Are you tired of hurtful, mean threads? Well, this is the thread for you. Here are the rules:
1) No negative posts allowed
Also, the point of this thread is to find something genuinely nice to say about EACH sub-genre of prog. Something you like about it.
I don't have the time to do mine now, but I'll get to it later.
Have fun and be happy.
And remember:

Art Rock: very diverse, often masterful use of emotions, always unsure of what to expect
Canterbury: simply FUN to listen to, always puts me in a good mood
Experimental/Post-Rock: such delicate control over my emotions, they're always in charge when I listen
Indo Prog/Raga Rock: upbeat, happy, and fun, and the indian influences are great
ISP: no focus on simple virtuosity, but rather on gelling as a unit to create beautiful music
Jazz Rock/Fusion: highly skilled musicians able to push the boundaries of music and give a progressive tint jazz
Krautrock: simply PERFECT. need I say more?
Neo Prog: often very intricate and well executed concepts
Prog Folk: wonderful use of the acoustic guitar, able to rock while "unplugged"
Prog Related: it gets a bunch of non-prog fans into a whole new world of great music
Prog Electronic: subtle control of moods, beauty
Prog Metal: a wide array of influences filtered well, brings respectability to the genre of metal
Proto Prog: it started it all, and for that I am indebted
Psych/Space Rock: able to take psychedelia in so many directions, from outright strangeness to beauty
RIO/Avant: highly inventive, creative, and diverse
Symphonic Prog: it tried to raise rock to the level of classical music, and (IMO) it succeeded
Zeuhl: probably the most singularly creative genre of prog, and it gives bass (highly underrated) the center stage it deserves

I will leave some of the NICEST prog subgenres to other ENDEARABLE people, but about CANTERBURY SCENE I've got this to say:
What an incredible genre! This truly brightens up my days! When I feel down, or in the dumps, Caravan, Hatfield and Ayers are my chumps! (Sorry - CHAMPS! ) |

Kittens like RIO and avant-prog. It is positively the best music for chasing a ball of wool to.
Here is a kitten tired but happy after blasting some Sleepytime Gorilla Museum!
And I agree with the kittens, avant is fun and exciting, never boring!
EDIT: I will have to let you all know later which small animals enjoy the other genres of prog, after I have made a full consultation... Edited by Mascodagama - February 21 2007 at 10:19 |

Hartifield and the North. Enjoy.
Nice guys . I had the chance to have a lunch with them, and a coffee the day after, during the prog.fest last year. What is special; I did not know at all their music before this festival. So, I discover the Cantuberry sound. Nice and relax music.

Art Rock: Quite conventional, and yet very creative.
Canterbury Scene: Great fun to listen to. Masterful musicianship as well. Experimental/Post Rock: I've felt some incredible emotions listening to this. Raga-prog: Meditative at points, and I love the instruments. Italian Prog: Unfortunately, I haven't heard any from these artists. Krautrock: Jamming is bliss. The rawness... Yet the amazingness! Neo Progressive: This is the more classical side of Art Rock. Powerful, yet soft. Prog Folk: The acoustic guitars... Oh God, the acoustic guitars!! Prog Related: Great for those days when you just wanna relax, yet have the prog-edge. Progressive Electronic: The atmospheres and moods are amazing! Slow, brooding prog. Prog Metal: Another unexplored genre for me... But I'm thinking about getting some discs. Proto-Prog: The very foundations of Prog! I really love to hear where prog came from... Space Rock: Again, jamming = bliss. And the song lengths are also highlights. (15+ min) Avant Garde Prog: Extremely creative, a true inspiration IMO. Symphonic Prog: The most 'classical' out of all genres. Some great music here. Zeuhl: Again, haven't heard anything from this. I wanna check out Magma though. |

Flowers of Evil by Mountain is a very good album, although it isn't Prog.
Anyway: I actually like some Neo-Prog songs (by IQ). Edited by Philéas - February 21 2007 at 14:46 |
