They need the kids to work, you forget that they have to do physical labor and need children to support them when they get old because they dont have any Social Security.

And a lot of them don't have the kind of access developed countries to birth control products as well as education about that kind of stuff.

And 1800 already took care of that...

I'm interested to know where they got those numbers and averages and stuff- the data to back up the clock.

Not to mention the changes in these back up date - in 10 years these will have change significantly for many reasons, including the way they influence each other.
Still - scary...

Oh yeah. Even if there is some sort of agenda behind it, it's still pretty creepy to at least see some sort of representation of all the crap, if you know what I mean.

It's all just evolution.  In the history of the Earth very few dominant species stay dominant for long.  We've achieved a lot but you can be sure that we'll achieve our own demise one day.  Also don't be too upset about the number of species becoming extinct; it's nothing compared to the number that came and went before the time of homo sapiens and it's certain that more new species will evolve after we're gone.  It's very easy to sit in our comfy arm chairs, in our centrally heated houses, watching our flat screen televisions and blame big business and profiteering for the state of the planet; forgetting that it's our consumerism that makes it that way.  But of course it's not us personally, it's everybody else.

I have a slight problem with the subject of conservation.  It's equally as arrogant and interfering to try to save species and preserve habitats as it is to deliberately destroy them.  Who says that we should have the right to decide which creatures to favour and which to disregard.  Man is currently on this planet and whatever the consequences of our actions are they are simply part of this planet's evolutionary path.

Maybe being the dominant species entails some responsibility?Wink...not to mention that survival of the human race rests upon our ability to preserve the only home we have.  I refuse to accept that the well-intentioned souls who battle to save our beautiful planet (or once beautiful?) are as arrogant as the self-serving profiteers who rape the land in the name of fortune....and yet there are many who just don't care.  Ask for a small sacrifice:  now that's just absolutely crossing the line.
Sure, apathy is a fine attitude...look where it's taken us so farOuch

Indeed - to carry the 'clock' analogy forward, if this planet's history to date were to span a single year, humanity (that is to say homo sapiens) only appears in the last second of 31st December; we're just another species that's come along and which will eventually disappear leaving only fossils, a billion tons of plastic bags and The Rolling Stones, who will probably still be touring come Judgement Day.

I agree that wanton destruction and waste is irresponsible and no good for us let alone any other species.  However I return to my previous argument; who decides what is responsible?  Humans basically follow their nature and do what they do.  We can try to alter behaviour patterns but that only causes other problems.  A fox that gets into a hen run will kill every hen but only eat one.  That's not very responsible (or good for their continuing food supply) either but it's what foxes tend to do.  We, as a species have a habit of blaming all the planet's problems on ourselves and then setting out trying to solve them, causing more problems in the process.

I tend to think that if everyone concentrated on getting their own life in order and stopped worrying about everyone else's then the world might be a better place.Wink

Food for thought but the whole idea of the clock just depresses me.  I know the world is in the crapper, but having to look at it like this is not a pleasing idea.

This sort of confirms a fact I heard a while ago that there are more people alive today than have died - EVER!!

That's a bit of an Urban Myth, the best estimate is that slightly over 106 billion people had ever been born - or the dead outnumber the living by a factor of 16.

What?

I heard a fact (?) that from the beginning of the human kind (sapiens) to day approximately 30 000 000 000 lived and died.

you know...I actually tend to agree with this (okay I came off a bit harsh before...sorry, it's just that I had been forced to watch so much anti-environmentalist crap that particular day that I snapped; you know Limbaugh, Stossel, and their ilk)

Anyway, I'm not sure if a human is comparable to a fox in that human's have far superior reasoning capabilities; we tend to know what is beneficial to our survival whereas a fox relies mostly on inborn responses: instinct.  The one thing I strongly disagree with is the sentiment that we cause more problems in trying to fix what has already gone awry...things like recycling, carbon restrictions, research on alternative fuel, etc....I don't see how it has caused larger problems aside from greedy opportunists (ahem...Al Gore...) which is a sideaffect of almost any sort of movement.

The bottom line is, I think human's are a bit more intelligent than you give us credit for.  If we have the potential to destroy (and we ARE likely responsible in large part...our factories and pillaging of forests and habitats, etc.) then we have potential to restore, or at least do the very best we can.  Anyone can do little things without sacrificing freedom and still help get on the right track, even if it's as little as picking up stray trash or using a bike instead of a car every once in a while.

ClapClapClapClap  we wouldn't have these problems in the first place.

1 Chronicles 13:7-9

Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.

Hehehe, the internet is a source for all kinds of useful information--it's a shame so much of it is false. ;-)
