If it the Progressive Rock product in Italy pleases yourselves (whatever it is the genre) be able to contribute this thread. It will not be deepend only the knowledge of the Italy Symphonic Prog, but All the Prog produced in Italy.

P.s.: I do not know well the contemporary Italian Prog Rock because the shops of my zone do not trat it (except Prog Metal). Nevartheless for how much it pertains the 70's I am able to know enough to be able to advise something.

Why, however, to treat the Italian Prog Rock in All genre? Because it is Italian opinion of a lot of Proghead (above all of old Italian Progheads) that does not exist the Italian Symphonic Prog or the Italian Art Rock or, still, the Italian Folk Prog, etc... But only the Italian Prog (Rock)!!!

It would be interesting to do a list of all the classic italian bands from the seventies that are not in the italian symphonic prog section.

I think that many of these bands are often forgotten or, unjustly underrated by the thousands of users of this site.

Eh, eh... Who use the diplomacy and who no!!!

However I found "CONTAMINAZIONE di alcune idee di certi preludi e fughe de 'Il Clavicembalo ben temprato' di J. S. Bach- IL ROVESCIO DELLA MEDAGLIA" (Rovescio della Medaglia) suprior to "Concerto Grosso Per I New Trolls" (New Trolls), dear Andrea Cortese.

My love to Italian Prog began this spring.I've heard LOCANA DELLE FATE's Forse le Lucciole... and was blown away completely. My favourite without a shade of doubt.

BTW, in last few days I started to re-listen to some Italian albums...BANCO has almost flawless ones - debut, Io Sono Nato Libero and Canto di Primavera are my faves from them.LE ORME have my second fave Italian Prog album ever - L'INFINITO. Except everyone's faves like Felona E Sorona or Uomo di Pezza they also have excellent PICCOLA RAPSODIA DELL'APE - tiny acousitc piece with almost BEATLES-like melodic feeling...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! PFM are great with their first two masterpieces, but the further I go,the lesser I like.

It would be a crime not to mention such great albums as I Giganti's TERRA IN BOCCA, Celeste's PRINCIPE DI GIORNO, MEtamorfosi's INFERNO, RDM's Contaminazione, Maxophone's and Murple's efforts,QVL's both albums, Semiramis' DEDICATO A FRAZZ, New Trolls' Concertos ... and Modern Heroes - LA MASCHERA DI CERA and NODO GORDIANO along with NUOVA ERA and CASTELLO DI ATLANTE.

There's also a bunch of rare bands like Il Giro Strano, Eneide,Apoteosi,I Dalton,I Nomadi,Alphataurus,Biglietto per Inferno, Osanna, Buon Vecchio Charlie, Cervello etc - not to be missed by collectors!!!

I've heard a lot of Italian Prog, from the famous to the obscure, and to me there is no doubt that Le Orme is the very best of the lot. They've made a lot of beautiful music.

Second would be Osanna.

The Celeste album is also one of my top Italian records, as is the first Reale Accademia di Musica album.

Battiato and Claudio Rocchi are the best of the solo artists, I think.

The worst Italian stuff I've heard would have to be Jacula/Antonius Rex...I really don't understand what that guy was trying to accomplish.

ItalProg was the deepest scene in the 70s, as far as quality goes. It's amazing that a country with such a small population could churn out so many great bands.

For ANDREW: Best your lists and I believe that should be held in big consideration from the team of Italian Prog (test to write to Andrea Cortese). As for BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE is the continuation of the GARYBALDI to them time continuation of the GLEEMEN.

If FLEA ON THE HONEY/ FLEA/ ETNA a sole band are considered then here there is an even more important mistake because the previous case is a mistake!!! (FLEA ON THE HONEY/ FLEA/ ETNA are not considered really a one band if it wanted component a biography in historical sense, while the case of GLEEMEN/ GARYBALDI/ BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE)

For Andrea Cortese and Italian Prog Team: I can lend the CD of the CRYSTALS to Andrea Cortese for an attentive listening (enough to put itself all right how to do to exchange us it it). I had sent an e-mail time does to urge their inclusion means the address mailto:[email protected] - [email protected] but to all today not still I saw their inclusion.

For greatet info, meanwhile experienced to visit the following site: http://www.italianprog.com/it/a_crystals.htm - www.italianprog.com/it/a_crystals.htm (in Italian) or http://www.italianprog.com/a_crystals.htm - www.italianprog.com/a_crystals.htm (in English)

GLEEMEN and GARYBALDI have the same line-up:

- Bambi Fossati: guitars, vocals
- Lio Marchi: keyboards
- Maurizio Cassinelli: drums, vocals
- Angelo Traverso: bass

BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE has a differnt line-up:

- Bambi Fossati: guitar, vocals
- Maurizio Cassinelli: drums
- Ramasandiran Somusundaram: percussions
- Roberto Ricci: bass

FLEA ON THE HONEY changed his name into FLEA in 1972 and then into ETNA in 1975 but keeping the same line-up:

- Antonio "Tony" Marangolo: vocals, flute, harmonica, keyboards
- Agostino "Dustin" Marangolo: drums, guitar
- Carlo "Charlie" Pennisi: guitar, mandolin, vocals
- Elio "Nigel" Volpini: bass, sax, guitar

For Andrew: Ok, but for like I see it have both you reason. I do not want to do controversal and certainly it depends from the point of view. However it is true that BAMBIBANDA E MELODIE is the continuation of the GARYBALDI and it their not inclusion in http://www.progarchives.com - www.progarchives.com is serious!!!

PERIGEO/ PERIGEO SPECIAL/ NEW PERIGEO recommendations

I wanted to carry your caution a very important group for the Italian scene of the 70's. Are you are PERIGEO. Are you played very varied Jazz that had big parts of sax and guitar. Their pieces were Free/ Swing jazz Rock but their evolution, dictated from Giovanni Tommaso, they greater author, verse moments carried them where shine through a fusion between Funky and Jazz (you see above all the double concet album "Alice" by name PERIGEO SPECIAL).

The discs that I advise are:

1) AZIMUT (1972): 4 stars
2) ABBIAMO TUTTI UN BLUES DA PIANGERE (1973): 5 stars
3) GENEALOGIA (1974): 4 stars
4) La Valle Dei Templi (1975): 4 stars
5) ALICE (1980/ with the name PERIGEO SPECIAL): I have the five track "Alice Q-disc" and I rather this 4 stars
6) I Grandi Del Rock (1993/ compilation): 4 stars

Well, Perigeo are an excellent jazz-rock band, one of the big three in Italy along with Area and Arti e Mestieri (as for stmphonic we have respectively Le Orme, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, PFM).

Their "Abbiamo Tutti un Blues da Piangere" is considered the most classic contribution from their repertoire and is very good.

Excellent recommendations. It experiences however also: DELIRIUM (the first three), FORMULA 3 (the more Prog: "Dies Irae" and "Sognando E Risognando"). PERIGEO (looks the post of the Perigeo in this thread) and the AREA (the first 6), just to begin.

Well, I like Piccola Rapsodia dell'Ape of Le Orme. It's not at the same level of the previous Florian, 'cause it shows the band moving rapidly to pop music...classic instrumentation and playing is still fine, though, so the album becomes a worth buying for any good Le Orme's fan.

Excellent recommendations, by the way!Clap

Common problem also to:

- New Trolls: After "Concerto Grosso n° 2" produce only POP album.

- Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso: Shortered the  name in Banco produced POP album and only in the 90's are returned to produced Prog music.

- Area: After the death of Demetrio Stratos are passed to produce an album Jazz ("Tic & Tac", moreover very good).

I had way to gain both the album of the DALTON ("Riflessioni: Idea D'Infinito" 1973 CD by Btf/ Vinyl Magic [VM CD 012] and "Argitari" 1975 CD by Giallo Records [SAF 032]). I have to sire that itself if yourselves like the Jethro Tull this group is very indicating.

I did not understood because it does not be included in ProgArchives because it is really worthy of careful promotion seen the high standard of their music, risen of Symphonic Folk Prog.

Il 'Reale Impero Britannico' is in fact a 'Goblin' one off side project created for a soundtrack ( for contractual reasons they couldn't use the name 'Goblin') 'Goblin' recorded the whole soundtrack, but only have of the compostions( the better ones)  are actually from the band mainly by keyboarder Simonetti. The overall athmosphere is seventies soul funk with prog keyboard lines on top. Not a major 'Goblin' record but a good listen with some nice melodies and solos (BTW to be added in the 'Goblin' discography)

PERIGEO/ PERIGEO SPECIAL/ NEW PERIGEO story:

Perigeo/ Perigeo Special:
Tony Sidney (guitar)
Franco D'Andrea (keiboards)
Claudio Fasoli (sax)
Giovanni Tommaso (bass, contrabass and voice)
Bruno Biriaco (drums, percussions)

New Perigeo:
Maurizio Giammarco (sax)
Danilo Rea (keyboards)
Carlo Pennisi (guitars)
Giovanni Tommaso (bass)
Agostino Marangolo (drums)

The PERIGEO were one of the groups more popular in Italy in the 70's. Their genre was substantially a Jazz with Free parts (in the intro of the songs) with Swing song (but with much Rock guitars and sax) or, still, Funky Jazz (above all in the album "Alice"). Nevertheless never they were a Prog band if not for historical period of production.

The group is formed in Rome in 1971 and had immediately a contract with RCA Italiana and has published the album "Azimut" (1972) and of continue (in the pauses of intense live activity the besides Italian POP festivals and tournèe in France and England) "Abbiamo Tutti Un Blues Da Piangere" (1973), "Genealogia" (1974), "La Valle Dei Templi" (1975) and "Non è Poi Così Lontano" (1976), all characterized from warm and very Italian mentality (although Tony Sidney is American).

After 4 years of silence, thanks to a project ordered from RCA Italiana to Giovanni Tommaso (the writer of the greater part of the songs) the same Giovanni Tommaso recalls the od companions and reform the Perigeo. To celebrate the feeling found in rapid manner and the magical manners he remames the band PERIGEO SPECIAL. With the help of a lot of hosts it the good double concept album "Alice" (based on the story of Lewis Carroll) is born.

"Effetto Amore" of 1981 is a marginal album with a new formation including Carlo Pennisi and Agostino Marangolo from Flea and Goblin and Maurizio Giammarco from Blue Morning and Canzoniere del Lazio.

Personally I advice the first 4 albums and "Alice".

CRYSTALS story

Carlo Degani: Lead Vocals, percussions
Giorgio Piazza: Bass Guitar (ex PFM)
Giorgio Santandrea: drums, percussions (ex Alphatarus)
Marcello Todaro: acoustic and electric guitars (ex Banco del Mutuo Soccorso)
Nanni Citivenga: guitars (ex Raccomandata Ricevuta Di Ritorno and samadhi)

Paolo Tofani (Area and Electric Frankenstein): composer

With a formation so it is weird that the CRYSTALS lasted so little. Besides awn a mystery because the Cramps record have not ever published their disc (appeared for the first time in 1992 for Mellow Records). In truth the album is little Italian, resembling more to the Led Zeppelin and certains English groups than not to the classic Italian Prog. It is not original like music because "Time Out" is 100% Led Zeppelin (arrengements and sound) and "Policeman" is a lot of Folk but still too Led Zeppelin.

The album, sung in English, is an interesting document for what would have been able to become a really interesting and important group for the Italian scene.

Discography:

1992: Crystals (recorded 1974) by Mellow Records MMP120

2003: Crystals (recorded 1974) by  Akarma AK 1040 (with different gatefold sleeve cover)

excellent work, AndreaClap. Once you will finish the web site list, then you should re-group all in an unique big list an fix it at the first page of this thread.

By the way, whattapity! Posidonian Fields is still not available here so I had to check for some other items...Cry

btw I've bought two more albums from the huge italian prog scene: Tongue

1- First a precious obscure gem by a famous pop italian singer songwriter: Riccardo Cocciante! Few people know his 1972 debut album is an excellent symphonic prog record. By the many guest musicians a certain Paolo Rustichelli!!!!Big smile The album is a concept titled MU. Even if this is not listed in our venerable archives (the only prog album in a long pop career) it is nevertheless an excellent addition for any good symphomaniac!!! I hope to post soon a review on the forum of this album!Clap

2 - I also bought Finisterre's 1999 album In Ogni Luogo!Wink A lucky day. Hope to buy Posidonian Fields very soon, though...

It it discussed alone and exclusively of its work of painter. Nevertheless I believe that always it sends off a mail for info also its activity of singer. You will discover a figurative painter in the better tradition (its Still-life are very attractive).

FIABA — Il Cappello a tre Punte
Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=7121 - MANDRAKEROOT (Andrea Salvador)

5 stars FOLK METAL IS HERE

I do not know because but the Folk Metal is not easy genre to make to understand the people. Besides these Fiaba (from Syracuse, Sicily) propose a version totally Prog of this genre. The most large difficulty is represented from the vocal style and from the same lyrics, difficult to include for who is not Italian. In fact Giuseppe Brancato blends Renato Zero, Tito Schipa Jr., Ronnie James Dio, Robert Plant and Michael Kiske creating a style very recited, being able and in the same time very cheerful. Difficult for who it is not Italian or Classic Metaller understand this proposal that, I repeat, is Folk Metal a lot of Prog. Besides, being you are Sicilan propose a small expedient to be original. That is to say they introduce in their music high elements of true Sicilian theatre, that of "Pupi Siciliani". To advise a song with respect to another one is much difficult. It is not easy. I would experience to advise "La Profezia", Folk Prog Metal with text to the Black sabbath, Medieval atmosphere and endured and dramatic interpretation. Attractive also "Turpino, Il Mostro", "Il Cappello A Tre Punte", "Hanno Ammazzato Il Drago", the dramatic (exciting, warm, honest, sarcastic,...) "I Cento Stivali",it dramatically cheerful "La Rana Affogata (Morte Di Ranerò)" and the dramatic but comical reading of the modern society "Il Passo Della Gallina".

Summarized: If you are Italian and loved the Italian Prog the Fiaba cannot be lacking in your discography. If fond Halloween, King Diamond and death SS not to possess the Fiaba is punishable offense with the trouble of death. Certainly the Fiaba is a group that unites the classic Italian Prog and them the tendences in Classic Metal field. One of the little Folk Metal groups that I advise to all... But provided that it understand the Italian language and the Sicilian mentality.

For always yours, Mandrakeroot.

Interesting profile on Fiaba. In a cd shop in Vicenza I also saw their last album I Racconti del Giullare Cantore. It was two months ago and I didn't buy it due - mainly - to the price (over 24 euros!!!!!)...

BTW, I've listened to Aria Palea's Zoicekardìa more times and I have to say it's an excellent album in the vein of the early Jethro Tull (Stand Up basically, A New Day Yesterday in particular). There's also a great theatrical approach of the singer, especially in the opening track which is somehow burlesque!

Over all, good musicianship and a great flute playing!Clap

IMAGIN'ARIA — In un Altro Quandro

Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=7121 - MANDRAKEROOT (Andrea Salvador)

3 stars IN UN ALTRO QUADRO: IMAGIN'ARIA

Sincerely I should admit that this album did not impress myself how I hoped. Nevertheless worthy of more continue.

To musical level it is necessary to confront everything in global key. Interesting musically but with instrumental parts to stroked forces "In Un Altro Quadro" it presents a singer that does not hit. In this sense, for the genre of music produced, a more aggressive singer was asked for, more to the Peter Hammill. Nevertheless the Symphonic inserts (more for instruments that for score) are the better part of an album that recalls them, unfortunately, to big voice. The largest lack? Surely the recited in opening of "Arte O Artificio" to work of Barbara Visentini that is useless.

Summarized: Nevertheless "In Un Altro Quadro" it is an album quite to the meda. If not other because done with passion in a nation that it given a lot to the Prog and that will give a still in the years to come.

For always yours, Mandrakeroot.

ARPIA — Liberazione

Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=7121 - MANDRAKEROOT (Andrea Salvador)

4 stars ITALY IS A REPUBBLIC BASED ON... (extract frim 1st art. of Italian Constitution)

Historical band of the Roman underground the Arpia decide to build a concept on the story of the Italian Republic taking like chapters black mysteries of Italian history. So Bonetti, Brait and Orazi decide to build a non-politic reading of the make disputed but doing to tell from a witness of the other political bank. So Benito Mussolini and Clara Petacci hung and exhibited to Loreto square in Rome come mocked from a Communist ("Piazzale Loreto) and the massacle of Della Loggia Square in brescia comes told from a Fascist girl (because to the period the politics in Italy was this!!!). And, still, the well-known (in Italy) Moro Abduction ("16 Marzo 1978") comes seen with the eyes of an old Communist, the Massacre of Bologna (Central Station, August 2nd 1980, 10:25 A.M.) ("Bologna") comes seen with the eyes of a family of immigrants in Belgium (but of right hand...) and the victory of polytical coalition of Center- Right hand in March 28th 1994 ("Coprofagia") from a neo BR (that it is wanted to admit or no is a militia of Communists). So doing "Liberazione" became a raw reflection on the Italian society of the last half Century without to be political. Musically it is very raw, dusk, not easy but very immediate music com a lot of synth (I I find it also cheerful) with excellent lyrics and a smaller production that excites the meaning of the work.

Summarized: Excellent music and excellent comcept. Even if it is not conventional Prog because stinks of New wave but is 100% very Prog. Surely the concept is brave and not easy to understand if do not is itself Italian or it is not known the Italian story. However at least so it knows a story. That of nation that claims a power that in the centuries, even though divided in regional nations, the Bel Paese still today.

For always yours, Mandrakeroot.

Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=4388 - Andrea Cortese (Andrea Cortese)
Collaborator Italian Prog Specialist

4 stars Of the many bands and projects where mr. Zuffanti is involved (La Maschera di Cera, Finisterre, Lazona, Merlin Opera Rock ...), Hostsonaten is the most warm, mellow, gentle and melodic one with hints of folk and celtic influence plus sparse touches of jazz. That “celtic-symphonic prog” (I don't know how to call it, otherwise) is what came out better from this recent work.

Springsong is the last studio album released by the band and is based upon a compelling symphonic structure (moog, pianos and mellotron, synth) driven by acoustic instruments as the 12 strings guitar, violin, saxophone, flute, delicate whistles and even bagpipes! Nine instrumental composition, with some sparkling variations and a unique recitative part in “She Sat Writing Letters on the Riverbank”. The general mood of the album is different from the usual italian contemporary prog scene. There is not the purpose to surprise the listener with pompous arrangements or with fast and unespected changes of tempo. The music'structure is somehow similar to the classic band Celeste and its warm and soft wonderful compositions.

The message is clear: to relax the tired symphomaniac and give him the opportunity to reflect on all of his sins, to look to the world through ancient and never-changing natural forces. It would be possible then, for the most lucky of us, to come closer to the mythic embrionic state. This is the difference from Celeste. The symphonic structure is the main vehicle to reach all this with the alliance of the natural themes upon which the concept is based on.

The final track “Toward the Sea” is the longer composition (about 13 minutes), divided in three parts (Blackmountains, 3rd Reprise and Springland). The album's manifesto, for sure. Excellent equilibrium from all the musicians. Stunning!

A wonderful musical experience, not everyone's cup of tea, but possibly one of the most important record of the last years. It would have been an appropriate addition to the Lord of the Rings' soundtrack... wonderful!

*****

State O' Mind, from san Michele Al Tagliamento (Venezia) were a very promising band. They produced a conventional Power Prog Metal but very interesting, based on very heavy guitars but sweets and on an attitude Prog a la Le Orme, even though with a lot of flus poured from the classic 80's Metal. Carlo Nadalin is really very capable guitaplayer but with the stupid religion (I do not know otherwise to define it) of to leave the band where plays to the moment of the engraving of the album (here this does carried to a sensational disbanded, but with the Raintime an album carved it). Excellent band, excellent demo (but painful mix, even if not to throw). Begin too Metal with "Back To Real Life", excellent Power Metal, even ordinary and little original. Follows "Five Kings" with an excellent vocal test of Ennio Ficiur. Surely "Five Kings" is an excellent Prog Metal a la Stratovarius, Fates Warning, Crimson Glory, Queensryche or Warlord (therefore a lot of 80's) with excellent insertions of acoustic guitar and wild rhytmic, reflective parts and Metal piques. "Madness" is very modern and does not hit immediately. It is necessary, in fact, to wait the refrain and the excellent solo guitar where it is returned to the most pure Prog Metal. And here "Madness" becomes diabolical. It closes this demo "Unnamed", also is written from bassplayer Iacopo gobbato and like to "Madness" like structure shows us the technical value of the band, from excellent drum, guitars and voice of Ennio Ficiur (that imitates well Midnight [Crimson Glory]). nevertheless "Unnamed" is superior, like writing, to "Madness".

Summarized:To the period the State O' Mind received a lot of esteem from the skilled printing. But, for varied motive, did not be able to collect how much point. I had also the luck of to listen to the live in a burning concert at Pubi Pub and i should say that had all the cards in rule to break through. Unfortunately to the destiny ot is not commanded...

THE WATCH — Vacuum

Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=7121 - MANDRAKEROOT (Andrea Salvador)

4 stars BETWEEN GABRIEL'S GENESIS AND FISH'S MARILLION

I love Gabriel's Genesis and Fish's Marillion. Therefore hook The Watch that is perfect mix between this two band. Of the Genesis took Gabriel (or from Marillion Fish...), from Genesis the atmospheres, from the Marillion the melodies. And here already I described the album!!! That Roberto Leoni is one of the more technical than drummer I listened to a detail becomes. Then, in order not to say that is a copy of the Genesis in "Shining Bald Heads" introduce in closing a rhythmic solo of keyboards pratically a la Moody Blues (but seem chance) is another detail. Perhaps thje larger lack they are the intro of the songs that send again too, in the attacks of the voice, to Fish and the symphonic part of "Out Of The Land" that, thanks to the voice, is 100% fish's Marillion. But also this is a detail. Said this seems a negative review. Fake nothing more! The The Watch is a lot more sincere of the Marillion with Fish because those imitated (well) while the The Watch come compelled from a singer that I did not understood is is Fish or Peter Gabriel succeeding to produce a music that it is not understood who of two groups cited desire to copy.

Summarized: A lot of groups copy. Some because lacking ideas, other because compelled, other, still, for tribute. In the The Watch is the case of to say that is a winning mix of these everything components. Honestly I find that they be also very personal because their rereading it is very personal and sincere. Certainly they did not be Italian the labels would have extended red carpets simply of to have their favors. But thanks to the Lizard and to the Pick Up is not you rhymed unknown. And if it do not know them and loved the Gabriel's Genesis and Fish's Marillion you should know that The Watch constitute the natural continue.

For always yours, Mandrakeroot.

HOSTSONATEN — Hostsonaten

Review by http://www.progarchives.com/Collaborators.asp?id=7121 - MANDRAKEROOT (Andrea Salvador)

5 stars HOSTSONATEN: A COLLECTION OF AUTUMNAL DANCES

Uhm... Attractive, weird simple and traditional album. However that difficult to put together four words for a review... Also because "Sinfonia Della Luna" is sacrificated to simple intro, "Remember You" (very best Medieval Symphonic Prog) comes after "Hostsonaten" becoming a replenished (sic...) and "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner" is weighing and calculated to surprise since the text is the homonymous poetry of Coleridge. So the review does not be able that to to be based on the long suite "Hostsonaten (42 mins!!!) that is a to succeed itself of Folk Prog, Symphonic Folk, Jazz Prog, POP and who more of it more put. In general it is a lot of Italian Symphonic Prog but has strong returns to the Caravan of "In The Land Of Grey And Pink", to the first PFM (I think about "Storia Di Un Minuto"), to the Moody Blues of "Days Of Future Passed", to the onnipresent Genesis, to the New Trolls of Searching For A Land", to the Delirium of "Dolce Acqua", to the Jethro Tull and to the solo career of Rick Wakeman. "Hostsonaten", thanks also to the sweet acoustic guitars, to the attractive sax, to the flute (fundamental element of Italian Symphonic Prog), to the mellotron and to the relaxed atmospheres seems to last little more of 20 mins!!! It does not surprise me that a musician like Ciro Perrino (ex Celeste, between the other) have had the courage of to publish an album like "Hostsonaten" and in general to support Fabio Zuffanti. That for shortsightedness (but I would say for the eyes covered of ham) of certainly discographycs is compelled to remain unknown to the masses!!!

Summarized: Long life to Fabio Zuffanti, artist that I put in the same plan of Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso, Le Orme, PFM and New Trolls in order to importance for the Rock Progressivo Italiano. And here I conclude because the words they are superfluous. Good listening!

For always yours, Mandrakeroot.

Unfortunately of the Blocco Mentale i haven't nothing. Is another group that I should investigate because is a group of which I have heard a big one well. Surely in January, when here at Pordenone (Italy) there will be the "Fair Of The Disc", I will try to do the mine. At the moment I am seeking Italian Prog Band done not include in PA and, just the team of the Italian Prog again operating, will be to signal for the Inclusion (means PM to the components of the team).

I have uncovered a very interesting band profit in 70's and from 90's in then. Be is called NUOVA COMPAGNIA DI CANTO POPOLARE ( http://www.nccp.it - www.nccp.it ). It produced a FOLK REVIVAL (of the Naples zone) in PROG key. Very interesting above all because the Italian Folk never enjoyed of the right exhibition and therefore bands like NUOVA COMPAGNIA DI CANTO POPOLARE and CANZONIERE DEL LAZIO go supported in order to unblock the situation!

Hey Signore Cortese, great Eloy`s review , as well as the Italian one...

Guys i finished a couple of reviews about Italian bands, Cincinnato which is a very unknown band that released only a self titled album in 1974, with jazz tendencies...and Edgar Allan Poe, also from 1974 with it`s Generazioni album, both albums are worth to listen, and you know, if you wish you can have a look to my reviews ...

4 stars Well, well, well. This a wonderful manifesto for the RPI team and a compilation that impressed me at the very first look to the (fabulous) track list!

No Banco, Le Orme or PFM here. And for this reason a must have for all who want to have a listen to the most obscure and unknown italian bands and artists of the seventies.

16 songs for 16 bands and artists covering the period 1971-1975, chronologically. There is not jazz rock here, neither RIO. Symphonic mainly with some classical inspired bands and sparse folk touches.

The cd opens with Osanna and their “Intruduzione”. Then Delirium with the memorable “Dolce Acqua” New Trolls with “1st Tempo – Allegro”.

From fourth song on, many surprises for the italian prog aficionados: Garybaldi and their first single “Marta Helmut”. Then Il Paese dei Balocchi, Gli Alluminogeni with the wonderful sixties-like-symphonic with great acoustic and electric guitars “Scolopendra”, the weird and exciting Raccomandata Ricevuta di Ritorno.

I Califfi with “Campane” (Bells) is one of the highest peaks of the compilation. I didn't heard that song before! Wonderful music with tons of keyboards, moog and synth withthe addition of bells and other spectacular colours. This is taken from “Fiore di Cemento”, the only prog record ever released by the band in a whole-pop career.

Triade, Ricordi d'Infanzia and Tito Schipa jr with an extract taken from his “Orfeo 9”, one of the first opera rock in Italy. Uno and Samadhi follow and then, Procession, Città Frontale and Bambibanda e Melodie, these last recently added to the site.

All in all, it's a hard work to describe every single track. The best thing to do is to recommend you to buy the compilation. An excellent one, this time, an useful one for sure!

Warning! The italian prog scene (classic from the seventies and modern) is way more big than what this compilation shows...

NUOVA COMPAGNIA DI CANTO POPOLARE story:

Fausta Vetere: voice, guitar, flute
Peppe Barra: voice, percussions
Giovanni Mauriello: voice percussions
Carlo D'Angiò: voice percussions (1972 out)
Patrizio Trampetti: voice, guitar, mandolin, percussions
Eugenio Bennato: voice, guitar, mandolin, accordion (1976 out)
Nunzio Areni: flute, guitar (from 1972)

Internet: http://www.nccp.it - www.nccp.it

Big group the NUOVA COMPAGNIA DI CANTO POPOLARE. Very important because the Folk music in Italy it is not very cautious and they happened it does news. At first they is not a lot of Prog, because Roberto De Simone (that in 1967 found them but never profitable component was) wanted to recover the traditional repertory of the zone of Naples of XVI and XVII Centuries. In 1971 arrived the contract with Raro and ublish their first Lp. Also the second is homonymous and sees Nunzio Arena entry the music is done more elaborated (even though continuous the Revival work of the previous album) and it is approached to the prog. the third album, double and live (homonymous...!!!) (for the EMI Italiana) is a success. But it is sensational the success of the successive album "Li Sarracini adorano Lu Sole" and from the extract single "Tamurriata Nera" (both 1974). This group continued the waves of Prog (and of everything the cultured music) for that is necessary orderly the 90's to find a their novelty disc ("Medina", 1992). Now their music are composed by the band members and is a lot more Prog. Or rather, finally it is really Naples Folk Prog.

Unfortunately my knowledge on the contemporary scene is limited from the fact that in my zone the record shop pratically do not treat the Prog (above all if Italian!!!). The sole record shop that discusses is it the Red Moon Records ( http://www.redmoonrecords.com - www.redmoonrecords.com ) that it is found to 1h 15'/30' from my house (but has only that of the 70's!) or the Pick Up Records ( http://www.pickuprecords.it - www.pickuprecords.it ) (where I go with Andrea Cortese) that it is found at 2h (in car) from my house and that has everything that serves. For so I am able only to say that for that little that I listened to (too little...) they are good products. But for the contemporary Rock Progressivo Italiano at the moment it experiences contact Andrea Cortese.

DALTON story

(from "Riflessioni: Idea D'Infinito" booklet; C 2000 BTF)

Line-Up:
Temistocle Reduzzi: piano, organ, mellotron, moog, synth, vocals (out 1975)
Aronne Cereda: acoustic and electric guitars, vocals
Rino Limonta: bass guitar, vocals
Tati locatelli: drums, vocals
Alex Chiesa: flute, vocals (from 1970)
Giancarlo Brambilla: organ, piano, moog, mellotron (in 1975)
Mauro Pagani: flute, vocals (late 60's- 1970)

Story:
Dalton started out as a beat group during the late 60's, reaching a good success with four singles with four singles of light POP music. The most interesting tracks were released in 1968: the instrumental "Il Giro" and "Era Qui (Just One More Change)", as well as the Italian rendition of "Venus", a classic hit by Shoking Blue. At time, Mauro Pagani was the flute player in Dalton's line-up. Intensively touring at the beginning of the 70's, Dalton performed at the Travagliato and Fiera Di Genova POP festivals, and came in second at the Cantagiro 1970 band competition. Pagani splits shortly after for PFM and was substituted by Aronne Cereda (ex Puritani).

Dalton's leader Temi Reduzzi organizes the comeback in 1973, for the recording sessions of "Riflessioni: Idea D'Infinito", with a completely new line-up and a dramatically different music style. The avantgarde music of "Riflessioni" is highlighted by the flute and the drums work and by inspired lyrics; it's a fine production where music is perfectly balanced with pauses, at a very high level too. Still in 1973 Dalton wins the gold prize at Zurich's POP festival.

1975 sees the released of two new Dalton albums: the first one, titled "Paciana Story" (attribuited at "Paciana Story". Proper discography [my note]) is a Rock Opera that was commissioned to Reduzzi and Cereda by a local Bergamo newspaper, with lyrics in Italian and in the local slang; the second one, titled "Argitari", is released after the substitution of Temi Reduzzi with the keyboards player Giancarlo Brambilla, and has only one track that reminds their avantgarde style.

Dalton breaks up in 1977, when cereda gives a try to a solo career by releasing "Vivo", arranged by Augusto Martelli on lyrics written by Sellery (who worked with Analogy). Cereda then kept playing live by performing Pablo Neruda's poetry. Gifted keyboards player Temistocle Reduzzi died some years ago. The vinyl LP of "Riflessioni: Idea D'Infinito" is nowadays one of the most rare collector's items of the whole Italian Progressive scene.

"Argitari": Folk Prog StarStarStarStar

Good call, Joolz!Clap

Well, La Torre dell'Alchimista eponimous album is excellent for sure. The sound is well balanced between a convincing 70s' symphonic sound and contemporary extended vintage-keyboards plus hints to Delirium in some parts (as in L'Apprendista) and plus some clear references to Nuova Era...

BTW, I always like flute so much...!

I still don't own Il Trono dei Ricordi neither of Montefeltro. From what I've listened, two classic of the contemporary italian scene. Unfortunately both the bands didn't manage to establish themselves as it also happened so often in the past.

How about Zappa and his Trasparenze? Did you like it?

Sure i liked it!
Is not as high as Celestion, but right now i would consider Trasparenze as the same level as Chatka, i also put it on the car stereo and my mom loved it ShockedTongue...
A few listens more, and i´ll review it for sure

Thanks!

I just saw the posts concerning NCCP. I used to love the band in the Seventies, and I saw them live on a couple of occasions - they were really great! Do you think we could suggest their addition to PA's database? I know that Italianprog.com lists them, even if they say they're not strictly prog. Perhaps we could submit them to Hugues's attention. I remember that some time ago Alucard opened a thread in the Non-Prog section, though I was the only one who posted there.

I KREL story

Franco Mussida: guitars
Flavio Premoli: keyboards, voice
Franz Di Cioccio: drum
Giorgio Piazza: bass

I krel were born simply change name at I Quelli. This band precedes the PFM. The name change was wanted simply to underline the passage from Beat production to the new production of what would have been renamed Prog. Nevertheless in the concerts they used still the name I Quelli. The blow of luck arrived in the 1970. I Krel- I quelli were appreciated sessionman for the Ricordi label. So when the label decided to throw the Equipe 84 was proposed to Franz Di Cioccio to unite itself to them. From excellent musician it is found catapultated to the Festival di Sanremo 1970. From 8 pm to 11 pm it is shown at Teatro Ariston. Then change of clothing an go to the "Wisky Club" incited its group (I Krel) that, for contract, should play only music in the new language of POP. In the same year they published their sole 7", first Prog production.

Nevertheless disagreements with the label carried Lucio Battisti, Mogol and alessandro Colombini to be based on the label Numero Uno. These disagreements and the meeting with Mauro Pagani (played with Dalton) carried I Krel- I Quelli cancel the contract with Ricordi Label and to sign with the Numero Uno. Chosen the new original name... They entered on the Prog history!

Discography:
"Fin Che Le Braccia Diventano Ali/ E Il Mondo Cade Giù" (7") Ricordi SRL 10573 (1970; Now added in PA in PFM's discography).

Naturally I am all right for their inclusion that it should be done as soon as possible. I do not say that, if you read the thread, I claim that State O' Mind come included... But together with the NCCP I press because they come added also Dalton and Crystals.
