Of the top 20 progrock studio albums (according to ratings on this site), I only listen to one regularly (JT's Thick as a Brick).

I don't like Genesis, I like some Yes but not too much, I don't like Pink Floyd, I listen to Kansas, and I do not like prog metal (its boring and repetitive.)

Oh and I'm not a musician. Maybe that explains all of the above. Unhappy

Let's see...

1. I don't like VdGG
2. I don't like Pink Floyd
3. I don't have any GG original album
4. I LOVE some poppish albums made by prog bands such as Peter Gabriel 'So', Yes '90125' and 'Big Generator' (in fact I have both on vynil), Genesis 'We Can't Dance', etc...
5. Once I had to sell part of my vynil colection... I loose albums like 'The Steve Howe Album', King Crimson 'Three of a Perfect Pair', Rick Wakeman 'White Rock', Yes 'Yessongs', Mike Oldfield 'Incantations'... (During those years I had buy most of them again, but is not the same)... SHAME ON ME!!!

That's what I remember right now...

(I'm such a sinner and I will burn in Prog Hell!)

I do though enjoy VDGG, but I do not like Yes, King Crimson, and a lot of other stuff that are important bands in prog. Confused

Kaz and Witchwood...who DO you like?

As for me...too many essential albums not enjoyed (Close, Pawn) or owed (Octopus, Tales). I could use some more Procol Harum, since I seem to be one of their key defenders (not that it comes up too much).

In my case, what many people would consider a 'prog sin' is my not liking Genesis' "Foxtrot" at all. Another one might be my dislike of Marillion's "Misplaced Childhood" - and, of course, at least to some forum members, the fact I've never, ever been able to get into Dream Theater, in spite of owning six albums by them.

I don't think the 'Canterbury Scene' should be a genre listed on this site.

I don't own a real copy of Opeth or 2 of the 4 King Crimson alubms I have.

I dislike Close to the Edge, its too boring for me. I don't listen to RPI as much as I should.

I listen to Rush too much (if that can be a sin - I'm stopping for a month or so until the new release anyways) and I don't own a real copy of most of the Rush albums I listen to (well I don't own a copy of 5 Rush albums - and those copies are all vinyls, I'm trying to get them all on CD)

So prog sins ended up just being a thread where people can say what they don't like?

After checking out maybe ten-fifteen neo-prog bands, I dismissed the whole genre. And it felt good.

Well, I think the point of the "sins" thread is that you feel guilty about it. You know, like the Catholic church! Hey Aqualung.

For example: "I've never been that fond of Yes. Sorry, but it's true. Even if I really liked the Yes Album, if it hadn't been my first buy, I might never have gotten a second."

My biggest prog sins?

1. I've got 4 Pink Floyd albums and I really can only listen to one. I've got them because they're Pink Floyd, but i can't stand the band nor the stuff they call music.

2. I recently dropped my Misplaced Childhood cd on the floor and absentmindedly rolled over it with my chair. I only noticed it when it cracked loudly. I hate myself for that, and for not owning the record anymore Accidents are not sins though, are they?

Oh I know. I just wanted an excuse to pull a shrug/smile/bash Close the Edge. And remind everyone about how much ELP rocks, and how I don't own Welcome Back My Friends/Tarkus/ELP yet. /Love Beach/Love Bach.

I have "lost" so many Tull covers in the same way. Minstrel, Songs from the Wood and Broadsword are all unattatched, and the Passion Play liner notes seem to have vanished from the face of the earth. Most distressing that.

Quite ridiculous thread, in my opinion. Why should anyone feel guilty for not having listened to a certain album or for not liking a certain band?

Because it's human nature to feel guilt, and because we all know that Brain Salad Surgery is a good album, even if we're scared to admit it. Deep inside. And did those feet.

Because the music didn't come from Cantabury England AND Brain Salad Surgery is hardly a bunch of BSS. It's really quite sexy. Unless you already hate ELP (or are just scared to admit you're in love with them), in which case, yeah, you probably won't like 'em at all. It hardly pisses ME off at least, at least, not until towards the end, but it's sorta redeemed, so it's all good. The first bits are mostly all great anyway.

HEY! ROCKTOPUS! THE "PROG SINS" THREAD HAS BECOME A "DEFEND THE PROG YOU DON'T HATE" THREAD!

@Whistler: I used to like ELP a lot after I first heard them. Then I got tired of them after a month or so, and the interest hasn't come back since. I never managed to get hold of BSS, and I doubt I will bother nowadays. And I don't feel guilty about it. I mean, why should I listen to music other people think I should listen to, and feel guilty if I don't? I like to listen to music I like.

I really think Brain Salad Surgery is awful. And I don't know its good deep inside. I'm more scared I'd feel its even worse if I heard it again now, than when I gave it that two star rating.

Oh, here's my biggest  sin. Someone managed to talk me into joining them on Dream Theater concert once. (In my defense I hadn't really heard them yet). I can never forgive myself.

Confession:
I hate King Crimson.
I hate Camel.
I hate the Beatles and Gentle Giant.
I basically hate all of the older Prog bands except for Rush and Pink Floyd.
I also have utter disdain for Radiohead and Spock's Beard. Ambient space rock pisses me off on a massive level.
I hate that 35745748 hour long Green Carnation song. It came on my Last.FM radio once and I banned it.

Also, when people on ProgArchives diss Tool or DT or sh*t I like, I get mad and call them old-prog-loving snobs.

Yeah, and I own every KoRn, Queens of the Stone Age, and System of a Down album. Very not-prog, but some of my favorite work.

I love Pink Floyd, I really do...

...but I think 'The Wall' is the main reason most people don't like prog; had it been the first prog album I'd heard, I would be going to Sugarbabes concerts nowadays; boring, self indulgent twaddle, and I also think Roger Waters is a git.

So, in conclusion...

+++deep breath+++

I AM A PROG FAN WHO HATES 'THE WALL'

That's better...

mind you, I enjoyed it when I saw them perform it in 1980 at Earls Court...

With the big wall on stage?

I like the Wall but it is self-indulgent twaddle.. I think I dig what the Wall is as a work of modern rock more than the actual music. It's like true musical theater at times.

I downloaded most of what I listen to, I've no problem being iconoclastic and dismissive of classics, nor other people's favourites and I think classic rock is stupid. also, I'm never even going to attempt to enjoy jazz fusion.
but I don't feel guilty about that.

what I do feel guilty about is that I look at the "Raga Rock" category on this site mostly every day and I've never even dipped my toes into the water.

I just bid on a very rare Marillion CD entitled Rochester on ebay. Only a handful of copies were made and sent out to those who contributed to the 'tour fund' on the This Strange Engine tour. I love The Wall!

It does seem to divide Floyd fans, but it was a hugely successful album. I believe most Floyd fans are not prog fans, and dont actually recognise Floyd as prog rock. Thats how they still get away with being able to headline Live8 and such events. Floyd are the link between the prog world and the stadium rock world. The Wall is pretty self indulgent, but to be fair most of the worlds biggest bands - U2, Radiohead, Coldplay etc are self indulgent and pretentious.

I reckon people hate prog because they were told too in the late 70's by the music press, and the notion just stuck. Apart from Floyd, most people have probably never heard any prog rock.

..but yes, I agree Waters is a git!

Having heard only Quintessence - Quintessence from said genre... I must say that's no sin. Hoping to get some Shakti soon, however, to see if that remedies anything...

the usual...  my sins are well known to the forum at large since I believe in the notion of confessing my sins hahahhaah.

admins..forgive me for thinking that Genesis fans consistantly overrate the quality.. and most importantly the importance of their albums.

admins...forgive me for  thinking that  VDGG is 10% brilliance and 90% crap.. masterfully packaged in a dense forbidding format that leave many prog fans saying.. wow that was heavy.. I don't understand any of that.. it must be great LOL

admins....forgive me for thinking that Rush post Hemispheres is Prog Related at best and AOR at worst..and that there is a case, a strong one for moving the beloved Rush to Prog Related

there I feel better... my sins are purged.. now in grand tradition... working on some new sins to confess to later LOL

This is sad, but:

  • I consider post-Fish Marillion wimpy.
  • I dislike TMV.
  • All my KC was given to me, copied, by a friend.
  • (added w/ edit) I don't like Hackett's guitar tone prior to The Lamb and think it detracts from the music
  • I hate wind instruments in Prog

Ok, truly truly.
I'm not a huge fan of Rush. Some of it I get, but mostly, ugh I doesn't hit me.
I'm in the process of developing my Genesis, Yes ear. I wasn't fond of them in my younger years, being heavily indulged in Floyd, Sabbath and Tull. But now they are growing on me.
Caravan. -LOVE the debut. Hit and miss with the rest. I sadly regret  the missing year (1969). It could've been a bit more "Caravan" and little less "If I Could..."
There, that is my sin.Evil%20Smile

Years ago I sold 2 LP's to a friend of mine.
When some time later I had second thoughts about selling them, I wasn't able to buy them back. And I never came across those albums anymore (LP or CD).

The first one was Mike Oldfield's "Collaborations" from his box-set "Boxed". IMO this album contains the best and most progressive guitar playing he ever did.

The other album was a Queen live bootleg from the pre-ANATO era called "Stunning". It had a very poor sound quality (illegal recording from the early 70's) but it contained 3 previously unreleased tracks. "See What A Fool I've Been" (yeah, right on the spot here! ), "Hangman" and a song whose title I've forgotten. "Hangman" was actually a very nice song.
I have been searching everywhere but I even couldn't find it in any collector's catalogue. I think it must be a real collector's item right now.

- I find most Italian symphonic prog tame and unoriginal.
- I find most post-rock predictable and unimaginative.
- I find most prog-metal a bit soulless, too technical, but mostly just silly..
- I find most modern symphonic prog too AOR-tinged and cheesy.
- I find most RIO/Avant-prog self-indulgent and needlessly complex.
- I find most Neo-prog corny and regressive.
- I find most krautrock interesting, but ultimately just unlistenable hippie drivel.

I better stop before I get my ass kicked... Embarrassed

I mean the album would still be crap, but at least it would have a point.
