Sums it up for me. And you have admit, Freddie Mercury was one of, if not the greatest showman.

No guitar in an "only guitar" band? Funny! Perhaps it's not written on the CD booklets anymore, but in the middle of the synthesizermania of the mid seventies (remember Pop Corn?), Queen used to print somewhere on there LP folders "No Synthesizers!" Just to precise that all sounds were generated by the combination of vocals and guitars!

Maybe the confusion comes from the fact that guitarists like Brian May are human. Hence they play with some feeling, while most "modern" (did I say metal?) guitarists could easily be replaced by programs.

There's also many (prog) rock bands listed in the archives, which don't have any guitars in 'em, just drums, bass + keyboards. I don't think there has to be a guitar in a rock band. F.ex. AARDVARK was a quite good and funny band, and they did rock too!  I think QUATERMASS was more succesful band of this kind.

Maidenrulez, you hate Queen and in spite of all the things you said, you still don't bring a convincing argument about this hate. I guess it's a matter of personal taste in the end, and that's ok by me. BUT: I would just kindly ask of you not to be offensive with one of the greatest band who ever tread this earth. I find many questionable things in Iron Maiden, but I don't even dream of saying the same things about them as you said about Queen. It's a matter of respect and objectivity I guess. Thanks a lot.

I pretty much can't stand Queen either.  I do feel most of their output is pop, if not very popish rock.  Just my humble opinion.  I'm not really into the pop scene.

I agree with you on Queen in the late seventies and the eighties. Does your  bad feeling also apply to their early albums, especially Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and A Night At The Opera?

In their early years, Queen were one of the greatest rock bands there ever was, and indeed their best work was very proggy imo. Certainly, the triumvirate of 'Queen II', 'Sheer Heart Attack' and 'A Night At The Opera', plus the hard rock masterwork of 'News Of The World' are amongst the best rock has to offer.

However, for me they declined somewhat after about 'Jazz', by bringing in the synths which meant they lost some of their charm and appeal, plus their sense of experiment had diminished hugely.

It wasn't until around 'The Miracle' (and even that is only a half great album) that they managed to re-gain a sense of experiment with the marvellous title track, 'Party/ Khashoggi's Ship' and 'I Want It All', that are by far their best moments of the 80s. 'Innuendo' was their best in years though, and despite a few duff tracks here and there, showed the band firing on all cylinders.

For most people, I'm guessing their understanding of Queen is based on the hit singles of the 80s, such as 'I Want To Break Free' and 'Radio Ga Ga', which are as cheesy as they come. However, songs like 'Doin' Alright', 'Great King Rat', 'Seven Seas Of Rhye', 'March Of The Black Queen', 'Father To Son', '39' and 'The Prophet's Song' are 100% prog.

It's also worth noting that album reviews I've seen from the 70s have actually compared the early Queen to bands like Genesis, suggesting that they were perceived as progressive in their early career.

It's pretty clear our thread starter can't be persuaded to like the band, even if Queen's earliest albums influenced the band that supposedly "rulez" from his name. But I would like to comment on a few things.

Most of the songs listed (at least, when spelled correctly) do rely on other instruments outside of the guitar, sure. So what? There are plenty of prog/rock songs that don't particularly rely on the guitar as the main instrument. Prog's most famous song, Carry on wayward son, is a pretty even mix of guitars and keyboard/piano. Many of Genesis's compositions in the Gabriel era had the guitar pulling equal weight with the other instruments, if not less. There's not a ton of guitar in VDGG's peak periods.

I like every single one of those songs (The invisible man is trying sometimes, but that's it). One of the best things about Queen was how they could make music in plenty of different ways. This is a good thing, in my eyes. Even if you don't like that fact, they have plenty of songs that have the guitar at the forefront too.

Everyone should have a couple of Queen songs that they like because of the wide range of styles they went through, not to mention different band members singing.

If there isn't, you're probably just hating them just for the sake of hating them (for whatever reasons).

Yeah, that's it, back out of it. You really started a thread to hate on a band that's fairly popular around here and didn't expect any backlash?

Did not get any comments on my Maiden hate thread...a bit disapointing  I really wondered if there was anyone here that disliked Queen as much as i do...guess not then

Anyways i had to force myself through a entire 2 hour set of queen and have been hating them ever since....2 hours of horrible music can make anyone mad

Nearly NO GUITARS?????

Are we still talking about Queen?

You know, the band with Brian May in?

The guitar is only heard in very few songs...i was severly disapointed by queen as i actually was expecting guitar riffs...but that only happens every 2 or 3 songs

A statement like this needs to be backed up with specific examples.  Which Queen songs can you not hear the guitar in?

John Deacon didn't want any guitar in Back chat, but Brian was persistent, so the only song that wasn't intended to have guitar in it has guitar in it (and a very good one too).

All Queen songs have guitar on them, ridiculous to state other wise

On all these songs the guitar can be barely heard and is more of an backing instrument than a dominant song-driving instrument...ofcourse there are guitars in the songs but most of the songs it is easy to oversee as it is not very important for the songs

I can hear the guitars...BUT they are not very dominant in the songs like ordinary rock groups like Led Zeppelin, Rolling stones and Deep Purple...And that what i define as classic rock basically, a very dominant Guitar element where the Guitar is what drives the songs

But only about half the songs you listed are from their "classic rock" period.  And you've conveniently left out songs like Keep Yourself Alive, Brighton Rock, Bohemian Rhapsody (OK, that one's more towards the end rather than the whole song), It's Late, Tie Your Mother Down, Stone Cold Crazy, Hammer To Fall and I Want It All, to name just a few.
