Since I didn't like the live, I didn't go ahead and get the other stuff but I hear 'Frances the Mute' is good, and Prog-jester seems to like the first, which is either the Tremulant EP or 'Deloused in the Comatorium'.

Well, the greatest art rockers are, of course, Moody Blues and Procol Harum...unless they're considered proto-prog for existing before King Crimson, but ignore that!

If you are short on money and looking to buy a new album - I would go for the Gentle Giant stuff before Mars Volta.  Octopus or Free Hands is a good place to start.

I am still struggling with the Mars Volta so spend your money wisely - IMO GG is much better.

Wait, Mars Volta and Gentle Giant are in the same catagory? Is that possible?

How could we forget the Moody Blues? My brother got To Our Children's Children's Children today so I finally got some to listen to.  As for buying more albums I have no money I am willing to spend so I have to wait a while before I get more albums.

Children's Children is pretty good; I like to think of the first four songs as one long suite. I like Days Of just thaaaaaaaaaaat much more, but all in all, the Moodies are one of the easiest and more enjoyable bands to listen to.

Procol is like the Moodies in that, if you like one album, you will probably like most of 'em.

Art rock, hmmm... All I have that's called art rock on this site is Rush and King Crimson.  Rush is great, definitely in my top three favorite bands, and King Crimson...well, not so much.  They always have a couple of really killer songs on each album, and then a bunch of stuff I could care less about.  Their ballads are especially boring to me.  And many of their songs seem a little aimless and long, but they have several really good pieces.

My grandpa got the music off some vinyls he had but they are really bad quality so I have to buy all teh albums. But I love the Moody Blues. Such a good band.

Anyone who likes Rush is cool with me. They are my favorite band.

Hmm, Free Hand is the one that hooked me, but that was my first GG album anyway.  Acquiring the Taste is a particular favourite of mine.  Three Friends or Octopus might be a good place to start.  But listen to the streams here CLICK.  Which song of those appeals to you the most?

There are many "art rock" (as classified at this site -- I find the term rather artificial) bands I like -- one classic band that stands out for me is Jacula.

As for a modern band, I suggest Taal's Mister Green if you can acquire it.

GG's Aquiring the Taste was the first one I heard. Though not a favorite of mine, I really appreciate Giant's taste and musicality. Excellent band.

Love this catagory as there are many great bands there, King Crimson, VDGG, The Tangent, The Mars Volta and some other good bands like Gentle Giant and Rush.
Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

You're a natural then.  It takes effort for some to acquire the taste.  Yeah, starting with the first and continuing from there is the best way to go -- so your GG progression coincides with theirs.  All up to and including Interview are essential albums in my collection.
