Ok,so I maybe overreacted myslf here,by saying he stinks,I apologize
for that,although I don't think that if I would have said "Maybe not"
he would have acted normal,knowing his reactions for sometimes...
As I've said,he always wasn't on terms with those who were not agreeing
on his opinions...I know so many times (with The Final Cut,with King
Crimson,with his best albums of each year).I agree,compared with
Flowerchild or fripp=...,he was "gentle",but still,with a person like
that you cannot acomplish what the purpose of this forum is:to
communicate and share information.
I'm not saying now that every person who says something out of place
should be ejected...God knows that I myself would be on the top list
for messing things over at Mariah Carey...But still,a limit of decency
and respect is needed.
Now,let us move on...Farewell,Luke...

Women in general don't spend too much time listening to music or looking for the best HiFi system they can get or even 'wasting' time writing to forums like this.

I think you are at the right trail with this observation. The emotional content in most music is something many feminine persons maybe do not seek from music. One lady who used to booze at my apparment sometimes commented our progressive musical selections, that she liked the beginning of "Starless", but nothing else we played. "Fracure" didn't appeal her? How can that be!

I dont know really it is perhaps the same reason why women does not find Half life, doom or other computer games appealing.
Now finding a woman that likes both computer games and prog that is surely a rareity.

Friede and I don't know play Half-life or Doom, but we play Lord of Destruction (the expansion of Diablo 2) and Baldur's Gate 2

Woman are a complete mystery. Why so many women reject prog is
beyond me, but then it's also a mystery why they take shoes so

what's the OC? a tv-show? if so, we probably don't know it since we
live in Germany. anyway, we hardly ever watch tv, except for the news.
as to shoes: we can't understand why men don't care about their shoes
at all. we can spend hours looking for the most comfortable shoes, only
to wind up with the most uncomfortable but extremely good looking ones . we have a few pairs that... but no, let's not get into that.
as to phone: yes, we phone a lot, and long, but it is usually with
people in the USA, whom we are not likely to see within the next year.

Hello.
Phhh, ...initially the question was about women and progrock so I would like to advise every proghead to read the book from Edward Macan entitled Rocking The Classics. Iit features a very interesting chapter about the reason why progrock is mainly a man's world! It has to do with the fact that women are more attracted by melodic music. I support this theory because I've seen the most women during concerts from early Marillion and from Camel and certainly not during the more complex progrock bands like ELP, Gentle Giant and King Crimson.

I agree about suggesting to every progheads to read Rocking The Classics! It's really an essential text and my favourite book to quote on forums.
Whether women are smarter than men or not, whether they are more intellectual or emotional are questions, to which answers he haven't yet found (I doubt If we ever find one). It is fragment of more complex issue, even philosophical one. For instance, nowadays in USA we witness the hot argument, whether women are naturally non-mathematicians and whether they even want to exercise sports. I think this is the question of difference between genders. We know that difference exists (small, but beatiful, which makes sexual coupling so enjoyable), but we can't define it, pointing the single quality, that's definitely female or male. You can always find example evidence to the contrary. Experience shows us, that women don't like maths, but I bet that every male on this forum knows a girl, who actually is pretty smart in that area, even better than him at solving equations.
About Steve Hogarth's issue: We shall remember, that bulk of Fish - period material was about Derek's problem with relationship and it was quite mysogynic (Script For A Jester's Tear, The Web, the whole Fugazi, large parts of Misplaced Childhood). So you would not expect many girls listening to that stuff. Since Fish departure Marillion have not extended their audience, so there are mainly male fans left. But of course I might be wrong.
On the other hand, it was Fish who wrote their only real hits "Kayleigh" and "Lavender" - the latter actually best love song with simple tune and lyrics ever written IMHO. And I also think that although many consider H to be better singer than Fish, having softer, more "emotional" voice, it is clear that H wasn't able to write such beatiful emotional hits as songs mentioned above. Perhaps this is the solution. H is not as sincere when singing love songs as Fish, the nervous rocker, and perhaps women feel it and not attend softer, more danceable version of Marillion's gigs.

My woman friend is wonderful. She loves Progressive Rock. She just got into that last year herself because she didn't know it existed. I started out with a Kansas CD I made up that included songs fronm their first and Second albums. She now loves Genesis, ELP, Cryptic Vison, Nima and Merge, Proto-Kaw, Salems Hill, IZZ, Spiraling and the list is growing. She also plays this music for her kids aged 5-7 and they love it. So while she is not the norm she does like the music. We have been to Cal Prog and Nearfest. Take it for what it is. Women like this are out there you just need to find them.

well I think its become a bit of a vicious cycle ... the more that guys are into prog & dominate the scene the less likely it is that girls will get involved and so prog becomes associated with male *territory* ...
There's hope if they have a male proggy partner/friend though ...

That's strange, it was women who got me into Opeth, it was women who got me into Yes, and it was women who got me into Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.
Where I live, there's more women who love prog than men (I'm probably the only guy in our school who gets into it, and the only guy who knows about King Crimson).

One of the reasons my first girlfriend and I lasted so long (she lived with me for two years, 1976-1978) was our mutual love of prog: Yes, ELP, Genesis, Floyd, Tull, Crimson, Moodies, Gentle Giant - she loved it all (Genesis and GG were her favorites). We attended every concert together. It was with her that I went to all seven Frippertronics concerts in NYC, and spent an evening having beers with Fripp and Eno (we both loved all of Eno's stuff, from Here Come the Warm Jets through the Ambient series).
When I met my to-be-wife in 1980, I was shocked to find that she, too, loved most prog, and we also attended many concerts together until we split in 1986. We saw Floyd three times, Yes twice, Genesis twice, Tull once, and others.
I guess I really lucked out, huh?

you are right about one thing: I couldn't care less about the best HiFi
system, because I already know I have it. the best HiFi system is my
brain; I can listen to music on an ancient mono tape recorder, in my
head it turns into a $10000 HiFi system with sub-woofer.
as for prog stars being cute: most of them aren't for me because they are men, and I happen to be a woman who is into women only
as for prog being cold: some is. ABWH for example were absolutely cold,
that's why they don't do anything for me (although I like Yes)
