Subject: Men only?

Steve Hogarth of Marillion has been asking fans to take their girlfriends to concerts as he was tired of seeing just men. Why is it that prog appeals more to men than women?

because men are smarter?

No idea about that...

Why does pornography appeal more to men than women also?

Luckily there are exeptions to make a rule.

Because most women got terrible music taste and actual test show that Men are also more intelligent than women on average...

(KIDDING)

I dont know really it is perhaps the same reason why women does not find Half life, doom or other computer games appealing.

Now finding a woman that likes both computer games and prog that is surely a rareity.

(although i have managed getting a girl to like Porcupine tree, Yes and Jethro tull)

If Steve Hogarth wants chicks at his gigs he knows what he has to do. Have a hit single with a love song. It's what Genesis did with 'Follow You Follow Me' and after that they had to beat them off with a sh!tty stick, especially Banks!!

Woman are a complete mystery. Why so many women reject prog is beyond me, but then it's also a mystery why they take shoes so seriously, why they watch The OC and talk on the phone for ages to people they are going to see in 20 minutes anyway.

As you know, Bob, I know some women who like some prog, my ex-was a massive Rush fan, and the friend I've been telling you about, of course, but she is a bit odd. They are few and far between.

That's where you're wrong. You see, you've somehow confused humour with winding people up, sprouting unsubstatiated and often misguided opinions at random, throwing yourself into petty and pointless arguments and hurling random abuse at well-meaning individuals. You add nothing to discussions and tend to leave what was a once intelligent thread in tatters and the people involved angry and bitter. It's people like you who make posting on Prog Archives a miserable experience and the sooner you are ejected the better.

In short, you are a c**t.

I'll leave it to Mike to correct the spelling mistake in that one!

I won't bother to change it, because it will undoubtedly spark another error-prone response.

I'm not so sure that Hogarth is entirely correct.  I went to see The Church recently and the audience was about 25% women, maybe more.  Same at the last Yes concert I attended.  Same with Floyd.

However, if Hogarth is correct in any way, and men take to prog more than women, it may not be a matter of "smarter," but rather that women tend to be more in touch with "emotion" while men tend to be more "intellectual" - overall.  Thus, music like prog - which has its "emotional" side but is still largely "intellectual" is nature - will necessarily appeal more to men, while women will be more drawn to music that has a more prevalent "emotional" value.

Peace.

I read this thread and while I thought Luke is/was a bit of a w**ker I fail to see why he was thrown out. He may have walked the line a bit, but he didn't cross it IMO. Just more abusive power being demonstrated by the admins here.

I have read some of the other threads and he's a bit of an antagonist, but he didn't show pics of penis's, threaten to kill people , or fill his posts with tons of vulgarity.

I guess it's easy to say women like love songs and men like songs about wizards and spaceships. I guess it all depends on how you are 'wired up' as an individual.

I find good prog rock extremely emotional, the intellectual side of it is secondary. But then what I find emotional is not what the 'masses' find emotional. There are few 'love songs' I like, and the ones I do will be a bit 'odd'

As far as this topic goes its not whether woman are smarter or not or we're all just big nerds. I blame it on women's affinity towards pop culture. They are exposed to it at an early age and even encouraged to indulge in it and therefore just do not relate to something so counter- culture like progressive rock.

gdub:

In fact, Luke did in fact use an enormous amount of vulgarity, as well as engaging in continual personal attack, both of which are violations of the site guidelines.  Indeed, his actions drew the attention of both the admin and collabs, and I ejected him based on both his own unrepentant obnoxiousness and the recommendation of almost the entire admin and collab groups.

Peace.

somehow I think it comes down to behaviour patterns rather than intellect...for instance, blokes are generally better at reading maps/ storing useless info/ insistant on putting their Cds into order/ taking an interest in traction & railway engines etc, etc...prog can be highly technical first, then emotional second...

You're right that women seem to be more in touch with emotions. As to men being more intellectual, the postings on this thread indicate the opposite.

I was thinking that a few women prog fans would give an answer in this thread but it seems that there aren't any here!

Here I am.... even though the path the discussion took right from the beginning sort of put me off for a while. BTW, I really think it all comes down to individuals rather than gender. Maybe I'm more the intellectual type, but I've always hated with a passion the kind of music women are usually supposed to like - while my brother, for instance, quite likes conventional pop music and would die at a Yes gig!

Then again, I don't really think prog is not emotional. It is just a different way of conveying emotion. I don't dislike love songs as a rule, but they have to be somehow 'different' from run-of-the-mill chart stuff. To make an example, I love Greg Lake's ballads but I hate Phil Collins' poppier songs on SEbtP and W&W - maybe because Collins' voice reminds me of his later, hideous chart hits, while Lake's has a proggier quality.

gdub:

For the record, the policy of the site is "two strikes, you're out"; i.e., you get one warning, and if your behavior, "approach" or attitude don't change, you get ejected.  This policy has been very effective in preventing the site from "gathering trolls," and maintaining at least some semblance of reasonable discourse.

As an aside, of the half dozen or so members who were ejected and then "given a second chance," five had to be re-ejected within 48 hours; only one actually "changed his tune."  (And no, I'm not telling you who...).

Yes, it is true that many others - including yourself - often "toe the line," sometimes precariously.  However, the admin team measures all behavior of the member, not just one or two comments.  Thus, while you - and, yes, others - may "cross the line" on occasion, that is weighed against your general approach and demeanor, which, as far as I have seen, may be occasionally "combative," but still well within the site guidelines.  With Luke, he was consistently sarcastic and demeaning, and contributed little or nothing of value to this discussion - or, indeed, elsewhere.

Ricochet:

I should note that, as someone else pointed out, your comment was "out of line," and definitely didn't help the situation: "feeding the troll" is an apt metaphor.  Please try to refrain from such unnecessary baiting in the future.  Thanks.

Peace.

First of all, this is a interesting thread TOTALLY RUINED, not just by Luke but of all you who couldn't just ignore him.

It is stated that men and women see things in different points of view, but no one is smarter because of sex.

Women seems generally less interested in nerd-things. Prog listeners are all music-nerds?

To get a real discussion of this we need women attending the thread, which means the question has to be questioned at another forum.

I can only think of Kate Bush and perhaps Tori Amos who fall slightly into the prog camp. As a rule, prog music requires a number of talented musicians working together and women in music tend to work solo. Not to say that there aren't any talented women musicians around.

I find myself on the opposite side of the fence from you on this one Riccy.  I've said far worse about women in many of my posts, and can only assume he meant it as a joke.  You also said that women are smarter than men.  Does that mean people should attack you for that statement?  As to who started it, I think both of you had a hand in the escalation.  I will agree that him telling you to "f off" was inappropriate.  But if everyone here who has ever made a provocative post is summarily ejected, I'm sure there would only be like five people left in this forum.  I have not read any of his other posts in other threads, but nothing in this thread seemed to warrant his removal.  And it leaves me wondering, who is next on the chopping block: me, Tony R, gdub?

Can't we all just agree to not get along?

Oh, and I have a question for Maani.  Assuming his other posts really did warrant expulsion, was he given any warning that his conduct was violating the rules of the forum and that if he did not change his behavior he would be ejected?  Or was he just ejected without warning?  Oops.  I posted before I read all of the posts.  You do give warnings.  Fair enough.
