This is just a quick reminder that the Prog Related and Proto Prog categories on the site have their own definitions.
 
There is a tendency among some members to suggest that bands which have been rejected for addition to one of the Prog sub-genres are instead added to Prog Related or Proto Prog. These two categories (which are specifically for bands who are not prog) are not intended as fall back options for rejected bands.
 
Before proposing that a band is added to Prog Related or Proto Prog, please check that they appear to fit in with the definition of one of those categories. Note that in the case of Prog Related, those bands which are approved are most likely to be well known ones.

"Even though the music by these artists is sometimes unrelated it had things in common with prog music in that it was very structured and even adventurous, sometimes hard or heavy, sometimes mellow, strong melodies, good hooks are an integral part of most of the material. Sometimes these artists pioneered other rock genres.

Though most of these artist can't really be considered progressive themselves, their relation to progressive music is not to be underestimated."

I am flabbergasted that anyone would expend effort getting The Police added to a Prog Rock site....seriously there are lots of real Prog bands out there who need your support. Try searching "Myspace" for bands with the tag "prog" and see if anything worthwhile comes up. All these bands have music posted on their Myspace, so why not go and discover something worthwhile and worth championing...Smile

And by the way, I don't want The Police to be included in any prog category, I know they are not prog (been discussed before), but in the light of this description I think they could be added, that's all...
 
I will not cry if they don't get added, they just fit the description so damn well...

Million thanks for your consideration Tony, but I believe I know a bit about prog (wasn't I selected as a prog reviewer lately ?Wink) and I NEVER said The Police were prog, prog-RELATED is the keyword here...
 
As I said, to me, it would just feel right to add them there.  It's not championning of any kind (I'd rather champion one of my bands www.myspace.com/oddysseyweb or www.oddyssey-web.com if you have to know, far more deserving the prog etiquette than The Police), it's just common sense to me.

Well maybe I believe that instead of worrying which bands fit the prog-related description, we should be actively researching new prog to add to the site. I answer over 20 submission requests every week and most of these bands have myspace sites. These bands need a postion here far more than The Police, so why not use your knowledge about Prog to this end?

 
I am not picking on you per-se, honestly but it seems to me that too many members focus on promoting well-known bands that they like for inclusion as prog-related, rather than the job at hand. This is a Prog site after all...

I agree 100 % with you Tony (being a prog musician myself I cannot not agree, please see the edit I made in my last post for links I posted about my band), and I am not one to think you are picking on me, don't worry !Wink  I just thought I had a strong case with them and, like I did with Iron Maiden a few months back, I am stating it.

So how can ProgArchives do more for new bands who havent got a label yet? Can you do more by using the site to spread the word?
 
slightly off-topic, but much more worthwhile than discussing the Prog Rock tendencies of a supergroup...

This might just be my own thinking, but I would think that we should spend less time arguing about if Led Zep or Maiden is better and more time trying to promote some undiscovered talent.
