You're thinking about a post-doc even before you start your PhD? |
Hi Bob Why not? When I was in the middle of my B.Sc. studies I already knew to which masters programs I will apply and which mentors I wanted to instruct me. I also knew I want to do a PhD (which was delayed a bit due to some reasons). In the masters studies I knew which universities and programs I will apply to for PhD. It's not that strange to start thinking ahead of the next step. It's not like I am commiting myself to one thing and that is it. I am thinking about where I want to go and what do I want to achieve and I set the current ground in order to get that. In biological sciences (at least where I am from) it is quite common to think ahead this way.

They're raising the minimum wage to $7.15 an hour in a few months. You are 4 years older and it's difficult to find a job when you're 16...

I'm a college student. When I grow up to be a big man I want to be a spatial planner, since that's what I'm studying to.

I have in all seriousness no idea what a spatial planner does - maybe you could enlighten me?
And, much less seriously, William Spooner - the guy who for some bizarre reason frequently exchanged the openings of his words:
would have transformed the phrase to "a palatial spanner"....

true, I'd take whatever I could get just a couple years back. The minimum needs to be raised all over the country IMO, no one can pay rent and other expenses on $5.15 an hour.

OK, now a serious reaction by me: I work as a psychiatric nurse since 1986, at this moment I guide mostly schizophrenic people but also people with personality disorders (mainly borderline) and addictions (no hard drugs but often soft drugs and alcohol). We try to stabilise and then search for a new balance. My work varies from therapeutical/supporting conversations to play football or organise a DVD music evening, for example Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd, Genesis, Marillion of Taling Heads. It's almost moving to see how relaxing music (especially the more melodic rock and prog) is for mentally ill people, that's why they often react positive to my DVD progrock evenings ! It's a tough job but every day is different, you can put a lot of yourself into this work and you learn a lot about yourself (know I can handle much better my dark turns .. ).
