The same is true for France, although to a slightly lesser degree; at least some French musicians are named occasionally (most notably Christian Vander).
So please, guys and girls, if you make a poll for "best musician" and only know musicians from the USA or the UK then make your poll "Best .... (fill in any instrumental category) of UK and USA". Or go and make yourselves more knowledgable.

You complain that there isnt enough attention towards musicians from different places, but the only modern band that you even listen to and actually praise it the red masque, while you completely disregard entire subgenre's of music just because they're modern. So now you know how I feel feel when I see another poll between Yes Genesis, ELP ect.

And if you want some good drumming from foreign places check out Toe, Japanese Math rock band all about the drums. Unless it's too modern.

Not true. The Red Masque is simply the only modern band I like. That does not mean I haven't heard others.

If you only like one modern band, than all I can tell you is that you didnt look hard enough, if you even looked at all.

with all respect: you are not the guardian of my taste. modern bands are too controlled. I tried Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and they had a certain appeal, but there were a few things I disliked too. nevertheless, they are certainly better than most modern bands.
there are some new bands I love, but they are not in the archives and probably don't belong either (although there are strong prog relations), like Hadouk from France or the international trio Orientacion. of what is in the archives: I have listend to a lot of new stuff and was almost always disappointed

I'd rather stay away from these 'who's better, who's best' polls.  It's like arguing who makes a better peanut butter and jelly sandwich...my mom or yours?  It doesn't matter!  Just eat your sandwich and be thankful you have it!  The same with 'who's fastest?' or 'who's slowest?' or 'which band has gone the longest without having a bath?'  I don't really know nor do I wish to know!  It gets up my nose!

For me, if you know what I like, then I prefer to have suggestions...like a buffet.  You like this?  How 'bout try some of that.  If you like it, and I don't prefer it, then that's ok!

Now, where's my peanut butter.....Wink

I once justifiably earned a reputation for trouble when I constantly attacked Best of polls for being incorrect . My point being that they should be "My favourite" so as to avoid the stain of objectivity. Pedantic, yes. But then I thought, who cares. It's like arguing as to who the 14th most powerful drummer in the world is, or fighting over whether to use G or G7 in a song (True story - it seems that Howe & Anderson actually had this arguement during Tales).

There isn't and never will be a "best" musician.

However, you can have your favourite musician as you may well prefer one style to another.

Untrue.  There is John Zorn. Wink

You mean Frank Zappa? Wink

While it doesn't actually constitute proof, I will point out that no one has a more impressive allmusicguide page than John Zorn.  Just look at it; it's unreal.

Haha, I know, Zorn is awesome. I've only unfortunately heard samples though, I'm working on getting into his vast discography of awesome-soundingness. Tongue

You beat me to it.

Even better, how about YOU make a poll with musicians that are often more overlooked on it? Surely then there will be a poll that satisfies your needs.

I'm sick of "people complaining about various things" threads. Just do something about it. Stern%20Smile

It's so easy to avoid those polls... just DO NOT CLICK on them....

And rejoice for your superior vast knowledge of bands from all over the world... most people here haven't heard those, so it would be quite stupid for them to create polls about artists they don't know about....

Remember, japanese prog or malaysian prog or namibian prog is not so easy to get... actually, sometimes even US or UK's prog is not so easy to find! (we're not talking pop music... you don't find it in every cd store) so MAYBE we can forgive all this people who don't know as much as you....

It's expensive, also. O, hell... let's make money so we can buy more prog from other countries so we can create new polls with more of a United Nations flavor to them....

So I think it's btter just to AVOID those polls.....

In the other hand, I'm really sick of people going into threads about genres they don;t like just to say how much they dislike double bass drumming or how inappropiate a genre's name is....

Tell me Baldfriede, can't I also be sick of that???

Most of my favorite musicians are indeed from the US. So what? It's the biggest country of the world, from a rock music standpoint but from many others too. Why shouldn't this reflect in the top artist polls ... and does every person interested in music around the globe have to know Eugen Cicero? Well, pianists should at least have heard of him. Christian Vander? I would not know him if it wasn't for this website, and I don't think that's a bad thing either. Those musicians may be great, they may even be better than many of the more popular artists from the US or UK, but they're obscure ... it doesn't have anything to do with quality, but popularity. And "best artist" polls are - at least partially - about popularity too. They might be more appropiately called "favorite artists" though.

They're not included because many of the people who make the polls simply haven't heard of them, and a poll with them would tend to be rather uninteresting because a majority of the community here probably hasn't heard of them.

There's no distribution requirement for a Best Musician poll.

Precisely. Clap

Expanding on that, I have favourite albums but they are not necessarily 5/5 rated from me.  I just like them.

For instance, H to He Who Am the Only One is a 4/5 rated album (it's close to 4.5) yet even though an album like Godbluff is 5/5 (to me), I prefer H to He (meaning, I will likely play it more often).
