Ulver's CD's are definitely slow cookers. Take a while to grow on me but i end up loving them. so far Perdition city is my favorite although i only have Shadows of the Sun to compliment it.

get blood inside. you have to methinks. it's my favorite (never was until recently--it's a slow one for sure (not in pace but in time it takes to grow) but is worth every cent of time...get it soon!) and that's what I gotsa say. |

I like Perdition City, Blood Inside and Themes the best from newer Ulver. For early Ulver, Bergtatt is where it's at.

I adore Bergtatt, and Perdition City is damn good.

Starting from the metal scene, as an experimental black metal band and progressing at such a level is something really unique. Not many people could get easily into the meaning of their music. I don't believe that bands such as Sigur Ros etc have too many in common with Ulver. For me, starting from the extreme genre, has given them this uniqueness. I still find them 'extreme' in a way. All their albums are worth checking, but I personally love Themes... Having read the book, it sounds as the perfect soundtrack. Arcturus is my recommendation for people who like Ulver very much. |

I also got into Ulver because I was trying metal at the time. I turned out not to like much metal, but Ulver's later works have stuck with me. I hate Arcturus. ;P
It seems that I like the "song-ish" albums, most - I've kept hold of Blood Inside, Perdition City and Themes from William Blake. The ambient stuff affects me far less, and besides, when Ulver write songs they don't sound much like anyone else's so they seem far more interesting. (probably already posted in this thread but redundancy is cool too) |

Arcturus - Kinetic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzdarZmotck It's not Garm, but the vocals are spot on. Fantastic track. Edited by moe_blunts - February 23 2008 at 12:38 |

1 word on Ulver: GARM!
there we go, but yes love Ulver. mucho. Blood Inside, Perdition City, Shadows of the Sun, Themes, and Kveld are all great (and that's all I've heard of the group) It's just how lush it can sound, and emotional. and yes, Garm is amazing. |

Yet another band on my always-growing list of people to check out.
Right now the only appearance of Garm in my collection is on the Gathering's Souvenirs album (he duets with Anneke on "A Life All Mine").

I watched a couple of YouTube clips by this band, after having read about them on some other music forum, and got really curious, so about two weeks ago I went to the Ulver section in my local record store and purchased Blood Inside. I initially wanted to get Perdition City but it wasn't available. Blood Inside has proven to be a great introduction, though, what a gripping record it is! Listening to it right now, as a matter of fact... Need to buy Perdition City online sometime soon.

Noone mentions the greatest black metal album of all time, Nattens Madrigal
Whatever music Ulver makes it comes out right. They are one of the greatest bands of today for sure.
