I haven't heard Brain Salad Surgery. Should I feel guilty? If yes, why?

I really think Brain Salad Surgery is awful. And I don't know its good deep inside. I'm more scared I'd feel its even worse if I heard it again now, than when I gave it that two star rating.

Oh, here's my biggest  sin. Someone managed to talk me into joining them on Dream Theater concert once. (In my defense I hadn't really heard them yet). I can never forgive myself.

I have never got into King Crimson or ELP - a few select tracks for each, but beyond that they do little for me.
Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

I lost my vinyl collection a few years back. It was rather large, and contained original issues of Beatles albums, Yes, Rush, The Doors, Genesis, Donovan, Peter Gabriel, and many more.

Confession:
I hate King Crimson.
I hate Camel.
I hate the Beatles and Gentle Giant.
I basically hate all of the older Prog bands except for Rush and Pink Floyd.
I also have utter disdain for Radiohead and Spock's Beard. Ambient space rock pisses me off on a massive level.
I hate that 35745748 hour long Green Carnation song. It came on my Last.FM radio once and I banned it.

Also, when people on ProgArchives diss Tool or DT or sh*t I like, I get mad and call them old-prog-loving snobs.

Yeah, and I own every KoRn, Queens of the Stone Age, and System of a Down album. Very not-prog, but some of my favorite work.

I don't like "A trick of the tail" by Genesis, even though Genesis is one of my fav bands.

I have never heard to "Divine Wings of Tragedy" nor "Twilight in the Olympus" , I simple have no idea how they sound.
I hate Everon and Twelfth Night
I hate Octavarium above all things

I love Pink Floyd, I really do...

...but I think 'The Wall' is the main reason most people don't like prog; had it been the first prog album I'd heard, I would be going to Sugarbabes concerts nowadays; boring, self indulgent twaddle, and I also think Roger Waters is a git.

So, in conclusion...

+++deep breath+++

I AM A PROG FAN WHO HATES 'THE WALL'

That's better...

mind you, I enjoyed it when I saw them perform it in 1980 at Earls Court...

Hey sweet sixteen. I wouldn't be surprised if what you think of as your prog sins will change quite a bit over the next couple of years.

With the big wall on stage?

I like the Wall but it is self-indulgent twaddle.. I think I dig what the Wall is as a work of modern rock more than the actual music. It's like true musical theater at times.

I downloaded most of what I listen to, I've no problem being iconoclastic and dismissive of classics, nor other people's favourites and I think classic rock is stupid. also, I'm never even going to attempt to enjoy jazz fusion.
but I don't feel guilty about that.

what I do feel guilty about is that I look at the "Raga Rock" category on this site mostly every day and I've never even dipped my toes into the water.

Confess your Prog Sins!!!... I know that they are worst than mine.

I just bid on a very rare Marillion CD entitled Rochester on ebay. Only a handful of copies were made and sent out to those who contributed to the 'tour fund' on the This Strange Engine tour. How'm I going to explain to the wife that I've spent over a $100 on a disc, provided I win it. I'm having buyer's guilt already.

I love The Wall!

It does seem to divide Floyd fans, but it was a hugely successful album. I believe most Floyd fans are not prog fans, and dont actually recognise Floyd as prog rock. Thats how they still get away with being able to headline Live8 and such events. Floyd are the link between the prog world and the stadium rock world. The Wall is pretty self indulgent, but to be fair most of the worlds biggest bands - U2, Radiohead, Coldplay etc are self indulgent and pretentious.

I reckon people hate prog because they were told too in the late 70's by the music press, and the notion just stuck. Apart from Floyd, most people have probably never heard any prog rock.

..but yes, I agree Waters is a git!

Having heard only Quintessence - Quintessence from said genre... I must say that's no sin. Hoping to get some Shakti soon, however, to see if that remedies anything...

the usual...  my sins are well known to the forum at large since I believe in the notion of confessing my sins hahahhaah.

admins..forgive me for thinking that Genesis fans consistantly overrate the quality.. and most importantly the importance of their albums.

admins...forgive me for  thinking that  VDGG is 10% brilliance and 90% crap.. masterfully packaged in a dense forbidding format that leave many prog fans saying.. wow that was heavy.. I don't understand any of that.. it must be great LOL

admins....forgive me for thinking that Rush post Hemispheres is Prog Related at best and AOR at worst..and that there is a case, a strong one for moving the beloved Rush to Prog Related

there I feel better... my sins are purged.. now in grand tradition... working on some new sins to confess to later LOL

This is sad, but:

  • I consider post-Fish Marillion wimpy.
  • I dislike TMV.
  • All my KC was given to me, copied, by a friend.
  • (added w/ edit) I don't like Hackett's guitar tone prior to The Lamb and think it detracts from the music
  • I hate wind instruments in Prog
