I have to say, posting here I feel like I could say so much, but my emphasis has been on the "pure" Symphonic Prog, not the Italian subgenre. For all I know, though, "Per Un Amico", "Collage", and "Felona e Sorona" are beautiful albums. Italy has quite a bit of spunk to it, as I can hear perfectly from this emotional and very visual music. I have heard other clips from Le Orme, PFM, and Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso.... it is all so imaginative and at times fairy-tale in proportions.

here's a couple of clappies...Clap  I found a PFM sample here about some time ago before I even joined the forum, back when you could download them Thumbs%20UpLOL, actually well before I joined the site.  A couple of years later, music-wise, I eat drink and breath the stuff. There is SO much variety within the Italian prog, it simply has never gotten stale.  Exploring the avant works of Franco Battiato right now. Picked up a couple more last night as a matter of fact. Fascinating artist.

picked up two more Battiato albums last night.

Melle le 'gladiator' and L'era del cinghiale bianco

only need a couple more to complete his 70's albums.   quite a prolific artist.  Even his later pop-prog stuff sounds interesting, though I think I'll stop for now with the avant 70's stuff. There are other albums to get you know LOL

hhmmm, Battiato. Mandy has recently bought his last album Il Vuoto (2007). I thought it would have been a return to his archaic electronic/prog vein but Mandy said me it continues the formula of the recent releases.

Apologies if it has already been mentioned in here before. I bought this a couple of months ago and would welcome your opinions on it.
 
The packaging is nice but a bit flimsy and the cd selection wanders too much towards blues rock for my liking but the book is terrific. Thanks for the great thread guys! Costing me a fortune!

I had my hands on that but found a better one, for me at least, called 'The Return of Italian Pop' with tons of obscure stuff, interviews (9) with assorted groups, and lots of background information. Nice to find another independent source that confirms what we are doing here.  Think there are some groups in it we don't have here yet... but haven't crossreferenced the book vs. our site yet.

Le Orme concert in Padova (Padua) March, 29th 2007. This is my impressions:

" Giuseppe "Michi" Dei Rossi it doesn't seem has 60 years old because it steps on like one of 20 years old!!! And Michele Bon in "Blue Rondò A La Turk" (single of first formation but published in 1973) surclassed Keith Emerson that he recorded this song with The Nice.
For me they have gone beyond what I expected (also for Andrea Cortese).

And you are played all of my preferred songs...: "Felona E Sorona" (summary), "Figure Di Cartone", "Gioco Di Bimba", "Cemento Armato", "Sguardo Verso Il Cielo", "Blue Rondò A La Turk", "Contrappunti", "Amico Di Ieri", one summary of "L'Infinito" and one summary of the beautiful "Il Fiume". In general they played like they had 20 years oldand not 60 years old!!! (Specially "Michi" Dei Rossi that he is a very animal but capable of to treat its car from war with the velves gloves!!! And Michi's solo is the best drum solo that I've listen in my life!!!). And Aldo Tagliapietra it is still in a position to using the voice like in the 70's."

The book is little good for an Introduction on RPI. But I prefer:

This is the sole album by Il Mucchio, 5 piece band from Venice. The songs are written by Pino Donaggio, in those years famous Italian Song songwriter and today proprietor of a musical publisher label. The style is a simple Proto Prog/ Psychedelic Rock with Symphonic arrengements (very heavy but also very light) and this "Il Mucchio" is one of first examples of Italian Prog. This is a concept on the psyche of the man of 2000 but today it plays very twisted (in the exposition of the ideas) because this concept was composed in a different period like ideology (post '68). In every case the music is very good. The music, in fact, is very dramatic, Psychedelic and powerfull. In this sense the ogan is used for to increase the components that they form the concept creating a really enormous thickness. In this sense if the organ was substitute from the guitar I have idea that the music has been a lot near the style of the song songwriter. The musical preparation of the musicians and the superior writing (and the not banal and suggestive lyrics) they do the remainder. I do not believe that to cite a song with respect to another one have sense because are all on the same plan. Rather how much I have written it is more than just for to understand this forgotten jewelry.

This is one of the more forgotten albums of the RPI. And for me it isn't a good thing. Since the quality is extreme high, "Il Mucchio" has to be in every serious and complete discography.
