Topic: Art Rock Appreciation Posted: December 30 2006 at 15:59 |
I love this category of progressive rock. I utterly adore Rush and am getting into the other bands like King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator. So discuss how great this is. DO IT.

To start this discussion I will concentrate mostly on how great of a band Rush is. I mean their albums are amazing! (mostly) I thoroughly enjoy Hemispheres, 2112, and A Farewell To Kings. But I do not enjoy Permenant Waves or Moving Pictures that much.

Well... Rush is good, but I think King Crimson is in another league altogether.

I haven't heard any modern Art Rock unfortunately, but if I started I would go for Mars Volta. Which album would be best?

like I specified in my bio: "art rock, its general features are indeed a keen chord to me; special gods are Van der Graaf and Hammill; King Crimson, Rush, Gentle, Fripp otherwise"
Oldfield goes mentioned as well, peculiarly.
I listened to dredg as well, but I guess there have already been discussion of it being something else than that.
I think Art Rock is a totally prominent style.

I really enjoy Rush only because they were the first prog band I listened to. I am getting into King Crimson a lot and have 3 of their albums: In The Court Of The Crimson King (I got it yesterday), Red, and Larks' Tongues in Aspic. I love these 3 albums and are becoming my favorite art rock albums fast.

Rush is of course awesome, as are Gentle Giant, The Mars Volta and VDGG. A lesser known band yet great band is Devil Doll, who have an awesome gothic atmosphere to their music.

I unfortunately have no Gentle Giant. Which album would be a good album to start with?

I suspect someday you'll appreciate Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, but they are leaner albums than earlier stuff and may take a while to like. Waves is my personal favorite of theirs.

Oh yeah, Hem was my favorite for years...such a marvelous record. It was the first album I ever bought when I was like eight or something (didn't really understand it but I liked the ideas and artwork).

I really like Circumstances on that album. It is a really cool song. What is your favorite King Crimson album?

Hmm...difficult but right now I'd have to say Power to Believe, but Larks Tongues and the 'Night Watch' live set are a close second. Love Discipline as well.

I need those. I only have The Court Of The Crimson King, Larks' Tongue in Aspic, and Red. But I enjoy these albums so much.

I think Gentle Giant is the best in this category, followed by king crimson, VDGG and others, though I used to like Rush when i was a teen, I canīt stand with Geddys voice.

I have no money. But hopefully for my birthday I'll get some more money. But that is in 6 months.
