Art Rock Appreciation

AUDIENCE was at the time, during the 70s, and still is one of my favourite bands. They may be a little too 'quirky' for some, given Howard Worth's strong and strident vocals which I actually enjoy and given the lack of keyboards and HW's classical acoustic guitar. But its a top rhythm section with a very raw and exposed and energetic sound.[Not an underlying mellotron filling out the sound to be found in this band]. The real distinguishing feature of AUDIENCE is the woodwind skill of Keith Gemmel who , with HW's guitar sets up some haunting and powerful moods in their music. FRIEND'S FRIEND'S FRIEND and HOUSE ON THE HILL are strongly recommended.

I was reminded when checking the Art Rockers that CURVED AIR are listed here. AIR CUT is just one of THE outstanding prog releases imo, lovingly re-released and therefore widely available again for all to enjoy.[Oh, the wonder of Eddie Jobson as a fresh faced teen].Do yourself a favour folks and try these.

"Easy" is one of the best ballads I ever heard!!!

EASY is also my fave on the album over the wonderful METAMORPHOSIS which is saying something as most AIR CUT enthusiasts go the latter. Very strong album all round.

Just a quick word from the self-styled Queen of Art Rock herself... "Air Cut" is indeed an outstanding album (check my review if you want), with an incredible performance by the then 17-year-old Eddie Jobson. The 11-minute-plus "Metamorphosis" is a keyboard tour de force that would deserve much greater fame than it has. Sonja Kristina's voice, though limited in range, is haunting and distinctive.

A personal recommendation of mine would be the first two High Tide albums, "Sea Shanties" and "High Tide", recently re-released with bonus tracks. The former contains one of my favourite instrumentals of all time, the absolutely stunning "Death Warmed Up", featuring some incredible violin work by Simon House. Check it out ASAP!

I will definetly check out those albums. (Added it to my growing "When I have Money" list).

Hats off to King Crimson, the really UNIQUE art/prog band.

The stuff I've heard from Taal is great (despite the notoriously rare 'Skymind'). Some of my faves in AR are Happy the Man and Interpose (two bands you might like Ben), Philharmonie, Tony Banks (most of his albums have some good things, from instrumental prog to ambient), Robert Fripp ('I Advance Masked' excellent and the RFSQ is very good), and Argent (their early organ prog like 'Ring of Hands').
