Are you tired of hurtful, mean threads?  Well, this is the thread for you.  Here are the rules:

1) No negative posts allowed

Also, the point of this thread is to find something genuinely nice to say about EACH sub-genre of prog. Something you like about it.

I don't have the time to do mine now, but I'll get to it later.

Have fun and be happy.

And remember:

Hug not Jihad.

Art Rock: very diverse, often masterful use of emotions, always unsure of what to expect
Canterbury: simply FUN to listen to, always puts me in a good mood
Experimental/Post-Rock: such delicate control over my emotions, they're always in charge when I listen
Indo Prog/Raga Rock: upbeat, happy, and fun, and the indian influences are great
ISP: no focus on simple virtuosity, but rather on gelling as a unit to create beautiful music
Jazz Rock/Fusion: highly skilled musicians able to push the boundaries of music and give a progressive tint jazz
Krautrock: simply PERFECT.  need I say more?
Neo Prog: often very intricate and well executed concepts
Prog Folk: wonderful use of the acoustic guitar, able to rock while "unplugged"
Prog Related: it gets a bunch of non-prog fans into a whole new world of great music
Prog Electronic: subtle control of moods, beauty
Prog Metal: a wide array of influences filtered well, brings respectability to the genre of metal
Proto Prog: it started it all, and for that I am indebted
Psych/Space Rock: able to take psychedelia in so many directions, from outright strangeness to beauty
RIO/Avant: highly inventive, creative, and diverse
Symphonic Prog: it tried to raise rock to the level of classical music, and (IMO) it succeeded
Zeuhl: probably the most singularly creative genre of prog, and it gives bass (highly underrated) the center stage it deserves

I will leave some of the NICEST prog subgenres to other ENDEARABLE people, but about CANTERBURY SCENE I've got this to say:

What an incredible genre! This truly brightens up my days!
When I feel down, or in the dumps, Caravan, Hatfield and Ayers are my chumps!
(Sorry - CHAMPS! )

Kittens like RIO and avant-prog.  It is positively the best music for chasing a ball of wool to.

Here is a kitten tired but happy after blasting some Sleepytime Gorilla Museum!

And I agree with the kittens, avant is fun and exciting, never boring!

EDIT:  I will have to let you all know later which small animals enjoy the other genres of prog, after I have made a full consultation...

Nice guys . I had the chance to have a lunch with them, and a coffee the day after, during the prog.fest last year. What is special; I did not know at all their music before this festival. So, I discover the Cantuberry sound. Nice and relax music.

Art Rock: Quite conventional, and yet very creative.
Canterbury Scene: Great fun to listen to. Masterful musicianship as well.
Experimental/Post Rock: I've felt some incredible emotions listening to this.
Raga-prog: Meditative at points, and I love the instruments.
Italian Prog: Unfortunately, I haven't heard any from these artists. Cry
Krautrock: Jamming is bliss. The rawness... Yet the amazingness!
Neo Progressive: This is the more classical side of Art Rock. Powerful, yet soft.
Prog Folk: The acoustic guitars... Oh God, the acoustic guitars!! Smile
Prog Related: Great for those days when you just wanna relax, yet have the prog-edge.
Progressive Electronic: The atmospheres and moods are amazing! Slow, brooding prog.
Prog Metal: Another unexplored genre for me... But I'm thinking about getting some discs.
Proto-Prog: The very foundations of Prog! I really love to hear where prog came from...
Space Rock: Again, jamming = bliss. And the song lengths are also highlights. (15+ min)
Avant Garde Prog: Extremely creative, a true inspiration IMO.
Symphonic Prog: The most 'classical' out of all genres. Some great music here.
Zeuhl: Again, haven't heard anything from this. I wanna check out Magma though.

Art Rock: Great music, great bands.
Canterbury Scene: Fun, fun fun!!!!
Experimental/Post Rock: "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all"  Big%20smile
Raga-prog: No experience with this sub genre I'm afraid.
Italian Prog: The most stunningly beautiful music I've ever heard.
Krautrock: Klaus Shulze rules.
Neo Progressive: I have some in my collection (I gave them some of my money, isn't that nice? Smile
Prog Folk: I love acoustic music......especially when it is also prog.
Prog Related: see experimental/post rock LOL  Seriously though, if it wasn't for this sub genre, how would I have been prepared for prog?
Progressive Electronic: Great atmosphere.
Prog Metal: Bombast with a capital B........and that is a very good thing I assure you!
Proto-Prog: Where it all began............I can't thank those bands and musicians enough.
Space Rock: I think we may have a bit too many similar genres here.........but Hawkwind rules Smile
Avant Garde Prog: Puts the "progressive" in prog rock.  Truly astonishing at its best.
Symphonic Prog: My longest intimate relationship Big%20smile
Zeuhl: Loved those Cylon glasses they wore at NearFest......................

It's a Beatiful Day....

Art Rock rules over all the other wonderful genres/sub-genres.

My favourite band is the 'Enormous Creature of Honourable and Quiet Disposition', less enigmatically known as GG.

Fusion is up there too.

Prog metal, also = MALE GROPT. I don't mind a bit o' the old gropt here and there myself.

I can't remember saying that much terribly nice about gropt before, whether male or female. Isn't this just wonderful!

All prog pwns in some way. It's not the genre that matters; it's the actual music in the genre. I love a lot of jazz rock, but I'd take a good Neo album over a mediocre jazz rock album any day.

Art Rock: Musicians who aren't as concerned with comercial success as musical success

Experimental/Post-Rock: Shows that guitar is a more versitile instrument

Jazz Rock/Fusion: Usually has a great rhythm section

Neo Prog: Carries on an important tradition

Prog Metal: Lends credibility to hard rock

Psych/Space Rock: This is just a theory: These bands really care about recording quality!

prog metal can also be resolved as "leptogram" and since google cannot find any sane hits for the word, i'm coining it as "a unit of pseudo heaviness." as a nod to the word "zeptogram."

because that's so cynical I feel compelled to take part in this thread for real:

I LOVE
Art Rock: because collecting disparate bands under one ambiguous marquis is very progressive
Canterbury Scene: because I love bands that are just different configurations of other bands
Experimental/Post Rock: because its existence helped me decide to investigate what came before
Raga-prog: because there's more to life than western consonance
Italian Prog: because I love radical musicians
Krautrock: because it helps indie kids into prog
Neo Progressive: because the album covers are so delightfully kitschy
Prog Folk: because it gives female vocals the best chance to shine
Prog Related: because it's a genre tag attached to an entirely unquantifiable genre and I love irony
Progressive Electronic: because I like to be able to imagine how it feels to have my brain sizzle
Prog Metal: because it gives me a definition of pretentiousness when I need to employ one
Proto-Prog: because it gave rise to metal =P
Space Rock: because it gives me a reason not to group pink floyd with all my symphonic mp3s
Avant Garde Prog: because (a mixture of the RPI and Prog-Related reasons)
Symphonic Prog: because I like silver cloaks
Zeuhl: because it's the best music made on any planet!

Art Rock: has the most interesting range of groups.. well.. maybe the second.. and a great genre team here. Including the sweeetest team leader you could have have.
Canterbury Scene: interesting subgenre.. music is great. and the background and legitimacy of it is always in question LOL
Experimental/Post Rock: the great unknown for me in prog... no clue what this is about
Raga-prog: great for saying my mantras while wearing out the RIckenbacker
Italian Prog: Heart hahhahah..  I love it... damn near everything I've heard.
Krautrock: home of the famous Philippe and some GREAT bands
Neo Progressive:  the club med of prog... for those who desire less than complex prog.. the easy listeing of prog.
Prog Folk: home of my beloved traffic and some groups that I really want to explore
Prog Related: something nice to say huh....  ahhh.. home (for now) of ELO.
Progressive Electronic:  interesting.. not my cup of tea. but very interesting
Prog Metal: the source of a 1000 jokes in the real prog sub-genres... and I do have a soft spot in my heart for our DT fans who do endure so much scorn and ridicule from us.
Proto-Prog: prog...before prog... go figure.. anyway.. influences of prog.. a great idea.. if the inertia that grips this place would just  fade away
Space Rock: HAWKWIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avant Garde Prog: home of Assaf.. and some crazy sh*t over there.
Symphonic Prog:  real prog to most... home of the famous band.. and lair of the symphomaniacs
Zeuhl: MAGMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, here goes:  Anything 'prog' (from any country or sub-genre), released between 1971-1974 is great - there is no other word for the inspiration and creativity of prog as an art-form during that 3-4 year period.

Also, King Crimson (1969-1974), Yes (1970-1977), Genesis (1971-1974), ELP (1971-1974), Kansas (1972-1976) and Camel (Doug Ferguson years) ranks right up there with the best prog ever released in any time-frame.

Perhaps there are more non 'negative' things I could say, but this will do it for now....

My favorite band, VdGG, has a lot of punkish elements in their music. I don't want to stir any trouble. I know a lot of people agree with me on the forums.

What's wrong with punk? I mean, the good, innovative kind. What's wrong with country? It influenced rock and knowing country licks is important for any rock/jazz guitar player.

oh don't get your panties in a wad LOLWink....  I was never the loser type so I never got into punk so I really haven't heard much.  However I've lived the beer drinking, ass kicking, spending the  night in jail life style of country music.. the real stuff that is...  and that music is great stuff.  Today's country music ranks right with Prog Metal. in terms of style over  substance and rote formalization  over any real evolving or change in the music.LOLWink

Aw, generalizations , the great debate tool. I reminds me of a remark about certain atheists - they don't believe in God, and they can be very specific about the God that they don't believe inTongue
Of course, another quote - "It's easy to be brilliant if you are not bothered about being right".Big%20smile

Magma and Gong had very good instrumentalists on board.

It seems there actually is some Kraut Rock out there that is above average - namely Popol Vuh and Cluster. I'll check out more.

King Crimson's symphonic period = awesomeness. The other bands I've heard from this subgenre have their moments too.
