I'll stand up for Works Vol 1! A pretty underrated album in my view and worth a four star average, not the three it gets on the PA ratings.

It was the first prog album I bought (followed by Trilogy and Close to the Edge) and I was knocked out by the range on offer  - classical, pop ballads, big band jazz and heavy rock all convincingly played.

I love the Piano Concerto which has some of Keith's best playing, smoky and jazzy one minute, wild and frenetic the next.

Greg's side is maybe the weakest but Lend Your Love, Cest La Vie and Hallowed be thy Name are all excellent.

I love some of the stuff on Carl's side especially Enemy God, LA Nights, Tank (which I prefer to the original version as it swings more) and Food for your Soul (what a drum break at the end!)

Side 4 - Pirates is always good fun to listen to and a real stirring epic. I know some people think Fanfare is too protracted and tedious but I've always liked it. Love the dirty R&B bass rhythm and Keith gets some great mean and distorted sounds on it.

Maybe people felt a bit cheated that it was really only 20 minutes of ELP and three solo sides, but I still feel it's a very good album.

I agree with you Drachen.

Something else: two days ago, I received by air mail, an autographed picture of Greg from his last tour; he signed it to my name, and with his best wishes. Greg made my day, my week and so on...  Big%20smile

Didn't like Pirates a lot at first, especially the production as the drums seem a bit lost in the mix. However it has matured like a fine wine to become one of ELPs classics!

Thanks Sylvie.
I like this thread, you can say positive things about ELP without getting shot down in flames!

I have Greg's DVD. I baught in on Amazone last year. It's a great DVD, and the show video is very well done.  His voice is quite clear and very nice on it.

The only problem; if you are not in Europe or in England, you have to transfert this DVD on an appropriate one if you want to listen to it on your TV, otherwise, you will have to listen to it on your labtop or computer if compatible. It was easy to transfert it on a new DVD.

I saw Greg Lake live with Gary Moore in Cardiffs Student Union Bar way back in.......a long time ago. I enjoted it but my friend was less than enthusiastic. For an encore he played "Love You Too Much" again. Which I didn't mind but my mate thought was too much.

I agree with you on this Snowdog; "Love you too much " is not really a good song. Greg has enough materials for playing and singing, so that he can easily past this one, and concentrate on other materials.

Around june or july 2005, on his webside, Greg asked us what songs that we would like him to play for his tour. At the end, I think that we had something like 125 songs titles to be choosen , from ELP , KC and solo materials.  Even Peter Sinfield participated in this trivia. We had a lot of fun doing this. Each participant could suggest 10 songs. Finally, on my suggestion, he sang "Foot Prints in the Snow". It's on the DVD.

He didn't have much material then Sylvie, this was the late '70's, but I enjoyed the gig. Wish I had seen ELP though. I think "Love You Too Much" was the single at the time, so maybe thats why he played it twice.

Has anyone ever noticed the connection between ELP's All I Need is You, and the closing number All I Need is You from U2's Rattle and Hum?

There is a different mix on the 'Return of The Manticore' box set.The drums are lifted a bit more. I still prefer the orginal version though.
