I have heard most of their work but only have Bergtatt,Perdition City and Blood Inside and I like them alot.Their sound is constantly evolving and changing, and I think that makes them something pretty special.I especially like their early stuff, like Bergtatt

Bergtatt and Kveldsanger(spelling?) are markedly different than their later stuff, although Ulver really is impossible to classify.
W&B is a great album to have especially if you have Ulver's earlier works, becuase it shows just how radically different the music changed, which I give extra kudos to, because of having to start entirely over with a new fan base from their black metal works

I'm not interested in their black-metal period though.

Funny, I made an observation that most Ulver fans are Metal enthusiasts, though the band released just two metal albums out of more than ten. I guess there are just artists who only a chosen underground scene is exposed to, even though people of other taste would greatly enjoy it, and I'd really like to change that.

Unfortunately that's how most people know Ulver. I would go as far as to say even those who are knowledgeable with the field of experimental/post rock really have not heard much from Ulver, even though its under the same genre(here at PA) as GYBE, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, and other such sounds
edit: albeit all these bands sound distinctly different from one another, yet share some similar artistic qualities

well, sign me on the fanlist; I've listened to all of their albums and like them a lot
as for the metal loving fans of ulver, i think they always kept something really mean/agressive/dark in their sound, even on the silence themed eps and that's probably why it was easy for metal fans to connect with

Every single thing this band has released is impressive, their ability to master so many styles is absolutely incredible. All of the "black metal trilogy" is stunning (especially Nattens Madrigal, which I would say is THE perfect black metal album) and their more recent electronic/post-rock works are equally brilliant (Perdition City is my favorite). In addition to the obvious ones already mentioned I'm a big fan of Lyckantropen Themes, a spellbinding piece of downbeat electroncica which I'd recommend to anybody with a taste for ambient music.
Fans of Ulver's black metal period should also check out the first two Borknagar albums (which feature Garm and aren't too stylistically removed from Bergtatt and Nattens) and anything by Arcturus up to The Sham Mirrors (all of which is remarkably avant-garde and boundary pushing in the metal world, further accented by his majestic clean vocals).

I only have their electronic albums Perdition City and Blood Inside. Perdition City is a great album. I love the atmosphere and the sound of it (it reminds me of the Sin City movie). Blood Inside had some good moments, but it didn't do much for me compared to Perdition City. I haven't heard anything from their metal era.

Sure, Perdition City and are http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=9724 - Kveldssanger worthy checking out, the only ones that has Glamour and elegance, the rest seems like the kids enjoys them more, maybe is the growling or the noise...
I will recommend getting Perdition City, then Blake's, then Kveld.... and then the suicide mission towards the rest.
I guess the experimental "elegant + growling + noise/heavy" is not a fusion i find amusing...but for that matter this "artistic" band went on Subjective..

I'm not one to exaggerate, but I can't find a single flaw in Blood Inside.
It's astonishingly solid work, and definitely one my all time favorites.
There ain't no band that carries progressivity into the new century as strongly and innovatively as Ulver.

I was surprised by their http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD.asp?cd_id=9724 - Kveldssanger album, as I'm a fan of folk music. I tried to tell some other prog folk fans about this album, as they might not search folk from discographies of this kind of band. I don't think it excatly a total groundbreaking masterpiece, but moody and good release still!

I felt the same way as well. Good solid release, albeit nothing miraculous, just a nice album to have.

I wouldn't worry about it Ivan, people like him make up their minds and are adamant in their decisions, waste of time trying to help them find new things usually.

Kveldssanger was one of those albums that I long overlooked in their discography... it struck me as a "nice" album, but nowhere near the brilliant heights of most of their other albums. I think it's really an album that you have to hear in the right mood, because out of nowhere I suddenly found myself completely in love with it. From a subjective viewpoint it may not be a particularily outstanding album, but I find it to be utterly gorgeous and consider it one of my favorite folk albums ever. Then again, I'm probably a little biased due to the name on the front cover...
Also check out When At Night the Wood Grouse Plays by German neo-classical metal band Empyrium if you like Kveldssanger, it's a bit less dark but a very comparable and almost equally excellent release.

I have Kveldsanger and Perdition City. Kveldsanger has to be one of my favorite folk albums, as unlikely as it may seem. I'm a sucker for melancholy in music, and Ulver are amazing in expressing the beauty in sadness. Perdition City is very different, but it's great as well. I don't care for their early Black Metal albums though. Definitely a band worth checking out.

I am going to have to say that Ulver is one of the best collective bands I have heard in a long time...I've liked them for well over a year now, but I am just finally beginning to "love" them...and I have to say that ALL of their albums, at least to me, are awesome, melancholic, and haunting in a way that only one other band has managed to be to me (Kayo Dot on "Chiors of the Eye") and I just thought it'd be nice to recognize them here in this unfortunately short () appreciation thread.
Long live Ulver!

Love 'em, have for quite some time. Shadows of the Sun was one of the my most anticipated albums from last year, though it definitely be a slow burner. Hated it upon first listen, then took quite some time fully get into it. A subtle album that plays on the emotions more with each listen. Probably my favourite proggy album release last year.

I like it lots.
I just finished listening to A"Lyckantropen Themes" and I liked it a lot.
I love ambient music, and I think this album is great; the dark ambient style used almost throughout really suited my tastes, and truthfully I like it more than a bit of their studio work.

Not many people could get easily into the meaning of their music. I don't believe that bands such as Sigur Ros etc have too many in common with Ulver.
For me, starting from the extreme genre, has given them this uniqueness. I still find them 'extreme' in a way. All their albums are worth checking, but I personally love Themes... Having read the book, it sounds as the perfect soundtrack.
Arcturus is my recommendation for people who like Ulver very much.

I also got into Ulver because I was trying metal at the time. I turned out not to like much metal, but Ulver's later works have stuck with me. I hate Arcturus. ;P
It seems that I like the "song-ish" albums, most - I've kept hold of Blood Inside, Perdition City and Themes from William Blake. The ambient stuff affects me far less, and besides, when Ulver write songs they don't sound much like anyone else's so they seem far more interesting.

I watched a couple of YouTube clips by this band, after having read about them on some other music forum, and got really curious, so about two weeks ago I went to the Ulver section in my local record store and purchased Blood Inside. I initially wanted to get Perdition City but it wasn't available. Blood Inside has proven to be a great introduction, though, what a gripping record it is! Listening to it right now, as a matter of fact... Need to buy Perdition City online sometime soon.

In my experience recommending Ulver, all of my friends seem to prefer Kveldssanger and Perdition City to Blood Inside at first, but who knows.

It is very worth it. If you come between a choice as for which to get first, definitely go with "Blood Inside".
At least, that's my recommendation...because it's better (although not better received, so you may or may not want to take this advice to heart).

I've had Blood Inside for, what, a couple of weeks now, and I love it! I went to the Rate Your Music side at first, to get an idea how the band's discography was rated, and was surprised to see BI being rated fairly low in comparison to some of their other records. The reason I say this is because the two songs I listened on YouTube were both from BI and I thought it was compelling stuff. I'm glad I got the record, after all, because each listening experience so far has revealed more things to love

eh, moe_blunts was kinda being rude i suppose...but not really when you think about it.
it's just that most people (including myself) consider Nattens to be fairly weak--even compared to other black metal. I certainly agree, as there are a whole plethora of albums that surpass it--including basically anything by Enslaved, Negură Bunget, Agalloch, Wolves in the Throne Room, and even Ulver's own "Bergtatt"...
But, art is subjective, so I'm glad at least someone liked it! And I don't think it's awful, just rather subpar.
But yeah, that's what the slightly inconsiderate "lol........." was all about I believe...and I sort of agree with it, because calling anything "the greatest ______________ of all time" can be rather silly, and I say this from experience.
Oftentimes I used to do things like that, and then I'd go and change my mind like a month later, and remember something I'd said, and have to explain to everyone that I've changed my mind.
This is mostly in real life situations, but hell, if you look at my post history you'll see loads of silly contradictions

I suppose there's definitely more than two 'fans' of Ulver onboard
I really like Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Blood Inside myself
I've only recently first heard Perdition City and Shadows of the Sun, really liked the first one, but like their last one less

Has anyone heard My Own Wolf? It's a free Ulver tribute album. You can download it here: http://panacea.msk.su/ulver/1/download.html - http://panacea.msk.su/ulver/1/download.html
Interesting takes on Ulver's work.

havnt heard the tribute but ULVER is quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. i absolutley LOVE perdition city and Shadows of the Sun (still havent listened to Blood Inside through yet but i like it a lot so far) and while their black metal albums aren't up to par with the rest of their work, it is certainly good and interesting take on the genre.

"We now look much forward to locking ourselves up in the studio and not having to worry about anything else. A new opus magnum/minimum. Please be patient."
From Ulvers Myspace.
If this werent one of the greatest bands on the planet, I would post this, but it's Ulver, and they need some recognition, and this thread needs to be bumped anyways!

Yay a bump for a band I really need to listen to soon...
I go through seasonal music phases, and Ulver is definitely my winter band...so they're not getting a lot of love right now...
I need to give them some soon. This thread reminded me.

I love, nay I WORSHIP all things ULVER! I have all of their discs, and I even have a limited edition tshirt with alternate SOTS art, a limited numbered/signed poster with shadows of the sun alternate art (which is now framed in my apt.).....I was unwilling to spring for the flask however.
I also wrote a review for Shadows Of The Sun on this site..... http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=153081 - http://www.progarchives.com/Review.asp?id=153081
I also love all of their output from their black metal beginnings to the glitch, experimental, and the drone, and everything in between. I think they owe a substantial part of their career and explorations to the maverick experimental band COIL.....but they do not necessarily rip them off. Coil is another great band to investigate in the electronica/ambient/experimental arena of dark music. Love Coil also.
either way, Ulver is unique enough that they have found their own voice, and it is fronted by the wonderful and angelic Garm......
