^ Please don't try to be holier than Pope.

Admin edit in quoted text from the song is ridiculous.

I think the idea is clear: most of forum members don't use mentioned words and, even if they sometimes do it, no need to invent senseless substitutes.

I have no need to be holier than anyone, nor do I need your assistance in realising that. Wink

I know it appears ridiculous to edit the quoted text - but it would not be correct for me to quote the rules and then ignore them - that would be worse than ridiculous - it would be hypocritical. Your quoting of that lyric was to make a humorous point, the means in which you did it infringed the site rules, I have no choice but to edit the post.

This is a moderated site - that is something you agree to when registering as a member. We are never heavy-handed and always "sign" the edit and you are free to question that decision.

Most forum members do not use profanity, some do and the Auto-censor is designed to trap that. My proposal to use senseless words is a suggestion to stop people relying on the auto-censor and to inject some humour into the result when they do.

Personally I find swearing to be extremely funny, in the real world I use it all the time, I would imagine that many of us use it without thinking, reducing it to nothing more than verbal punctuation. Here there is no need, if you cannot articulate a thought without swearing then use the Censored emoticon - it's not difficult.

So, I find the notion of this light-hearted proposal and the possible humorous outcomes amusing.

Have you ever seen the movie "The Breakfast Club"? It is about a group of teenagers in Saturday morning detention.  The movie was pretty funny, but every other word was a swear word of some sort.  They showed the movie on regular TV filtering out all of the swear words with the "fluffy" words as mentioned above, and it made the movie even 10 times funnier.

What if someone is offended by words like 'cuddle', 'fluffy' and 'tickle'? Personally I'm fine with 'cuddle' and 'tickle', but 'fluffy' makes me think of fluffers and thus slightly offends me. But then again, I find asterisks even more offensive. If you look closely, they look just like little cuddles. Dead

Asterisks imply fine print.*

In the sanitised TV version of Risky Business when Curtis Armstrong says to Cruise: 'Say "what the flip."... If you can't say it, you can't do it.'  - just cracks me up. LOL

I wonder if there's such a "fluffy" version of Martin Scorsese's Casino. LOL

I rarely swear (except when I'm with those no-good friends of mine who contaminated me with the way of swearing in the first place) - which probably makes me Jim Garten's main antagonist. Wink But wait, I am actually often amused by both godawful and "excellent" swearing (well, that's me...). Take Scorsese's The Departed for example (since Vompatti mentioned his films): half of the script should be licensed if posted here on PA, but it makes me chuckle (especially Mark Walhberg's character swears endlessly).

As far as the suggestion goes, it gets my vote, if there's actually a serious problem we're talking about (IMO, some members tend to be agressive and disrespectful, but that doesn't necessarily imply swearing, ego steroids could do just fine...). For me, humorous swearing can be ok (of course, depends on the humorous moment), on the other hand replies to serious conversations such as "you don't know what the **** you're talking about" are unacceptable.

Anyway, I prefer asterisks.

^ That's cool too.

The first time I posted on a Gothic-rock message-board way back in the dim dark distant past before forums existed, I inserted my own asterisks in a post and was summarily flamed by someone who entered into a long diatribe on why Asterix was not welcome because he was a Gaul not a Goth. I've tended to avoid asterisks since then Embarrassed

Oooooh, good one.
Talking about comics, I began to think of using angry smileys instead of typing "censored" dirty words. That would be nicer.

I have a feeling this has the potential to be more fun than randomly moving people's threads around because then we'll just have to make up our own substitute cuss words and then you guys just try and keep up with auto bleeping those out. Aww, klerm! LOL  And before I forget ***************************************.

This cuddly thread has gotten to be one kittened-up pile of flowers. Why the moonbeam should I give a spaceman, if some scented bunnybunny wants to rosely express his pink opinion about some heavenly leaves that none of you puppydogs give a yellow babykins about.

See how it works? I bet I've just filled your innocent minds with one big pile of dirty words.  Big smile

Nah, best example of that was Die Hard 2 played on a local station...where the phrase "melon farmer" replaced, uh, something else that started with an M and an F.

Speaking as a fan of that movie, the edited version is totally neutered.  Even cut the pot smoking scene.  Boo! Angry  If you haven't seen it go for the original.  (Bunch of melon farmers LOL)

Perfect - that entire sentence manages to sound like a rant, yet raises a grin at the same time

Not sure why a good Anglo-Saxon word or two should offend while its Latin counterpart acquires a reluctant respectability.  Still, only the most penurious imagination takes offense over words, especially in view of the genuinely offensive deeds which plague our world.
