I've already indicated I personally support your proposal that ratings only reviews should not be accepted.

The decision on whether or not to included them (or how to treat them if they are accepted) lies with the site owners, Rony & M@X.

Very common word, but not that bad to say in speech. There are far worse words..

Let's take for example me writing a review on "Foxtrot",saying:

   "I like it...it is good"

6 words and a five-star rating,would you post that on the front page?I agree with EL,reviews have to have a decent substance within to be published on the main page...
 

I'm not talking about the front page - I'm talking about the album page, where you go to find out all about the album. Currently you only see a part of the ratings ... it would be an enormous help for me to see who made these reviewless ratings. I suspect that it's only a small number of people who make these ratings.



I think that the procedure is correct,that category does not ask you for your opinion,or a short commentary,but for a review,which by definition,has to contain a larger amount of information and presentation than a normal opinion...

I don't see the problem with foreign language reviews, so long as they could be filtered out for we ignorant people who only speak one language.

Goose,

the problem with reviews not in English is moderating them. How do we know if they comply with the guidelines? I readily admit the word "ignorant" is entirely valid, but we are where we are.

I still don't see why my approach wouldn't work:

  • Force people to write at least 50 words in ENGLISH.
  • Provide a checkbox that is checked by default and reads "publish this review". Someone who knows that his language skills are poor can uncheck the box and thus create a rating without review - but the reasoning can still be verified by admins.
  • List the ratings without reviews on the albums pages. This will be extremely helpful to find out if you trust the rating, or if it is from a reviewer with whom you don't agree.

This would be VERY easy to implement, and it's quite compatible with how the system works now. I admit that I'm very curious to see who made all those 1 star rating for the prog metal masterpieces ...

Yeah, but what if someone from (for example) China decided to write a review in his native language? No one would probably understand it. How could we be sure that he wrote anything about the music?

I can't really answer to that, but I doubt this would really happen...
