I am so glad I saw ELP on their Black Moon tour(I was in 3rd row!).
At the time(1993)the only ELP I had heard was the Black Moon album and the Best of.When they started playing Tarkus,I actually thought that it was a new song!Embarrassed
I was also wondering why the hell Greg was wearing sunglasses at the beginning of the show.
When they did Pictures....I thought, wow, this must be what music in Heaven sounds like.
I imagine all the prog haters think ELP is what music in HELL sounds likeLOL!
Saw'em again in 96 when they opened for Tull.Carl was a bit perturbed when he noticed that it was starting to rain.

Nah, a tour of colleges in  the midwest of the USA would be the best. :)

...........Say what?

Did they do this at the Cal Jam as well???

yeah they had these wings come out form behind the modular moog - it looks like those big wings the beastie had in the film 'Jeepers Creepers!'

Yep, the modular Moog would rotate 45 degrees to face the audience, and then it sprouted huge metallic wings.  All the while it was playing the little sequence that ends the Brain Salad Surgery album, which got louder and louder, faster and faster, until it ended.

And didnt they go directly into The Great Gates of Kiev from there? Or am I imagining it?

Sorry, those brain cells are long gone and I have no idea what came after.Wink

Guess I'll have to go digging around youtube and my dvd collection.

The Montreux dvd is ok. Its a tie for me with the Royal Albert Hall one. I mean they are both good, but not as good as the stuff from the 70's.

I have that 'from the beginning DVD' - it's absolute gold. there is even footage of them writing and rehearsing for the BSS album.

I was to young to go to their concerts in the 70's, being only a 8 or 9 - just a bairn! Still, I'm catching up. Hopefully going to get the Montreux one and the Royal Albert hall one as well. Good reviews on Amazon!

Emo has played a big part of the sound I'm trying to capture with my band these days. it's a sort of Rick Emerson thing - or perhaps a Keith Wakeman? who knows? who cares!!!!! I'm having fun and spelling correctly for a change! (it won't last!)

Poor soul  - all those years on a motorbike without a helmet - and it turns out he needed one to play the piano!

All I know is it was from the California Jam, as I have part of it on DVD from an ELP dvd set. I think he also comes down off the piano and goes into The Great Gates of Kiev, but I'm sure they werent playing Pictures.

When I saw the spinning piano, I think he was playing Take A Pebble, but it's been 35 years or so.  My memory of the concert is probably impaired, though it was definitely the Brain Salad Surgery tour as I also remember the wall-o'-synth sprouting wings at the end.
