.

Love everything from http://www.progarchives.com/album.asp?id=5798 - My Arms, Your Hearse  onward ( except Damnation which I have always found a bit boring). They are truly a unique band and deserves all the praise they are given.

I have always liked Morningrise and I see that it does not receive so much credit... I feel it's probably one of the band's cult albums...
Still Life is probably my favourite (followed by B. Park)
Their latest seems like a return to more melodic/intelligent forms, as I liked the previous couple of albums but not up to a crazy extent...

Opeth has been one of my favorite bands since I was introduced to them by my roommate 4 years ago.  It began with Damnation, though ironically that is probably one of my less favorite albums by them now.  I love it all up to and including Ghost Reveries, but Watershed has not yet done it for me.  Sometimes it takes a while to finally break an album in though, I'm still hoping for that. I saw them live once, a Halloween show along with Nevermore, one of the great musical experiences of my life!

Every mosh pit I've been in at an Opeth concert has been reasonable......mainly due to the soft acoustic interludes and such.  Join that sh*t, go buck wild and for the love of god, get as drunk as possible.  That's the one and only true way to enjoy a metal concert.SmileSmileSmileSmile

/thread derail but related to quoted post

I actually hate drinking at a gig, unless it's a gig I deliberately want to forgotLOL
I always want to take in the experience as sober as possible and remember as much as I can.

The only time I got truly smashed was at this gig that was not only free entry, but free beer providedLOL
The band was a very terrible mosh/metalcore band.
It was held in a record store, and by about 2 hours after I showed up, I was rolling around on the carpet laughing at the posters on the wallsLOLLOL

I love the album for the most part. Definitely better than the what the consensus here is. I do think some tracks get too repetitive (the end of "A Fair Judgement" especially), though some of the repetition works in their favor. It definitely took a few listens to appreciate the whole thing, but after those few listens I've been loving it.

The only Opeth album I've not really gotten into is Orchid. I don't like the songs as much and the production is weak. The production on Morningrise is nearly as bad, but I think the songs are better. I'm game for another shot, though. Actually, I don't like the debut releases by most of my favorite metal bands (BTBAM, Dream Theater, Meshuggah, The Dillinger Escape Plan, etc.) it seems.

Anyway, I absolutely love all of their albums from My Arms Your Hearse to the present, with Ghost Reveries as my favorite. Morningrise is also good, and I like it, but I can't say I love it like the rest. Brilliant band.

Also, it should be noted that Mikael is hilarious on stage.

Not very much into Opeth, (you know there´s a lot of good bands out there, and got not time enough for all of them), though I like it a lot .
Yesterday I bought my ticket for their next show in Bilbao with Cinyc and (The Ocean?).
I hope it´ll be a great show.Smile

For a long time I thought I was just going nuts for them because it was something so different than what I was used to. But then I realized that I don't know a single other band that takes me on such a wild emotional rollercoaster. I know lots of bands that I couldn't stand to go without listening to for a very long time, but for some reason Opeth is just always an extremely intense journey everytime I listen to any song.

When you do decide to give it another chance, don't just play it in your car while you're driving. Sit down, and put on the headphones, lay in bed, and just listen. Don't do anything else. When you really let yourself go, you'll feel this crazy mix of emotions all within one song. It's the most ridiculous feeling I've ever felt.

Yes, definitely one of the best metal bands to have existed, in my opinion. They just contain so many great elements that I love about music.

Deliverance and Still Life are equal 1st place for me. Wreath has taken over the "best opeth track" mantle after BWP. It's almost musical perfection. I think the whole Deliverance album is severely awesome. Every single track is fantastic, and I don't care what anyone says, the production is perfect for the album.

When I saw them in October, Akerfeldt starting off Deliverance (song not album) by saying, "The song coming up is like an IQ test. It's an absolute f**king masterpiece. If you don't like it, then you are dumb" etc etc. Although it was completely a joke and he was just doing his funny cocky persona that he does on stage, I'm pretty sure that it's a testament to the fact that the song, plus the whole album is absolute gold.

No music out there takes me as far and wide as Opeth. And I like the songs better with each listen. "Ghost of Perdition" used to be too much for me but now I think it's among their best. I'm a huge Watershed fan, Lotus Eater and Hessian Peel are for sure top 10 Opeth tracks. But I'm reaching further back into the catalog and be greatly rewarded. I have everything backwards from Watershed to BWP except Deliverance. Still Life is probably next after I digest Ghost Reveries a little more.

Best Metal Band ever?  Hard to say for sure but they're close. Metallica right after Justice came out ruled from a pretty high perch. Who else? Queensryche - they're great but not album after album like Opeth. Iron Maiden? Deep Purple? Sabbath? even the Grandfathers don't quite measure up in totality. Granted, Opeth has never written anything to match "War Pigs" but then again that's probably the best metal song ever written. Zeppelin isn't metal, Rush is actually comparable but their more prog rock than metal.

Ok best metal band ever spanning their entire career. Metallica's three album peak may never be topped though.

Opeth absolutely rocked on Wednesday, just wish I wasnt standing infront of the Front of House desk, couldnt see anything but the back of peoples heads.LOL They played better than they did in May, they seem to have gelled a bit more since then. Cynic were fantastic as well, really looking forward to getting my hands on the new album, Traced in Air. Missed The Ocean so I dont know what they're like.

Tell me about it man, shame that 90% of the crowd weren't really getting into it that much

The funny thing is they played all my favourites! I'm so pleased they played Godhead's Lament, they hardly ever do. The Drapery Falls was phenomenal as well, but my highlights had to be either Heir Apparent and Deliverance. I was bleeding internally after those songs they owned so much. I'd see them again, definitely.

I still can't feel my spine

If I'm honest, anything off Still Life satisfies most Opeth fans. However, Godhead's Lament is my favourite Opeth song ever, and The Moor and Serenity Painted Death would also make me bleed happiness. Before they played Godhead's Lament Mikael said something like "we haven't played this in a while, please forgive me if I f**k up" or something like that. It was then I realised just how lucky i was!

Saw Opeth live in Bristol last night with my metal-head sons - wasn't sure if I was going to like it or not.

But WOW... they blew me out of the water - they were amaaayyyyysing!!  I'm converted!  Never before been convinced by their soft-loud approach but they really do it seamlessly - such skillful musicians....

I "APPRECIATE" them!LOL

Hey also - Cynic were great too (and we met 2 of them after) - well recommend them too - great to see them reunited...

I dont know about the intro they used, though. it worked fantastically with When on the live album but not so much with Heir Apparent, just starts a bit too slow.

The Drapery Falls and Demon of the Fall were both phenomenal. Godheads Lament was good, but they played Serenity Painted Death the last time I saw them which was brilliant.

Can anyone remember the set list from this tour at the moment (particularly Bristol last Friday).  For some reason I always forget even though it was so awesome.  I remember Demon of the Fall, Godhead's Lament, Grand Conjuration, Heir Apparent, The Lotus Eater, Deliverance, Windowpane? (from Damnation?), the start of Hessian Peel.

What else was there?

F**K YEAH! Opeth i comming to South America in '09. Can't wait man, i SIMPLY just can't wait. Opeth is one of my all-time favourite metal bands (along with Dream Theater, 1st, Ayreon and Shadow Gallery, 2nd, Death and Atheist, 3rd, Psychotic Waltz and OPETH, 4th and Savatage, Queensr˙che and Fates Warning, 5th) and i will definitely save money from NOW (like i did when i went to see DT at Rio de Janeiro) so i can enjoy myself, buy lots of albums that i just simply can't buy here and buy LOTS of merchandise. I just hope that OPETH fans down the equator are not as retarded as the usual extreme metal fan here. . .

Well, how about a mosh pit at a DT concert? I was part of the only moshign pit in the show and it was quite fun. Big smileApprove

Fantastic band. Real artists.
Discovered them with "Blackwater Park" back in '01 and that's still one my two favourite albums of this decade.

Love "Deliverance" too, but "Damnation" perhaps lacked the balance of the heavier stuff. "Watershed" is excellent too. "Ghost Reveries" I didn't like as much.

Surely one of the very best metal bands active today.
But with the loss of Lķpez and Lindgren I think they lost a bit of swing and finesse too. Still, can't wait to see them next year here in South America!!!

Here's a request for you Opeth fans...a have a gaping hole in my Opeth discography because I discovered them with Morningrise, but didn't check them out again till Blackwater Park.  Don't really know why that happened, just kinda did...

Anyways, as I'll be seeing them iin about 2 weeks, what are the essential songs I should be familiar with from Still Life and My Arms, apart from Demon of the Fall? I'm already getting an idea from this thread, but just wanted to get some insight.

And do they still play anything from Orchid?

Thanks.

Yeah, I heard someone heckling for Serenity Painted Death. To be honest, they couldn't really go wrong with anything off the Still Life album. I think an unforgettable gig would be if they played Still Life in its entirety, from the the peculiar dissonance of The Moor right through to the closing clean section. Highly unlikely however.

The already mentioned Godheads Lament and Demon of the Fall are the most likely for you to see them play, but When, April Etheril and The Amen Corner (from My Arms Your Hearse) and The Moor, Moonlaps Vertigo, Face of Melinda and White Cluster (Still Life) are the essential ones from those albums IMO.

Kibble, I agree with you on them playing Still Life all the way through, but its Balckwater Park that would send me off the deep end.

I´m not sure in its entirety as it was someway difficult to hear Mikael with allthe crowd
clapping and whistling. Sure they played Coil- as intro-, The lotus eater, Godhead´s lament,
and my favourite song by them in the bisses The drapery falls.

I like them a lot but am very far from being an Opeth´s expert and don´t really know
every song in detail

I like Opeth because they take chances. I saw them opening for Porcupine Tree a few years back, and I hadn't heard a note of their music prior. They were very polished, and very professional. I met one of the guitar players after their gig, and he was very nice, and very approachable.

They just seem like all around nice guys, and they like to push what they do to it's next logical step. Not sure if I would call him a genius, because my knowledge of metal is pretty bad, so I have no frame of reference to compare Opeth to. I do know that I like what I hear from them, though.

And I hope I don't alienate too many hardcore Opeth fans by saying this, but, I think Watershed is one of the best albums I have heard in a long time. It's consistent, produced well, and the playing on it is excellent.

I'll bump an old thread with some news for fans of Blackwater Park Wink Opeth are planning to play the entire album five times next year, once in Sweden, Germany and England and twice in USA. Those will apparently be pretty much their only gigs next year, the rest of the year is spent preparing new material for the next Opeth album, and there's a possibility of the Åkerfeldt & Wilson & Portnoy project materializing finally (in reality an Åkerfeldt & Wilson project with Portnoy just providing drum tracks, Å says) and perhaps some work on the Å solo album as well.

This piece of goodies was brought to you exclusively by Soundi:  http://www.soundi.fi/node/9792/Opeth/suunnittelee/Blackwater/Park/-keikkoja - http://www.soundi.fi/node/9792/Opeth/suunnittelee/Blackwater/Park/-keikkoja

I got into Opeth about a bit less than a month ago, and I really love their music. I used to really dislike the growls, but because of Opeth I now really dig them! I've got three albums so far, Ghost Reveries, Blackwater Park and Deliverance, though I'm planning to buy much more as soon as possible. Blackwater Park is good I think, but overrated, while I really think Deliverance's rating on this site is  bit low. I can see the weak points of the album, but I think songs like Master's Aprentices and Deliverance are great. Ghost Reveries was the album I started with, and I think that it is a true masterpiece, it's stunning. I'm planning to pick up Still Life soon, as what I've heard from it sounds fantastic.
